This is about both our clubs future rebuilds. The road map is after our flags (hence the whole thing being called a rebuild in the first place). We were identical the first year off our flag being 12th the next season. Let’s see where we go from here. We set the benchmark at 7th in the second season. GO!
Benchmark #2.

Hawkins has been amazing, but I do think he is beginning to show his age.

Started the season okay but 4 games in a row now he has been goalless.
rare for someone of his quality.

Well, we had a bunch of pretty good 19-28 year old contributors last night (outside of J.Henry) and our over 30's were essentially useless. So we're very much seeing the quality and importance shift to the younger generation. A player like Bruhn getting injured is a bigger loss than someone like Duncan now. Holmes, Zuthrie, Miers, Stengle, Dempsey, O.Henry, SDK and even young Clark provided the few highlights and passages of play that gave us a sniff. Atkins outside of his late boo-boo gave it a good crack. But any side will struggle to beat a top side when their veterans all play poorly.

Agree it's so promising that it's mostly the young guys leading the way, and some of the older brigade having quieter ones.

I fully expected 2024 to be a transitional-type year where the baton seriously gets handed over to the new generation and the veterans are gradually phased out, so from that point of view the year is going extremely well.

Tigers are starting to finally face reality.

Still playing an older side than most and 2nd bottom. So plenty of pain to come.

On the upside the VFL side is going well.

But probably time to say goodbye to Grimes and McIntosh.

Toughest place you can be in footy.

Terrible, and playing kids that you know deep down won't make it, or have a role player ceiling at best.

Gibcus going out really hurts, even if he's not going to be changing results at this stage.

Do feel for the kid, it's essentially two years of development robbed from him when he should be getting valuable experience, and blossoming into a player that Richmond can build their future backline around.

It's not all doom and gloom though, they've got a slew of picks this year, so if they keep them and pick well, next year will be a lot more enjoyable.

Richmond will likely still be poor, but from a supporter POV at least you'll be seeing some future guns on display.

It makes the process far more bearable when you can actually see who's going to be taking the club forward.

Caro was ebullient after the Swans game and talking up all their young players. So still a fair bit delusion and denial out there amongst the true faithful. And after 3 flags, over-confidence is understandable.
That's almost minister of propaganda stuff.

"It's all fine, nothing to see here"

It was in fact, not fine.

Interesting few minutes scanning through the Richmond forum. The 5 stages of grief are on full display.

One of them is convinced Tom Brown is a better footballer than Max Holmes and that trade was smart. Excellent denial of reality that one.

30% voted for Richmond...
As a supporter group, we're some the of worst in terms of pumping up our kids.

I suppose it's high standards and being spoilt, but every youngster coming through for us is compared to one of the stars of the last 20 years with our supporter base, with a huge amount of revisionist history going into that as well.

Point being, if Geelong supporters actually rate a young group of players, you should listen to us...which is what a lot of us were trying to convey in here during the pre-season.

As a general rule, we don't pump up spuds, aside from the odd nuffie here and there who thinks everyone's going to be a hall of famer.

With the young talent we had prior to 2019/20 when the shift to more quality youth began, we know what pinning your hopes on hack footballers looks like.

Max Holmes 8 coaches votes in a loss, sits equal on the leaderboard with Petracca and just ahead of Rozee. Z-Banger polled well too but that's more for the 'Geelong can't develop players' fred.

Melbourne v Geelong

8 Max Holmes (GEEL)
6 Zach Guthrie (GEEL)
5 Jake Lever (MELB)
4 Kysaiah Pickett (MELB)
3 Max Gawn (MELB)
3 Steven May (MELB)
1 Harrison Petty (MELB)

Brown being better than Holmes is ridiculous. But the trade was probably a win win. Massive win to the cats due to talent identification. But for the tigers, who probably wouldn't have picked Holmes, they turned pick 20 in the most speculative draft ever into a future first - with Brown starting okay.

Cumberland in!

Geelong had shockers from Stanley and Hawkins again. Cam Guthrie another quiet game. Duncan a terrible half before bouncing back in the second. Rohan and Cameron popped up with late goals but didn't have much impact. Stewart has been down on form since his return. The form of these veterans has been underwhelming over the past few weeks.

Stengle, Zuthrie and Holmes received coaches votes again and were clearly our best. Miers had another good game. SDK outside a couple of baffling errors was solid. Close continues to be underrated (20 goals/assists so far as a 6th forward in the pecking order). Mullin came in as sub and did a good job. Dempsey bobbed up with his usual moments of class. We really missed Bruhn and Bowes.

Of this bunch only Holmes is 21 or younger, but the others are in that 23-25 year old bracket that will be required to lead the way as the retirements pile in. And they are already our best players this season as we see decline of a bunch of veterans. They've carried the Cats to a 7-2 start with the 2 losses being close ones. But it goes to show if your veterans have poor games, it makes winning games of football difficult.

Ollie Henry had a quiet game and still kicked 2 as well.

Even though sides just don't beat Gold Coast in NT, this is a good chance for people to get stuck into our likely 2025-2027 era side and froth over that "cliff". It's possible only Cameron plays in 2025 from the injury list - Hawkins, Stanley, Tuohy and Duncan could all be gone.

Just 4 players 30 or upwards tonight: Stewart, C.Guthrie, Blicavs and Rohan. None are in outstanding form. A couple are going solidly and a couple have had minimal impact.

Conway and Neale get a chance to impress, while Bruhn and Bowes could potentially lead the midfield against Gold Coast's A graders. Mullin may get a full game, while Clark continues to get development games more than showing he is yet at this level.

Hopefully the 21-26 year old cohort stand up as they have been doing when available. A loss is fine if the signs of responsibility being taken are there.

Lot of responsibility on Ollie Henry.

Lot of responsibility on Ollie Henry.
Yeah definitely, he might end up more of a CHF tonight. And probably needs to be getting up around that 12-15 disposal mark rather than 8-10, minus Cameron. It's a good opportunity for him. We actually felt the absence of his standard 2-4 combined goals/assists last week. He had just the single goal and no assists. But it was his first quiet game in a while, scoreboard wise.

Right off the bat I'll say our veterans were either missing or played terribly. Those looking to diagnose the result only look there. And yes we'll struggle as that becomes the case permanently (through retirements etc).

So now onto players who will be around the next 7+ years:

Dempsey was superb on the wing. He still has a lot of improvement in him, he's on about game 10 after barely playing in juniors.

Mullin will be a jet, he just needs to find more of the footy.

Once Conway develops a tank and some composure he'll be a good ruck. He's had a lot of injury issues and ruckmen are often late bloomers.

Neale had 2 goals and a goal assist, yet he dropped about 5 easy marks in front of goal. Would he stick some of those away from the humidity? If so, we have plenty to work with. If not, he has plenty to work on. Both are probably true.

O.Henry had 2 goals and (basically) a goal assist via his spoil that landed in Neale. Yet he needs to contest against aerial defenders much better. He lets them mark the ball at will.

Holmes and Miers were typically brilliant, with team mates not on the same wavelength most of the time. They remain at AA squad of 44 level form, if not pushing for the 22. Stengle was less involved but showed the usual moments of class. He's a star small forward.

Zuthrie and J.Henry had shockers. We missed SDK. Overall that was worth 6 goals. There is talent among that group but Henry is concerning at the moment.

Bruhn had his worst game as Cat. It seriously hurt us.

Clark looked lively as a sub, with a nice goal. He's not ready but if Cam Guthrie plays like this, Clark should replace him anyway.

Honestly you can't complain too much about the 25 and unders. Everyone above 26 played a stinker, as simple as that.
