But now the AFL has spoken to the MCG about its ability to host a game on Labour Day eve, the weekend of March 8 and 9, which would fall at the end of Opening Round and give Victorian fans at least one game to attend.
That long weekend also features Melbourne’s Moomba festival.
The AFL doesn’t typically have access to the MCG until mid-March, around the 14th or 15th.

THEORETICAL OPENING ROUND 2026 FIXTURE

Saturday March 7, 4pm: Gold Coast vs Essendon, People First Stadium

LOL. How long before they do the same with Gather Round?

Opening Round is a crock, but it did give Kenny(tm) an out for our woeful first performance.

AFL (Probably)

2026 - We'll open Gather Round with Essendon v Carlton at the 'G'

2027 - We'll have half the Gather round games at the 'G'. It'll be like Gather Round State of Origin.

2028 - Gather Round will now be at the 'G'

2029 - Gather Round will be at the 'G' until 3057. Only Victorians will be able to attend and watch the games on T.V. All other states will be sent a 1m x 1m section of MCG turf to have sex with (that's what we do in Victoria).

They could just add the remaining 4 interstate teams to play against the remaining 4 Victorian teams and call it round 1.

It is so obvious to all that the AFL could play 2 games in every state (3 in VIC) and actually embrace the fact that Aussie Rules is the only real 'national' football code.

But no, gotta pander to the Vics and toss Collingwood's salad.

Gold Coast I think are good but their first 6 rounds are 5/6 of last years bottom 6 teams and a bye.

We won’t know anything about them for a while yet.
The difference is they are winning the away games against shit sides this year. Last year that's what cost them a finals spot. As we well know, if you can feast on the shit teams, you're a good chance to make finals. Of course, as noted, we won't know if they can beat the good sides for awhile, to see if they (unlike Port) might do something if they do make finals.

So a Gather 'round the Eastern sea board round as it were. WA must be thinking wtf?

Start on Tuesday or Wednesday night and put all clubs in it.

Exactly. 2 games in WA; 2 more in VIC.

Tuesday-Friday: NE states
Saturday-Sunday: WA & Vic

Saturday:
Afternoon, MCG (RIC v CAR)
Evening, Optus & Marvel

Sunday:
1st game, MCG
2nd game, Optus

They've been talking about this a while in the scandals forum.

To think that I felt sorry for them in 2016 and merely wished that they would just be competitive.

Win the flag and essentially back to back Number 1 picks.
