I think its crucial that we develop the background knowledge required to identify good candidates - and not rely on has been coaches from other clubs.

How did filth identify McRae?

Now that Wright is slowly taking over I hope he will step in and help us with these types of processes.
Obviously I’m just going of limited information but I recall our process where we hired Bolton to be long and thorough, it just didn’t work out, the next two processes were terrible.

Yeah we did …

Committee made up of Judd soccer coach and 1-2 others

I was happy that we had a process and I was also happy with Bolton…

Bolton was really good for culture and nurturing our young draftees as we were rebuilding as well

I thought he might bring in the hawks winning formula but the game started to change and there just wasn’t enough wins unfortunately and the wheels fell off.

I’d be happy with another process like that but we also need a good experienced person as head of football to keep a close eye on footy related matters.

Lloyd has been deplorable imo.

He has and he's worked at being a coach. It was more the sense that Carlton are not Carlton. They are St Kilda in navy blue.
I’m sorry but coaching an U14s school team for two seasons and coaching an interleague side twice over the space of 4 years is not working on being a serious coach, it’s his sons football team

We're at 0-3 but didn't play too badly in the most recent two and could have won all three. The coach hasn't "lost the players" despite the frustrations of things not quite going to plan.

We don't need regime change and back to square one.

We do need to assess what's working and what's not and most likely that points to fresh ideas in the assistant team and specifically someone to bring new perspective on the game plan.

I am leaning more and more towards this way of thinking. I believe we are in the position we are in because the players cannot execute skills, make poor decisions and lack discipline to stick to a plan.
Because they can’t do these things we have to create more opportunities to win so the game plan looks taxing.

Whatever way the club goes I just hope the board doesn’t have too much of a say because pretty much all of them have no football knowledge. Their only input should be rubber stamping whatever decision Cook and Wright make, both of whom have a lot of football knowledge having been key people at successful clubs.

The trash needs to be taken out before we sack Voss:
Evans
Young
Acres
Fogs
Williams
Gov
Doc... I love him
Motlop
Haynes
Cottrell

Honestly, all these guys playing in the same team is comical. They aren't upto it.

How many of them were in the team that made a prelim....? Most of those guys have spots on an AFL list. Most of those guys are suffering the vossening of their talents and what they do provide
If voss is wanting to play a more modern quicker game style, then u cant implement it with one paced mids ect.
Yes you can. In fact most teams have. Kennedy looked faster than any mid we have. He's not. He's fast enough to be in a modern game plan and played as receiver out of the stoppage. It's bullshit this 'waaa it's cuz they're not fast enuff'

No it's because our entire midfield collapses in the stoppages haphazardly and have to run more metres everysingle stoppage than their opponents.
What's interesting is that the game also looks to have completely passed Melbourne by - a side with a list and gamestyle most like ours.
Nono.... That's a manifestation of a club that's completely imploded internally. Factions drugs and all that. Nothing to do with list profile

For ****s sake man it was about the rest of the comment. Not the name. I said that again and you ignored it again. This club is a meek mess. It's St Kilda wearing navy blue. There's no identity or pride

We’ve lead all 3 games at halftime.
The oppo coaches have obviously made adjustments during the break to counter our lead.
Our coaches don’t seem to acknowledge that there may be different tactics thrown at us after halftime by teams that are trailing.
Are they ignorant, stupid or arrogant?

How do people feel about Simpson as a coach.(in general)

The thing is we don't know anything about him so you may as well mention anyone. We need to know what is upstairs on our new coach, not that he played footy as an a-grader, is a great leader, or won awards or premierships, or even played or supported Carlton.

The key thing is we want a coach who has played the game that has strategic nous and an interest or investment in strategic transition of the ball up and down the ground. E.g. find a coach who has played the game but in his childhood, played chess.

Up until the early 2000s, it was draft the best and you win...between 2010-2020 it has been a balance between list and transition/strategy and understanding strategic roles/positions. Now it is a landslide in favour of understanding transition and roles.

For list managers, it's completely moved from 100% best available to now more needs/roles for your list. We are still the side locked in best available 'Cerra, Fogarty, Durdin, Stocker, Kennedy, SPS, Setterfield, its goes on. The 'subtle' list manager selections for roles in today's game is why we have fallen backwards. Zero insight into that part of the game.

