Opinion North Melbourne Priority Picks Part 2 - 2023/2024

Brisbane trading for an old Hodge, WC for Sam Mitchell should be the kind of trades North need to try and emulate.
Good call.

Dees with Daniel Cross, Jordan Lewis other examples.

GWS did the same initially too, rather than going down the GC sugar hit route (i.e Ablett). North need to look at their 2025 first rounder and look to add 3-4 really solid players, that will be better than any draft pick.

Reckon any handout comes with Brady Rawlings being shot out of a cannon as part of the deal, is that their guy? He sucks.

A hardnut solid citizen like Callum Ward is invaluable. Not many like him.

Not sure if that's what North thought about getting Corr but he's been awful.

It's even worse - Aidan Corr was brought in to be elite.

Remember after the Great Roo Cull of 2016, we went 15th, 9th, 12th and then won the first two games of 2020. At that stage there was probably some optimism about how things were going. We were close to re-signing Ben Brown (the only sticking point was 4 years vs 3 years with an option for the fourth), and so chasing a 26yo 100-game defender who'd played in a Grand Final, and who would finish top ten in the GWS B & F made a lot of sense. Offering five years is not something you do for a solid citizen.

Corr's problem is that he's being asked to play a role that he's not suited to. With McKay leaving and Logue out he's been the main defender, and that's just not his go. If he was third defender behind those two (or even Logue and Comben) it's not so bad.

North has already traded both 2024 PP's. not a chance they are getting more

"The League confirmed North Melbourne will receive the following: One end-of-first round selection in the 2023 AFL Draft (currently pick 19) Two end-of-first round selections in the 2024 AFL Draft (currently picks 19 and 20) The continuation of the club's ability to have two additional rookie list spots in season 2024"

We had 2023 picks given to us in 2022 which were then traded, and still got more 2023 picks.

Frankly the AFL will do whatever the hell they want.

They already got their PP, put the hat away for a couple more years before asking for more.

IF the AFL want to help them out further then do it with off field assistence, maybe give them an additional soft cap allowance for a couple extra development coaches or somethign to get the most out of the plethora of 1st round picks now on their list.

There are other clubs struggling other than Nth who have already been given one hand out. Any draft concessions given to Nth only further hurt the other struggling clubs.

The issue isn't the 'talent', they've had enough opportunities to acquire it.

It's the fact that most of said talent isn't being developed either properly, or fast enough.

That and they seem devoid of leadership on-field.

Draft assistance won't fix that, it'll probably just exacerbate the issue further.

That's what submarined Melbourne 10-20 years ago in my opinion: it's easy to say now that those early draft picks around the 2002-2011ish decade were all duds and mistakes, but my recollection is that the vast majority showed early promise in their first couple of years and plateaued very quickly. Which suggests that it may have been the development as senior players that was the problem, not so much the initial talent identification.

I can see us getting 2 PPs at the start of the first round

Don't deserve nothing had already enough assistance they look uncompetitive and players just coasting around.

At some point don't you just have to let Clarko see if he can sort it out over a few years?
That's the plan. This thread is full of posters of other clubs jumping at shadows. Patience is required.

Richmond PPs -

1993 - PP3 - Justin Murphy (12 games)
2004 - PP1 - Brett Deledio (243 games)
2007 - PP18 - Alex Rance (200 games)

6219 points

NMFC PPs -

2022 - A 2nd and 3rd round we had to trade
2023 - 2 x end of 1sts with the caveat of 'if you improve you lose them lol

3170 points

If we got a pick 1 PP at the end of this season, assistance for each club would be equal lol

They've had enough hand outs. Enough is enough.

That’s hilarious coming from a Richmond supporter. Forgotten about getting Deledio as pick 1 as a priority pick or Rance at pick 18? What did North get? Pick 21 & 22.

Don’t complain about handouts when your own club has received more.

North got 3 end of first round picks over 2 seasons and extra rookie spots. Plus being gifted pick 3 for Ben McKay. How many 1st round selections does one club need?

They would not be in this position had they not cut most of the senior players too soon and drafted and traded poorly for years.

At some stage they have to get off the tit, take some responsibility for their own actions and make some smart decisions.

Free agency compo has nothing to do with priority picks mate.

In comparison to other clubs that have been in Norths situation in the past, a couple of picks in the 20’s and extra rookie spots is nothing. Go have a look at what Gold Coast got a couple of years back.

I just find it very rich for supporters of clubs that have received far, far higher priority picks in the past sooking it up when another club gets them.

Off the top of my head. Hawks, Magpies, Demons, Tigers, Saints, Eagles, Blues, Bulldogs, have all had high first round priority picks, a lot of them were top 5 picks, I know this because at the time Norths picks were effected, but no one cared, we just had to suck it up.

Same goes for teams like Richmond that are looking down the barrel of a rebuild, but will be stuck middle of the table without access to top end talent, especially with the Tassie side coming in soon.

At least you have those 3 flags to keep you happy for a long.

No. Their off field team need to be scrutinised.
If they can’t present a plan that is tailored that has a vision to ensure the long term viability of the club off the field and stability and structure to create on field success, the club should be put into administration and managed by the AFL.
