Not too worried about the result, or perhaps I was just resigned. I don’t really understand our game plan in the first three quarters, or maybe we just didn’t execute it. With such a small team you’d have thought less bombing it in. The last quarter showed some good intent and dare, however GWS could have had the que in the rack.

Not many answers really and not much revealed.

Joffaboy you mentioned the Adelaide game was an aberration for Jones. Are the 3 Adelaide games now an aberration?

Despite your assurances, his preseason wasn't ground breaking. Jones is doing what he's always done, he shows flashes of being a very good player. Then barely gets a dozen touches and no tackles/marks.

A player of his age and experience needs to find ways to get involved, at least get yourself some big tackle numbers if you can't get the ball on your off days. Look below, those numbers just aren't good enough when you are keeping a kid out of the team.

You go ahead and keep knocking him. It's just the internet.
Sorry but this is fan forum discussing our team .... bottom.line is that his level/scope is limited .... he is a soldier who tries ... really tries but if we want to improve ... as in Top 4 improve .... he isn't in our best 22

It's my opinion along with many others .... if you can't see his limitations it ain't my problem

In rounds 2 & 3, he was very serviceable,
yeah, last two rounds, he has been quiet :(

No, l agree with that assessment. Still don't see the need to shit on him 365.

Obviously the boys were depressed after spending a whole week in Adelaide.
There is nothing to do there but stay inside and play COD.
Also the tap water there gives you the runs.
That's why everyone has a pura tap, or they get spring water delivered by 11 Litre bottles, this spring water comes from the Adelaide hills and is some of the best in the country.

Surely Jones is just about relegated to depth. I'm not sure Boxshall plays in his place but I reckon Clark or Dow or Phillipou would, probably Henry too though a slightly different position, maybe Carroll also if/when he's fit. Looks to me like he's playing to bring experience and because we're short on numbers in there.

Jones was our best player in the 1st half against Geelong in round 2.
A shame he has gone missing in the last two. :(

100%, he then feasted on the Tigers in round 3. When I said he was lucky he did well against Geelong I was made to feel like a fool who didn't know anything. Either he is the barometer, or he's a downhill skier... the answer probably lies within our preconceived thoughts about him.

I've said previously that for us to improve, we need to be pushing guys like Jones out of our best 23.

I do understand the complexities of selecting a young side with injuries - but surely his inconsistency cannot be tolerated or blamed on injuries much longer can it?

I thought they showed a bit today. GWS are a top 3 team. We are not. That ground demands very clean, fast and precise disposal. GWS are ahead of us in that. But we stuck in and the scoreline was respectable.

The young kids are getting games into them. Today highlighted how important it is that we get NAS signed up.
Can't underestimate the heat and the effect last week's game had on us.

Last week's game was one of the more physical games we've played for a while and we are predominantly a bunch of kids.

Giants were way too good for us and so they should be considering where their list sits. Clean up our sloppy disposal, get some important players back and we are competitive at worst (against the best).

Who is Jones keeping out of the side at the moment though? The only other fit mid is Boxhall who hasnt played a game and hasnt been busting doors down just yet in the twos.

I know we want to blood all these young prospects but you have to balance the team and bringing in another 0 gamer is already pushing the others 1st/2nd year players even harder.

That's where the selection balance is vital right?

I don't think it's as simple as a like for like replacement though, which I know you didn't say.

If Jones goes out, someone already in the team covers his spot. Someone like Hill, Byrnes, Hall or Wilson for example - which is where you'd be finding his replacement.

Henry (assuming he's back to full fitness) is too good for VFL footy, rotate Hill, Henry and Hall through that role.

Butler also, when fit, would push someone up the field into Jones' spot. King when fit, pushes Wood up to the wing. Pou, well he'd be another. I think Boxy will be a beauty, but yes, having him, Hugo, Windy and Tobes for example would be irresponsibly inexperienced.

Even playing someone like Hastie in defence pushing Stocker into the middle for those explosive bursts could be an option.

Either way, we pay people ridiculous money to make these selection decisions, but it's not like our squad is bereft of options.

Agree. I think Henry comes in for Jones and takes his cbas. Wilson/Hill push up to take Jones' wing mins, Henry takes their HF mins

Still reckon we have gone too early on this "Owens is not a mid" idea.

Was pleased Lyon gave him a run in the last. Will be a fair more useful player if he can have a 5-10 minute burst a couple of times a game.
Agreed, takes time to be a mid , learn the craft. Came up with some clearances that we otherwise struggled to get.
Used his size. Keep at it

Over 5 weeks Jones has had 1 great game, 1 decent game and 3 poor games. That's about standard over the course of his career and it's probably what we can expect moving forward. Henry seems to be progressing well so I'd bring him in for Jones. Would send Trav back to Sandy to build some form as well. He's had a taste, let's give Boxshall a turn now. I don't see the point in persisting with Byrnes but it seems turnovers are fine with the coaches as long as GPS numbers are good.

We desperately need another tall in, but again maybe we stay small to cover more KMs.

Certainly not a bad idea to have him bulldoze the oppo for 5-6 mins every now and then. Particularly if he's getting beaten in the air by a gun key defender.

Byrnes isn't a perfect player but here's turnovers for yesterday:

7: Owens
6: Sinclair
5: Wilson
4: Wood, Windhager, Wanganeen-Milera, Hall, Garcia
3: Steele, Sharman, Marshall, Macrae, Jones, Byrnes
2: Travaglia, Hill, Hastie
1: Wilkie, Webster, Stocker, Higgins, Collard
0: Caminiti

I don't think his disposal is quite as bad as it's made out to be. More of a problem for me is his contested defence, but that was actually pretty good yesterday. Yes, the obvious caveat is that Greene kicked a million goals and Byrnes was matched up on him for most of the day, but he's a pretty good player and I think most of his goals were in traffic.

We had some really good patches against quality, hardened opposition. The third quarter steam train killed the game off which is probably where our review will largely focus. That could have been an 80 pointer easily, but we kept showing signs till the end. That’s a small sign of growth in itself.

Sam Darcy might kick eleventy billion goals next week though which is my primary concern looking ahead!!
GWS talls didn't hurt us 2 each to Cadman,Hogan & Stringer it was more Greene that hurt us keep him to 2 it all changes.

Caminiti just needs to keep with Darcy.
