When even in under 13s bush league you weren’t a good footballer unless you could use both feet and hands and it was trained accordingly

I think part of the reason the game has changed is the way good ball use is treasured now (or ball security as it's called in other forms of footy). Throwing it on your left when you're in trouble is a no-no and good players focus on using their strength and mobility to get themselves into a position to use their natural foot to advantage.

In considering how modern day players go about it, it occurred to me that two 2x Brownlow winners - Fyfe and Neale - have no real left side.

My argument is really simple. It appears really hard for guys drafted as midfielders to perform well in the forward line in their first few years when playing there.

Will Cooper Simpson disprove this theory? He might, but it doesn’t look promising so far.

You could make the argument that nobody has been played there, but I reckon they have. Even really high draft picks that play there (like Serong, Young and Brayshaw) did not perform well there in their first 5 years - when played there.

Like I said, Snuffy made the comment that Reid should be played in the forward line when he comes in. My only response was that might not be such a great idea. It is not an opinion that I have pulled out of my arse. It is an opinion based on evidence.

Serong & Young played forward this year in their 5th seasons to great affect. Multiple goals from both. If we decided to train them there I recon they would be amazing but it will be more beneficial to the team to leave them in the middle. The opposite of playing Pav in the middle for years.

Reid is a long shot to make it as a specialised forward pocket but he has the skills and production to make it as a half forward. This isn’t a big reach & covers a need. Bolton can do anything at an extremely high level so we can use him as a forward pocket till we trade in Pickett, Delean comes on or we recruit another next season.

I don't expect any player to make much of a difference on a HFF in their first year or two, regardless of where they played as a junior. It's a hard position to play well and certainly a hard position to get a lot of stats.

Given Callum's earlier rankings, the poor guy was probably expecting to be take in the top ten somewhere.

Even if I'm wrong though, he had to sit there and watch himself be passed over 16 consecutive times, including being repeatedly passed over by his favorite team.

The guy had been interviewed by multiple clubs, multiple times... Yet on the night, he sees so many of them decide other players are better.

Then Freo come along and grab him with their very first pick. Once he realised it was Freo that wanted him the most, and made him their highest priority, then he warmed to the idea of moving West pretty quickly.

I reckon his dad realized all this first though, and -- great man that he is -- he led the way emotionally for his son to embrace the idea he would be most valued here (he also turned his back on his traditional club in a heartbeat, all for his son. That's real love folks!)

And please reemember folks -- Reid is just 17/18 yo. Who the hell amongst us had a balanced and mature viewpoint about their dreams and opportunities at that age??? I certainly didn't!

The last Richmond supporter we drafted, that I'm aware of, went on to win two Brownlows in purple. A good omen perhaps?

1553 shanks. That's two whole seasons of 35 disposal games in which he hits zero targets and scored at least 105 dream team points.

Still won two Brownlows.

Reid making space through agility and taking the 15m kick for a "first down" each involvement will be more than enough to get him closely tagged. The guy averages mid twenties disposals, a 400m gained game is massive. Especially if we are dropping marks again.

Not sure about that, haven't followed the whole conversation.

To be fair, I don't expect much from any player in their first 2 seasons, even 3 or 4 depending on position. They are mostly their to learn and maybe contribute occasionally.
