West Coast still need another 4-5 drafts like this to replace their Dad's Army
Cripps
Yeo
McGovern
Kelly
Duggan
Ryan
Sheed

Shouldn't be last then third last with list like that. Spuds
I actually think some of their veterans like Yeo, McGovern and Kelly contribute more than ours, which is not a good thing for them by the way.

not really coming from the clouds if theyve played a grand final 2 years prior
The question is who predicted then to make the GF based on their personnel pre-season. (that could equally apply to '22 pre-season predictions).

Answer is almost nobody...not only that some even had them outside the eight.

So discounting hindsight analysis, that pretty much equals coming from the clouds.

Horse's whole coaching career was propped up by COLA and Academy access.

I'd dare say we are sitting in a similar position to them having won a flag and made finals consistently if we had the same advantages.
I'll give you Heeney, but where are all these other incredible Academy players? Also, Cola hasn't been a thing for a while now. Personally, I think their success is more from shooting the lights out at the draft, the likes of Parker, Warner and Gulden being second round picks (or later) and Papley a rookie pick???

wouldnt be relying on media talking heads to actually have any semblance of analysis tbf, theyd won 15 games in 2021 and have been in the 8 since then? with a bunch of youth coming through since then, theyre not some miracle team coming out of nowhere imo

They had COLA when they won the flag in 2012 and then recruited Franklin. You're kidding yourself if picking up the arguably best player of the last 15 years didn't significant benefit them.

Academy wise they've picked up the following as major contributors:
Heeney
Mills
Gulden
Blakey
Wicks
Campbell

If we plug the above 7 players into our list over the last 14 years we'd be in a far better position. Not to mention the fact they were able to pick those players up for cost far less than they were worth that allowed them to keep picks to top up with other talent over that period of time as well.

The beauty of us potentially having access to players like Robinson, Whan and Hart coming up if they turn out isn't just we have first rights to them it's that it allows us to trade for other players knowing we have a guaranteed talent walking in the door for less than it would cost for other teams.

Let's not create strawmen. "Miracle team" ain't the classification.

Media, pundits, or whomever... almost impossible to get now, but I'm sure there were generous odds for Sydney to make the GF... it would be few and far between outside of Swans fans putting anything substantial on Sydney making the GF before the season started.

The point is the team structure they got a roll on with had a young-ish profile. That can be more a lottery (and more susceptible to experienced side on the day) at the big occasion/stakes of a GF.

Except by the time we get access, the AFL will having us paying full price.

They still get a lot right, look at GC. Gifting players and high picks doesn't mean results will follow. I like the way Fremantle is trending but we haven't been a good organisation for the majority of our existence.

Even if we are still paying full price is it that much of an issue trading future picks away for the likes of Pickett or Warner when we know we have first rights on academy players? We just need to ensure we have enough points to match at what will still be at a discounted rate moving forwards with the upcoming changes.

Can someone explain to me the point of this St Kilda charade, why delist a bloke, pick him up again in the rookie draft last week and now he retires this week? How does it help them?

Moves part of his salary off the books as a rookie. Plus if he was just retired/delisted, the negotiated payout would have to have been included in this years salary cap.

I keep expecting them to announce the return to list sizes of 44 (38 main and 6 rookies) but I guess with Tas coming in a couple of years, they want those next 36 best players available in the lower leagues.
I've wanted them to do this for a while, but boost it to 46, before dropping back to 44 when Tas come in. Put development into players for the new club.

Additionally wouldn't be opposed to them returning to the old rookie rules, where the player has to upgraded to the main list to play more than a couple of games.

And add the ability to have 2x veteran spots, age and tenure at club. Still included in the cap, but not the total list list spots.
