Even if St Kilda had bid, which they wouldn't have, you had 6 weeks to plan for live trades so that you got something for pick 9. North just gave their f1 for 27. You would have had 15 clubs queueing up making you offers for pick 9.

We did.

Essendon traded out: 9, 44 (F3), 53 (Stringer).

And got: 5 (F1), 32, 35, 37, 47, 54, 65

So out 2064 points, in 4093 points.

I think we did fine.

We entered the draft with 1 x 1st, 1 x 2nd and no third.

We'll leave taking 1 x 1st, 2 x 2nds, 1 x 3rd (assuming nothing changes) and with an extra F1 in-hand for next year.

Ending up with a F1 and picks 37/39/43 in a deep draft is far from a bad outcome though.

I thought we should of just kept it and not matched a bid on Kako if it came, but we traded pick 9 for probably around pick 9 next year and basically all of Melbourne's other picks this year. Much better than trading 1 for 27 and 29.

The Carlton trade was for Liam Stocker. The crows gave us pick 19 in 2018 which we used on Stocker. In return we swapped future 1st rounders in 2019. Crows got pick 4 and we got pick 9. Crows ended up moving around and drafted McAsey (who was a spectacular bust) at 6 and we traded down with the pick 9 that we had and ended up with Kemp (still going) and Philp (gone) .

So it was hardly a spectacular failure, although who knows what would have happened if teams took their original picks. Stocker, Kemp and Philp for McAsey. Crows did trade down for pick 6 and pick 4 was used on Ash. Picks before 9 included Serong and Young though.

We almost certainly wouldn’t have been able to convert the live trade in to the value we did.

As it stands we’ll take 4 picks inside 43 this draft without compromising our draft next year.

The North trade looks bad on the surface, but not so much when you take a few things into consideration.

1. They've had plenty of first round picks the past few years, including FOS last night.
2. We have no idea how good Whitlock could turn out to be. If he's projects like Josh Weddle then all will be forgiven.
3. Even if they finish 17th next season (and Richmond 18th), then they have (without bids etc) picks 19 and 20.
If they let LDU walk for the compo they're straight back into pick 3 alongside those selections. If they don't then they hold the all important 'first pick of the second night' and will likely receive plenty of offers for it to improve their hand elsewhere.
4. If they manage to improve enough next season to climb up the ladder then nobody will care either.


If Whitlock is a bust AND North are dead bottom again next season then the trade will likely be viewed as a monumental failure.

Too many ifs is why this is a bad trade IMO. If it all aligns then yes, it’s not a bad trade. But the likelihood of it all aligning is slimmer than the trade backfiring.

I just don’t think a rebuilding club like North should be taking risks like this. I guess they just have to back their team to rise

If 2 was a flop it would be fine
But Brayshaw is an AA ,MVP, bnf winner that sets a standard around the club which suns were crying out for.
