I don't think it's possible for Newcombe to become our #2 or #3 Mid. He'd already be the #1 Mid and probably 10 clubs. Far more likely he becomes the #1 mid in the AFL than he becomes our 2nd or 3rd. There are very few better mids in the game.
Will Day is a better mid when fully fit

I said a few years ago that we will become a good side when Worpel goes from being our #1 mid to being our #2 or #3 mid.

I am pretty certain that we will become a multiple Premiership side if Newcombe goes from being our #2 mid to our #3 mid.

There aren't many teams in the comp that can keep up with that depth and fire power for 4 quarters.
He was clearly our best player on the weekend. Needed more support and he got it a bit in the 2nd half when Moore and Worps started to impact. I don't see it as he needs to be number 3, McKenzie in particular needs to become number 3 as he has that burst speed and lateral movement that can break lines. Just need a consistent output week to week. On potential he's ahead of Worpel so that makes Worps number 4 in the group. Than you have Nash/ Hustwaite/Ward these types. There's enough depth and if both Day and Newk perform at an elite level it's good enough. Wouldn't be against going 1 more high quality mid at the draft if Reid doesn't eventuate but I think we're ok personally. You don't want to end up like North who have too many.

He may become better than Worpel one day but at the moment he is no where near Worpel. Too skinny and poor disposal in both hand ball and kickes so far. But we all hope he come good soon.

Harley Reid in the team allows us to use Newcombe and Day more strategically wrt workloads during the season, but also add positional flexibility without losing potency in the midfield.

All three can play through the forward line, and Day can roam all over the park.

That would be nice but it looks like he's leaning very heavily towards the Scum. 😔

I thought it was recently reported that Essendon were looking likely to be out of the race?

You mean Sam "fake" McClure tweeted that? Don't trust him, I heard the literal opposite yesterday, and this as close to the horse's mouth as you can get.

I don't agree that he should go to Essendon, but there are multiple reasons he'll choose them.

They could possibly have the best money offer on the table, (that I couldn't confirm) but you'd have to think that could be a massive factor in contract negotiations.

Harely is finding out how hard the AFL is compared to his Jnr days. It's certainly not as fun as used to be for him, that I know for sure, and that's what I was told. He's hating Perth and West Coast right now, for multiple reasons. He may decide that taking the best money offer is better pretending to forge a career as generational player.

There's also room for him in the midfield without having to be the no.1 guy. I also know, believe it or not, Collingwood is second in line. Similar to Essendon but less pull. Collingwood is selling more of a "you don't have to be a messiah" narrative particularly because they already Daicos.

I don’t think anyone knows other than Harley and his manager. If he and his manager are negotiating his next contract like they should you’d keep your cards close to your chest and play the clubs off against each other.
I’d be enormously suprised if it’s anyone else that isn’t Geelong and Hawthorn.

Your post is worded like this is a race. 1st in line, 2nd in line 😂

Not doubting your intel but I find this very hard to believe. He would almost certainly be the messiah at Essendon, particularly if it’s the largest financial offer of all clubs. Likewise going the biggest club in the country in Collingwood would come with enormous stakes. That narrative would really only make sense with maybe Geelong where they seemingly allow players to avoid the limelight a bit more. I see them as our biggest threat.

If he’s to choose the best money offer at the expense of prioritising his career, I would say he’s been very poorly advised.

It's quite ironic that Harley s probably now shopping for clubs that are in the premiership window.

I don't know how many people called the Hawthorn north game a couple of seasons ago the Harley Reid cup where the loser was in pole position. Well this game this week may just well be the Harley Reid cup again, but both teams vying for the win. What a difference a couple of seasons have made.

Collingwood desperately want Rowell (for good reason).

If they don't get him, it will probably be too late to try and pivot to Harley.

He won’t be going to Essendon

Eagles did really well by presenting Harley three different contract choices. İt's a great strategy to see if he signs up by end of the season. İf he doesn't then he's obviously goneski at the end of 2026. So, why wouldn't wce just have that talk for end of this year? Get strong hands in both 2025-26 drafts? İt'll be smart move by them. Make no mistake, we're in this up to our eyeballs.

Spot on, if he hasn’t resigned before season out, then WCE would be nuts not to do a trade this year, as he definitely wants out. Always worth more when in contract, plus they start rebuilding a year early, instead of waiting another year. I also think we are the favourites. Sam definitely caught up with him and his manager during the break. No coincidence his manager was also in town.
