We had similar inside 50's compared to them but our kicking was very poor. They have 3 giant defenders and 3 giant forwards, so our forward entry had to be low and fast. We don't have enough players who can take those options.

Steele's decision-making and kicking today was simply not up to standard, sore knee or not. But Garcia and Windy can play hard tough footy. Byrnes was very good all game, ditto Wood.

Nas is elite wherever he plays.

Their tall power and forwards cut us open at one end and we lacked one ourselves. Also lost it out of the middle.

We looked like a young side. Josh Battle, Max King and TDK would have all been handy yesterday. Also Butters or
Matt Rowell.

GWS talls didn't hurt us 2 each to Cadman,Hogan & Stringer it was more Greene that hurt us keep him to 2 it all changes.

Caminiti just needs to keep with Darcy.
Yep - bit sad we had to waste a player on Stringer, should have just tried to double team Toby but I don't think that would have made a difference.

Add King to the front half and Dougal to the back and it would make a world of difference.

As expected Marshall got a bath from Briggs at ball ups - he's the type of ruck that Marshall really struggles with and needs to really dominate around the ground but that didn't happen yesterday.

The thing with Jones is he’s there in the midfield as a point of difference with his burst of speed. Well that wasn’t there yesterday. No burst, no speed. He looked like he’d just completed a marathon. Didn’t cope with the heat at all.
All I can remember is him plodding along behind opposition trying to catch them with no success.

A pity our experienced guys put in ordinary performances- lack of leadership killed us when the pressure was really on. Our entries into the forward half really played into GWS hands and the smalls were nowhere to be seen in the second quarter -no front and centre in marking contests. Lyon would be disappointed with the quality of our tackling overall. Trav and Collard looked every bit like the young inexperienced players they are, but when they build their tanks, they will be much better. I would like to see Hastie get a full game. Hugo put up a great effort, as did NWM and Byrnes and Sharman, who sadly had to be played up the ground later, so we missed scoring opportunities.

Who is Jones keeping out of the side at the moment though? The only other fit mid is Boxhall who hasnt played a game and hasnt been busting doors down just yet in the twos.

I know we want to blood all these young prospects but you have to balance the team and bringing in another 0 gamer is already pushing the others 1st/2nd year players even harder.
Also Boxshall is a strict inside mid. Jones played some inside mid minutes when Richmond was tearing us a new one but has spend most of his time on the wing so Boxshall isnt a replacement for that role.

He also hasn’t played a game in 2 weeks now and his game prior was only okay.

Let’s allow him to find form before proposing that he will fix our issues against a premiership contender

Henry is a better replacement for Jones

Henry in for either Jones or Trav.

Tempted to keep Trav in because he’s our future, but if we’re going on performance, and likely performance, Jones keeps his spot.

It’s such a shame King isn’t available.

Byrnes isn't a perfect player but here's turnovers for yesterday:

7: Owens
6: Sinclair
5: Wilson
4: Wood, Windhager, Wanganeen-Milera, Hall, Garcia
3: Steele, Sharman, Marshall, Macrae, Jones, Byrnes
2: Travaglia, Hill, Hastie
1: Wilkie, Webster, Stocker, Higgins, Collard
0: Caminiti

I don't think his disposal is quite as bad as it's made out to be. More of a problem for me is his contested defence, but that was actually pretty good yesterday. Yes, the obvious caveat is that Greene kicked a million goals and Byrnes was matched up on him for most of the day, but he's a pretty good player and I think most of his goals were in traffic.

8 contested possessions for Sincs, 9 for Owens. Wilson is a bit of a butcher at the moment but as a high octane second year player who has time to clean up his disposal. Byrnes had 4.

Byrnes has 20 contested possessions and 15 turnovers for the season so far. The amount of unforced errors he makes is the issue. You shouldn't be turning over the ball when you have it under no pressure.

Thoughts:

  • we chose short. It showed.
  • Despite that, Wood did a really good job in essentially the role we want Max King to play, and Sharman was excellent also. Owens is the one who needs a genuine tall next to him, because he isn't a genuine tall himself.
  • Teams have started putting work into Macrae.
  • I've made this point before, but in 2022, Higgins ends up with two touches in that game. The fact he kept working and ended up with two goals shows his development.
  • 82 not the problem - 110 was
  • We miss Josh Battle
  • Byrnes everywhere. For all his well ventilated faults, he appears the very epitome of a Ross Lyon footballer. So remember who coaches us when railing for his sending to Coventry
  • Garcia just needs a tank, but I'm starting to be convinced he'll make it
  • Maybe just not take Jones interstate?
  • Ross is now installing the final pieces in Nas before he destroys the comp.
  • We're not a bad team. GWS are a good team.

