We shouldn't take more than 1 player with an injury doubt on a 35C plus day - and even if Walters didn't have a niggle I'd be concerned about him getting through a full game. Also, Joel Corey on radio yesterday morning was circumspect about the progress of Draper and Fyfe. It seemed they were just ready to be integrate back into training - maybe Draper could come up quicker because he did play the IAS game.

This is going to be a hard team to pick. You'd like to go with Reidy and have the three talls who know each other's game the best in the forward 50m - and there's also the need to make Stewart accountable if he plays in their back half. We don't actually know who Chris Scott will pick as their ruck and he's a coach that has a record of pulling late changes.

Will their first ruck be Stanley, or could it be De Koning or Blicavs and which one would Reidy be best matched to play against. Then if you pick Jackson as first ruck, he's probably going to lose the taps to Stanley. You could have the plan to sub Reidy in the 2nd half but ideally your bench would have a player who could be a marking option in the forward line when Jackson takes over the ruck - and also that plan could go awry if you lose a player during the game.

Jake Kolodjashnij is a new listing as an out for Geelong on their latest injury list to add to the key players already mentioned as outs in Bruhn and Mannagh. Two players with finger injuries - Bruhn and Bews - go figure.

One of the few things I felt could be taken from the preseason Melbourne game was the massive increase in F50 pressure. A big chunk of that was Sonny, though...
I'll believe it when I see it in the season proper. We were terrible at it last year.

It's why my eyes glaze over whenever an "expert" bangs on about our inability to move the ball fast. It's not even a problem. By far our biggest problem was keeping the ball in the forward half so you don't have to move the ball the length of the ground to score.

Geelong are one of the more even teams in the comp in terms of their bottom end being solid (e.g. in the final against Port last year, I reckon there would have been close to 10 Port players who wouldn't have made Geelong's side), and they can cover the guys above without too much fuss.

True, but this is what we're thinking our current list is capable of covering as well.

It does mean there's less players to move around when you get injuries. Jake Kolodjashnij may be a minor out but it would lean more towards De Koning or Blicavs shoring up their backline rather than ruck, or midfielder as Blicavs sometimes can. Stewart was also playing a bit of midfield I saw last year. Jack Henry can play either end. It just means it leans a bit more to a balancing act that could tip the wrong way for the coach if he has to move players about.

From what I just read on the Geelong board, Connor O'Sullivan, a 19yo who has played one game, may be a consideration for a replacement key defender. This is where our 3 tall option Amiss, Treacy and Jackson might the best bet to start with and Reidy rucking.

Get stuffed.

Switkowski kicked 12 goals. 12. All season. Playing 20 games. That’s absolutely laughable. And he still gets picked. The club has made him a role that’s somehow irreplaceable

I’d take Sturt’s 2 possessions with 2 goals over Switkowski little ‘pressure’ acts that somehow warrants him a selection playing ‘half forward’
Way to out yourself as a mental midget. Stick to Auskick analysis champ.

You said you value goal kicking forwards. If that’s your only metric then you would happily swap Switta for Owies would you not? Or does this only apply when Sturt is the 1 and a bit goal a game forward
2 goal forward.

And it still doesn't matter, Owies doesn't play for Fremantle, I don't have to make that hypothetical decision.

If you were to ask me if I would play Sturt ahead of Switkowski (which actually is the question being asked), then yes. Yes I would.

I think that's a bizarre take. Forward half pressure is incredibly important and Switta is the only one does it at an acceptable level on our list.
I haven't heard forward half pressure being a feature of the pre-season, although the Melbourne game was quite good.

Maybe it is at an acceptable level for our game plan?

No he’s a 1 and a bit goal forward like I said.

Anyway playing Sturt over Switta is an absurd take.

They should switch the game times. WB v NM play the early game under the roof in the aircon of Marvel & Geelong v Freo play the late game.

They should but they won't 😒
I mean this fits into the "nice idea" realm, but it would take some seriously good justification to try and move one game at short notice, let alone 2.

Also there is no aircon, I assume you were beng funny though.

IMG_4005.jpeg The main session will determine lineup for the game. Whoever gets out on the track should have a chance to play. 🤞 fingers crossed no risk approach. We don’t need anymore long term injuries to start the season.

Availability to be confirmed with training session today, but this is not a terrible starting 22 by any stretch.

Round 1 team.

Ryan Pearce Walker
Clark Cox Chapman
JOM NOD Sharp
Freddy Treacy Switta
Jackson Amiss Sturt

Reidy Serong Brayshaw

Johnson Wagner Reid Banfield

Sub: Walters/Draper/Voss

Banfield is there to play a defensive role on Stewart, Reid is the 7th mid who can alternate with Switta through the forward line. Johnson the 4th inside mid rotation with NOD, Brae and Serong.

If Walters can play a quarter he’s my pick for Sub.

Changes from Rnd 22 last year:
Pearce > Draper
Reidy > Tabs
Treacy > Voss
Reid < Fyfe
NOD < Young

Massive improvement to our spine with Treacy, Reidy and Preace replacing Voss, Tabs and Draper.

Tough ask first up, but not insurmountable. Liking that we are the underdogs, always seems to help the boys get the right mindset.
