I was a massive Debbie Downer before the draft but to be fair the recruitment team hit this one out of the park, looks like being a great haul

The recruiting team/Duane did really well over the past 2 days but people should not conflate that with the disastrous Baker trade from Clarke. On any view the Baker trade was appalling, particularly how the negotiations were handled. It is a worry moving foward.

I am confident the recruiting team would still have had a very similar draft / good draft and we could have got a better deal for Baker, if Clarke knew what he was doing.

Clarke should still be on notice imo.

What time is the rookie draft
I just finished looking on AFL website and it's not clear. Its usually in the morning (eastern standard time) from memory.

From AFL.com

With the two-night Telstra AFL Draft done for another year, the pre-season draft (PSD) and rookie draft will take place on Friday afternoon from 2.55pm AEDT, which you can watch exclusively live on AFL.com.au and the AFL Live app

So just before mid day in WA

What I liked about our recruiting team this year is they left the draft come to them. They let the bargains fall and didnt take players they liked more than others unncessarily early or franctically trade futures to get early picks in.

Hopefully this is a theme going forward for Duane. I always felt Pieman liked to reach for players he liked, especially mids/smalls and to be honest, he has proven to be a pretty poor judge of mids (good for talls). Reached of O'Neill in the 20s when he hadnt even played stated u18 footy, reached for Chesser when most had him going in late teens/20s. Took overage guys like Foley and Ainsworth in the 30s for some unknown reason. Burgiel at 29. Sigh, you can see why our midfield is pus now.

Can’t help but feel we still need a mature aged plug and play key defender on our list. As great as it is to have young developing talls, it would be tough on them if Gov or Edwards go down.

I was keen on signing Sellwood with our last list spot but the sensible option would be a key defender. Unless of course Sheed retires and then we can get both.

Absolutely spot on. Don’t amalgamate the fantastic work yesterday with that appalling trade and say it all worked out. We could have had Murphy Reid as well, Clarke is very, very lucky the recruiters and team pulled that off.

If Essendon didn’t shit the bed so Shanahan goes early and Freo and Port don’t want the same player one pick behind us this conversation is very different.

I didn't say anywhere that I was happy with what Clarke did. The rest of the recruitment team did a great job over the last two nights with what they were given to work with

If champion goes to cat b rookie, then dewar has to be elevated to main rookie list??

Does that mean today we can't take another rookie at pick 3?

This draft and the talent available, does make me question why we've retained Callum Jamieson this year. Think we could have used another list spot.
We will need delistees next year also . Jamo will be serviceable in the wafl if he can get on the park .

With gov Edwards and bazzo's history of injuries he may even get more afl games

Sheed needs to put in a big preseason, if his body won't let him, he needs to retire and get paid out. I think we could then add in one of the train in players to his spot?
My understanding is you need a list spot or a LTI to have train on players.

Sheed after another round of surgery on his troublesome ankle/foot needs to be put on the LTI list so Burgeil can train on .

Malakai goes on cat B rookie list

Dewar elevated to Cat A rookie list

Take Knobel with pick 3 today

Burgeil gets sheeds spot if he retires

It’s too late for list manipulation according to Phil. If we could I’d move Maric to the main list, Dewar to Cat A, add Champion as a Cat B and take Knobel at pick 3 as a Cat A in the rookie draft.

Bang.

Potentially wait to MSD and take the best performing one from the state leagues?

There surely shouldn't be any action for us there, so we can leave a spot open for an SSP.
Would be premature to give Burgiel another opportunity immediately.
Would rather we trial a few other players.
I can't remember the last time we didn't draft or re-draft a player in the rookie draft.

Shame we missed out on Dennis. Any chance we pick him up today?

Big sliding doors moment for Clancy yesterday, if Sydney match the bid for Cochran as everyone expected then Pies take Dennis instead. I hope we’re talking about how getting him on board but we will 100% take Champion as a rookie one way or another. Still think we should have moved Rawlinson on with the strength of this draft.

We can, but I'd rather we leave a spot open for a train on player.
We can draft as many rookies as we need to fill main list spots.
We've left main list spots open and drafted extra rookies in the past.
Harder to do that now with 38 main list spots rather than 40.
