Tuohy at Carlton vs Geelong

He’s a fantastic player.

Another dud trade from SOS because of his obsession with injured and underperforming top draft picks from GWS.
Are we in a Silvagni thread again?

Im assuming you’re talking about Kenneally? Debatable who’s been the better player
Kennelly compares but just if you look at the stats Tuohy is ahead or at least equal in basically everything.

Tadgh's got his flag of course and you can't downplay that. But given Tuohy is well past him in games played with at least a season and a bit left in the tank (probably two), I don't know how you can definitively put Kennelly ahead.

No, it’s the Tuohy thread.

It does seem astounding that he was discarded for so little when he was performing so well, but we know the reasons why.

Geelong and Tuohy did really well out of his move.

SOS had the biggest hard on for Marchbank.

Took him at 6 when most draft pundits had him in the late teens, then doubled down when he got the list manager's job at Carlton and ended giving up one of our best senior players for a minor pick downgrade to facilitate bringing him in.

In hindsight I'm not sure why he didn't just manufacture some pick swaps to get us a late second round pick. IIRC Marchbank was uncontracted and had played very little footy, and wouldn't have been worth as much to GWS as SOS assumed. I get the impression the trade was wrapped up (theoretically) very early on in the piece.

Can see why Tuohy was aggrieved, but good to see him playing well at Geelong. The model of consistency, versatile, skilful.

Agree.

I spose SOS saw Touhy as collateral to get the pieces he needed for players and he didn’t have too much more to deal with at the time. Solid strategy, but the players targeted in this trade were the wrong ones.

Tuohy brings such a hard edge to the Geelong backline. Every team could use one of his type.

Still got a couple of years left in him as well I reckon.

I guess saving grace for Carlton is that Geelong drafted Fogarty with the pick who now plays for the Blues anyway and GWS gave up their second rounder in the deal as well. That being said 2018 second rounders ended up being valuable picks.

Kelly, Balta, L.Ryan, S.Taylor

I think playing with better players has helped elevate his game. I don’t necessarily think he is a better player at Geelong, but in a top 4 side as opposed to a bottom 4 side I think is going to make a fairly significant level of difference re structure, players you’re playing alongside, and how your role could change.
This is the conversation in a nutshell.

Yep. We stooged ourselves with this trade. At the time, he was one of our best players. Durable, superb kick, and great competitor. He still is of course.

The rumour was that Sydney wanted him and Zach was interested. They had a bunch of draft picks to trade so the club low-balled Touhy's new deal to push him out.

Touhy then turned around and nominated The Cats, who had almost nothing in the draft pick cupboard. Hence we ended up with steak-knives Smedts. Lang was almost part 2 of that trade. Proof that even Wells makes mistakes, but he learns quickly.

The Blues knew they'd screwed up immediately, and quietly buried their mistake. If he'd gone to Sydney it might have been a different story.

This. We out smarted ourselves and Geelong got a bargain out of it.

One of a few players like Sam Jacobs who the footy public had no idea how good they were until they went to another team.

Sos looks like he stuffed this one so far, but won others like Menzel, Yarran and Bell