Toby easily sprinted away from him for a goal

I'd consider giving Hastie a full game over Trav. A few weeks more weeks playing full-time mid minutes at Sandy won't hurt Trav.

Toby Green played his best game for sometime but our lack of talls assisted his game. Because our mid sized players had to support our talls in the air etc Toby was able to sneak out the back and find space.

Having said that our issues started with our inability to pressure their ball movement from defence. To often we went forward which basically then just set up GWS next scoring opportunity, they marched it out and scored and we hardly ever slowed them. Apart from a few we were soundly beaten all over the ground by a mature well drilled side.

I dont know if Im imagining it but Rowan Marshall looks to be playing a bit lighter this season than last. Its really hurting him against the stronger bigger opponents, he got absolutely owned yesterday. With our obvious lack of height forward and Marshall struggling, I think the club were mistaken not playing a second ruckman yesterday.

Joffaboy you mentioned the Adelaide game was an aberration for Jones. Are the 3 Adelaide games now an aberration?

Despite your assurances, his preseason wasn't ground breaking. Jones is doing what he's always done, he shows flashes of being a very good player. Then barely gets a dozen touches and no tackles/marks.

A player of his age and experience needs to find ways to get involved, at least get yourself some big tackle numbers if you can't get the ball on your off days. Look below, those numbers just aren't good enough when you are keeping a kid out of the team.

Where did I say his game was an aberration? I said like Steele, like Macrae, he had a down game.

What are you on about?

As far as what I report at training. I call what I see. You don't like it, up to you champ, I don't put my worth on opinion of football like some obviously do. I called Collard wouldn't make it.
You don't like what I post? Scroll past, but don't make up bullshit and try to have a go at me.
Jog on.

Not sure that King will ever have the tank to play as far out as Wood does.

Exactly, poor game. Is in the team for his burst difference, if that's not there he is a liability.
Like many when the inside mids fire, he looks good, when they are beaten like yesterday, he looks ordinary.
Like every player on the list, if there is a better player on the list, he can be replaced.

Fair enough, Wood was good, even one great mark when the ball was not delivered in front of him. But he did get outmarked a few times. With our smalls, we need a Kosi type in the team at all times.

Jonesy is going to be on the chopping block next week I think. 4 kicks 9 hbs, 1 mark, 0 tackles, 2 free kicks against (yes he might have been unlucky not to get a high tackle call but he still was too slow to dispose of it), 61% disposal efficiency. That's a really bad game.

He's in there to offer pace but his form is back down unfortunately. If Henry is fit then he has to come in for him.

Tobie was also poor but I suspect they'll give him another chance.

Briggs is one of a handful of rucks that always kills Marshall. Tough day for Marshall, really hope he's ok and can respond next week.

I thought Steele showed a bit in the last quarter. Hopefully a bit of a return to form late, it's worth remembering he hasn't played for about a month.

They got 10 goals from turnover. That's the game, some of those turnovers were impossible to defend. Our game otherwise looked in good shape. That's an elite team with elite talent, and take out some of the unforced errors we could've pushed them further.

Splitting the 2 games in Adelaide is a result i would've taken at the start of the year. Now we go back home and against good opposition of course, but we're 4 goal better team at that venue over the last 10 games or so.

This next block of games will give us a real indication of what this season will look like, and i can't wait to see it!

I know I'm a broken record but I'd love to see Owens spend more time on ball. Have players running off him ready for a handball.
A bit like Keeler in the praccy matches, when he came in and looked good in the 4th qtr, when in the real stuff looks a bit out of his depth, Chito looked good in the 4th when the fire was out of the game.

Look dont get me wrong, he looked good in there, but one sample isn't enough. If he can run through there, like Wilson, Trav, Windy, Sincs, Hastie, even Henry, it allows the coach to move the magnets and get some separation or break a tag etc.

Owens in the ruck worked a treat last quarter. Marshall had a very extended break at the end of the third. 8 minutes or something. Reckon he is carrying his pre season injury still. Can’t recall what that was though.

True that we can’t be certain if his last quarter performance was “real” or not. But we also played a completely different style in the last. That style looked good, albeit the above doubt.

He looked to roll and ankle or something similar in a contest midway thru the 3rd. Hopefully just got restrapped, Fox showed him going down to the rooms with 5 mins to go in the 3rd.

2-2 would be my expectation, This week is toss of the coin, Brisbane will beat up on our kids similar to yesterday, and we should be Freo and Carlton. We win this week, go 3-1 in that group, and we probably end up winning 13 or 14 for the year which would be remarkable