Carlton need to change as they are a dinosaur act.

Cool and we will get identity and pride when our club make good appointments, not by gifting jobs to past players who aren’t qualified.

This is a make or break time for us and we need to make good decisions and appoint the right people, pride and results will come

Carlton have not had a see you next Tuesday coach since David Parkin IMO( I don’t count Malthouse).

That’s the coach THIS team needs.

I get the old days are different to now where we approach the players in a more positive way but I take you back to when Sam Mitchell gave it to Scrimshaw on the field in front of everyone, hasn’t turned out that bad.

Mitchell has only just started his journey…looking good atm no doubt but if he keeps doing that sort of stuff it could also go south quickly.

Having said that he may give equal care/discipline to his players so players may value that.

First time in here this year just wanted to see what level the meltdown was at!

For me personally I think Voss has shown he has what is takes to get this team up and playing at the level required to challenge for a premiership. Last year's debacle can be fairly attributed to injuries beyond his control. This year we've been overrun now three games in a row. Blind freddy can see we tire. Is that really Voss' fault? This is the same guy that had us second on the table beating the Cats by 10 goals and 7 goals up in a quarter of football vs GWS.

For me Voss stays, if anything we need to change some of the people around him. For example Hamill still hasn't fixed our defensive stoppages. How is he still in the job after last year?

Voss has won 2 out of 12 games. While leading at half time in a lot of those games.
Club hired a new fitness coach. Voss has been a coach/assistant/ player for 30 years and couldn't see the players weren't fit enough? If the players aren't fit enough what has Voss been watching all pre season? He should have stepped up and made changes. Another reason Voss must go ASAP if players aren't fit enough.
All I heard pre season is the players are training to be quicker and more dynamic. Hopefully we haven't been training for a 100m sprint instead of a half marathon.

Thinking about it…

If we move Voss and Austin on, it would be a great opportunity to do a small or medium refresh of the list.

This list seems to have peaked in the second half of 2023.

We have a 2x Brownlow Medalist, 2x Colman Medalists, 4x Other AA on the list and we’ve won 2 of the last 12 games 😂

I’d be all in for the club to come out and say they got the rebuild wrong and do a mini list rebuild, before Tassie… I’d also be all for Hickmott as coach.

It would put some excitement and hope back into watching Carlton.

All the talk around sacking Voss, for almost his entire time with us, is HURTING out chances of a good coach in the future. Who wants to coach a club that:
  • is constantly crap; but
  • has constantly ridiculous expectations about success and annoints itself premiership favourite every time it strings together two wins in a row; alongside
  • a toxic fan base that flips at the drop of a hat and is abusive and negative even to successful teams/coaches (and so far this season, barely applauds goals, from what I've seen at games); alongside
  • a cowardly board that continuously jumps at shadows and sacks coaches for not meeting ridiculous expectations.

We absolutely HAVE to ride this out. Give Voss this year and next (in a genuine sense, not Teague's experience of being a dead man walking from about round 5). If we miss finals this year and next, I imagine we can mutually agree to part ways on good terms - the perception will be that we gave him a red hot crack, and that we're finally valuing stability over some 1970s notion that you can sack your way to success. That makes us a lot more appealing to prospective coaches, and they'll come more cheaply, allowing money for other off-field roles.

And the fans have to finally accept reality. the goal isn't a premiership or bust every year. Demanding the sacking of everyone up to the bootstrapper because of a slow start to the year just makes Carlton into the meme club that we currently are, and we have to be better than this (and occasionally be 'supporters' for a change).
This is a great post. I personally have many doubts and its incredibly frustrating but I think this is where I land also when I try to take an calm and objective strategic look at things. Well said

Pros and Cons from the Bulldogs game:

Pros
Voss tried something new - faster ball movement and playing more like the current meta.

We again led at half time - Voss got the team to bring 100% effort.

Cons
We got it wrong during the pre-season learning an outdated system. Now we're trying to fix things on the fly, whereas other teams spent the entire pre-season drilling this in.

We again ran out of puff and capitulated in the 2nd half. Some of this is the other team adjusting, the other part is that our gameplan is not sustainable. We have to work harder and run further than the opposition. This is catching up to us in the 2nd half.
