Ok starting to think this is possible as it was a late model iPhone so likely decent waterproof rating. Phone was probably sitting in no more than 1 metre deep fresh water for ~ 3 months. Chances are they will more than likely be able to get data from the phone but it’s not like she was using Strava or any app with good geo capability. I’m just not sure they will find anything really helpful on the phone. Once the phone is switched off I just don’t think there is a lot that happens on a phone.

Do any of these apps record audio?

How would you theorize the phone not being co-located with the body?

And how do you rationalise the selective release of information to the media? Going from public appeals for information to all of a sudden charging POS then saying nothing for weeks, then selectively publicising one or two searches in specific locations.

It's hard to fit all the facts to a criminal mastermind. But it's equally hard to fit all the facts to an absolute moron.

The police decision to release information is at their whim. Without the reasons why, no one can really hazard a guess, they have to play the long game.

There’s a million theories on separating the phone from the body, but none of them give you anything until the suspect spills. Pegging a phone into a dam doesn’t make you a genius, could have been hours after…

I doubt it. But even if you are using something like Strava you still need to save it and download it at the end of your run. If you don’t save it then it won’t be downloaded and stored, but maybe the data is stored in the background.

I don't think it's a whim, but rather a strategy.
They could tell us everything or they could tell us nothing, but in this case it's neither.
They are releasing carefully chosen pieces of information in a very public and selective manner.
This surely must be part of some strategy, and not just random decisions being made.
So where are they going with this?

Its been in the wacky Reddit chat. IDK but the daughters initial comments about her Mum staying strong or something or other gave me vibes that some other type of drama had been going on, IMO.
I thought the daughter said that her mum was a strong woman, and this was when she was only missing, not known as deceased, or that someone had hurt her. We all thought that she might have had an accident while out jogging.

Great question, and apart from a slow burn, I’m wondering what their bent is.

I even go down the rabbit warren of who else are they trying to flush? Even though I’ve held a belief that it’s a solo event….

Drip feeding to a bloke in lock up is an interesting strategy if that’s the case. (And defo not a whim)

I am surprised that she wasn't on Strava. In any case, I have an iphone and watch and the fitness app would automatically kick in if it detected that I was doing an activity. My watch would vibrate on my wrist every 500m or so with a message saying "do you want to record an activity?" Perhaps she was using the fitness app as a tracker? Usually runners will use something to record their runs, especially if they are training for an event. Though I can't speak for all runners, so she may well have not used anything.

So, I just tested my IPhone. I started Strava and then powered down while it was tracking a walk. I restarted my phone and couldn't access anything without entering my pin. Once I entered my pin I could go back into Strava and it had continued to record time while the phone was powered down, but no movement because I was sitting at that point, it had kept the walk open and just resumed it automatically. Interesting that the app continued to keep track of time while the phone was off! How did it do that?? You would think that if the phone was powered down that the app would reset and you would have to start a new activity.

This is what it gave me. It took approx 4 minutes to start the activity, power down and restart and then choose to save activity.

It shows killer took phone from body and separately discarded it. Actively and thoughtfully
Someone found the phone was going to hand it in. Found next day it could've been missing woman and panicked.
Offender accidently killed SM than panicked.
An accomplice ditched the phone
To.prove murder you need to.prove intent and Malice aforethought.
A.phone on its own.does.nothing.

The phone proves it was separated from the victim.
Proves intent.
It doesn't prove intent.
It proves nothing unless police can connect the offender with the phone or the dam. If anything, finding the phone without finding Samantha opens up more possibilities, including one where the phone was disposed of by someone other than the killer.

It would seem that once an activity is started, the app does not consider it to stop when it loses connectivity with the phone. It probably only stops the activity when you tell it to, or when it detects the device has been at rest for a specific period of time. When you restart the phone, the app just picks up the last activity and continues monitoring it. You can confirm that the app will have recorded no 'activity events' during the time the phone was switched off. It did not detect that you sat down.

It could explain how they found the phone though. The app started monitoring again when the phone was turned on and pinged. It would have given them the location the phone switched off maybe?

The phone being on causes the ping. Doesn't need any particular apps to be running, just the phone itself and anything that might use cellular data. The phone being switched off causes a cell disconnect event which is logged.

Yes, what I meant was re the fitness app tracking. Could the phone have been turned on, the app resumed tracking, then it powered down when it was thrown in the dam. Could this have given them a specific location of the phone?
