Review Round 1 v Geelong

Chris Scott's presser was fairly enlightening on the disparity of attitudes & game plan. He spoke a fair bit about focusing on our game plan and taking it away from us, making a point of saying you can't expect to go out and hope your talent will beat their talent in modern AFL.

You will consistently hear JLO talk about how we just need to focus on our own game, and yet yesterday, the oppositions well executed strategy to minimise our damaging plans resulted in us being very easy beats.

Mostly shutting down Clark's rebound off of half-back, resulted in Wagner & Walker distributing it mostly inefficiently (side not, I think Wagner is WAFL quality but he was OK).

Young's absence really made it easier to control Brayshaw & Serong when it mattered, O'Meara benefited from that, one of his better games, but did little damage.

Our wings of Worner, Sharp & O'Driscoll really struggled to penetrate, giving us no attacking options out wide. It's not a bold statement to say Worner isn't close to AFL quality, inconceivable that he gets a start ahead of Chapman in any position when fully fit.

Jye Amiss is probably the easiest player in the game to stop. He simply can't beat good defenders at the moment.

Huge concerns about the coaching as well, nothing worked.

Primary game plan resulted in it being game over after the first quarter. Stop the bleeding game plan was some of the most unwatchable football I've seen and we couldn't even score. 'Set sail' mode in the last quarter ended up in us conceded 10 goals, one for.
**** I forgot about that set sail sign. Never wanna see that shit every again

Amiss has been Fremantled.

Both amiss and Treacy didn't have games they would be proud of but you would give Treacy maybe 5/10 and Amiss 1/10. That can't be your level on a bad day.

Serong and Brayshaw well held but battled. Missed quality ball in hand with young Walters Bolton out.

Johnson looked good. If he could lower his eyes and hit a leading target could be a nice weapon. Seriously wtf I don't think I've seen him hit a lead ever and scouting report on him predraft was he had great skills with his draft videos showing him hit lead after lead.

Imagine playing 9 defenders and coughing up 150 pts....

Cox is shyte. You aren't talented enough to be laconic. That contract will haunt us. We should have played him as 2nd ruck and gone with an extra runner instead of reidy.cox can't defend 1v1.

Zero run off half back. Clark is a weird one. Inexplicably great in the contest, quick but zero run off half back. Must be coaching surely? He's completely not like advertised. I thought we were getting an attacking half back with questionable defensive skills. Our better and most consistent defender but for Freo to be too 4 he needs to show more ball in hand. We need someone who sees and plays the angles at half back.

Feel this game was lost on Thursday night. It's a good thing we didn't reveal too much of the game plan vs IAS...

Here’s a stat

We took 5 contested marks for the whole game.

5. Amongst 23 players and almost 2 hours of footy. And Sniss was the only forward to kick one

An even worse stat for me is tackles inside 50. Geelong 23-5 Fremantle.

Pressure rating and particularly forward half pressure was a massive problem for us last year (I think we were ranked 16th for pressure acts or something ridiculous) and has clearly not been corrected over the summer. When the ball hits the ground in our f50 (which happened a lot yesterday because we were dropping everything) we are completely fkd. F50 ground ball gets were Geelong 25-16 Fremantle.

The effort all day yesterday was disgraceful. Felt like every contest had a Geelong outnumber.

We make Treacy try and take pack marks with 4 or 5 others because of how long we hold onto the ball in the back half. How about some 1v1 or 1v2 by kicking quickly onto the F50 maybe like Shannon Neale and Jeremy Cameron get.

As much as I hate to rag on players I don’t get the Switta love. He’s totally forgettable, doesn’t score and no Htb calls his way.

Yep well said.

A bit too much bathwater being consumed down at the ARC.

I agree with your assessment of Cox. If he can't mark the ball he has nothing else to contribute.

Yep there were two distinctly different sets of rules for HTB and 15m kicks yesterday. That's the angriest I can remember getting at umpiring for a long time.

Prior opportunity didn't exist at all when we had the ball and then the exact same thing was never paid in reverse.

But it was the 15m kicks that really pushed me to the brink of throwing my remote through the TV. The new crackdown was in full force for any of our kicks that looked remotely 20m or less, while the Cats were still paid mark after mark for their 10m kicks just like the good old days.

