Sorry to pop in here, but I'll shed some light on this - last season when Sam met Barrass mid-season I spotted him in Fremantle. The very next day the information was out that he was in Perth having talks.

Sam was wearing a hawthorn shorts and a hawks bag with his name on it. No discretion whatsoever :D Don't think he really cares if he's spotted

Very similar comments last year about why we would be targeting Barrass - so far so good on that acquisition. Lewis has never played more than 15 games in a season - safe to say an insurance policy wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Gunston won't go on another year. Scaife isn't a guarantee to make it at senior level. I have no qualms going into next season with Allen, Chol a still recovering Lewis and still developing Dear. List balance, depth and flexibility is so important - look how we have been able to plug gaps this year.
Scaife has kicked 2 or more goals in 5 of his 9 games with Box Hill. He'll get to the level, but may find himself at WCE by years end.

Also, don't forget about McCabe. I believe he'll start as a forward and should see some action at AFL level soon enough.

Lewis is most definitely the better player when both fit. I've seen him double teamed , I've seen defenders double back to stop him from taking overhead marks and also, from the pies game in 2023 , he showed that game he can play as a mobile CHF with great effect. Just needs a bit of luck to be on his side. Hopefully his second half of his career is much better than his first.
I don't think he'll need any luck because he's put in the work rehabbing it. All the long hours of icing it, swimming, stretching and resistance training is about to be put on show.

I can just see it now as he his first goal sails through the big sticks and every Hawk on the ground gets around him and ruffles his hair.

Scaife's best case scenario career progression would be becoming an Oscar Allen.

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Chris Scott nailed it in his press conference earlier today. Was a very reasonable and mature take on Allen meeting Sam. I don’t think there’s really much more to be said about it.

Towards the end of the presser.

He was doing the exact same thing with Travis Boak back in 2012.

Boak, Cameron, Smith x2, Bruhn …….
Yep, but I was more getting at him getting caught out by the media flying interstate to have a trade chat with someone within the captaincy crew at another club during the season.

Sam Grimley used to dominate at VFL level also - it's not always a guarantee it will translate to senior AFL level. Hoping McCabe might become as quality forward as he is a defender or that Scaife might become an AFL-level forward aren't as preferable to me than recruiting Allen who is a known quantity. It's similar to not recruiting Battle last year in the hope that Serong gets to that level over time.

Maybe the mongrel in him wants to expose the hypocrisy over whether meetings happen in secret or not

That’s a fair wack at half the footy media by Scott.

Wow. How dare you change my opinion of Scott. Not on.

Haha
But that was very well put. Kudos to him.