The 50 metre penalty against Wagner in the last quarter which gifted Smith his first Geelong goal was wrong. Borderline free kick at best.

The umpire just assumed he marked it and then dealt with. On replay he never marked it and it was heavy body clash and spoil. Worst decision I’ve seen. They actually showed our coaches box and it was bewilderment. I hope they at least ask for a please explain on a few decisions including that one.

Game was shot but at that point umpires were just pleasing the crowd.

The game yesterday reminded me of the first derby last year and the bulldogs game (post bye game). For whatever reason, the boys were simply not mentally on task yesterday. They were trying, but things were just not clicking for them.

That being said, I am so sick of seeing this team constantly fumble and miss simple passes. Players that do this constantly should be dropped. I saw many opportunities squandered yesterday because we missed a simple pass or failed to pick the ball up with a single grab, and this obsession with handballing to stationary target is killing us.

The team has yet to find a method that can deal with a team's pressure. As soon as I heard Geelong's pressure rating was 200+ in the first, I knew we were in trouble.

We were 21 points down in the last quarter and we rolled over like an obedient dog.

Yep. They out tackled us by 40.

Just add pressure and we wilt…again.

Just being non competitive and getting smashed like that would be bad enough but it looks even worse after all the bravado and tough talk we heard from the club leading into it. Claiming they were ready to win the whole thing but it didn't look like much has changed or improved from last year. I know we had some big outs but it's no excuse. If we are banking on having our best 25 fit and available for every game to win a flag we are in trouble.

Now I've calmed down.....

Game was won and lost in the midfield. Reidy outclassed in the ruck and around the ground while the mids were comprehensively beaten. Geelong came with intent to tackle our players out of it, they succeeded and our players relented (fumbly because of the pressure and a couple short stepped contests)

Pretty hard for the defence when the inside 50 kicks have no pressure on the kicker.

Pretty hard for the forwards when there was minimal clean ball coming in.

In simple terms, Geelong wanted it more.

I'm consoling myself that Brisbane lost 5 of their first 7 last year.

Frustrating was the fumbles and over handling on the back half and wing. What should been fwd entry for us resulted in fwd entry and score from them

You have 5 or 6 players with questionable AFL qualities, 2 genuine tough nuts in
Treacy and Serong, next is Brayshaw and a team of front runners.
IMO we have never replaced Carr, it’s been the same dribble for 30 years, the next white
knight player, never looking to be the best team off field.
Our better assistants get poached after some success, that success leads to numerous false dawns, rinse and repeat.
Only once have we shown some ruthlessness, and sadly that menace is a distant memory.

Don't let feelings get in the way of facts...

He has dropped off and was well off his best yesterday. At his best he was/is an elite pressure forward.

If one was to wstch yesterday's game in isolation, the conclusion would be that Switta offers nothing, because that would be an accurate summary of his game yesterday. That doesn't mean is reputation is fabricated.

Freo only played one genuinely poor quarter yesterday, which was the 2nd quarter.
The first ten minutes of the game, I thought Freo looked the better team. Then came the repeated not 15 and dodgy HTB calls, plus Geelong nailng their limited chances, and Freo were flustered. They spent the second quarter fumbling, completely losing the plot. This is highlighted by how Treacy seemed to rush his goal kicking routine and spray it. I sensed that they lost all composure for that quarter.

Third quarter they played well.

Fourth quarter they gambled on playing all out attack, but the petrol tickets ran out due to having to charge at the cats from 10 goals down.

Forget the last quarter. That's just what happens when you cook yourself trying to chase down a lead. The game was lost in the second quarter.

It all looks so much worse in the moment then it actually was.

It's not an excuse, however, every person on here agrees, there were two sets of rules being played to yesterday. It is disgraceful. But, it got in our guys heads and they lost their composure. They need to be better than that, but we can put it down to a round 1 game being played at 10.30am in summer heat.

That game was a free hit. I'm writing it off and expecting a big response next Sunday.

The most depressing thing is how much better Geelong’s youth is than ours. Holmes, SDK, Henry, Humphries, Dempsey, Neale, Clark, Knevitt, (Bruhn) s***s all over what we have coming through.
This is just totally incorrect. A lot of those guys are average to below average. We lost to system, not talent.
