WAFL form doesn’t correlate to AFL level. Don’t think Worner has ever shown anything that suggests he’ll be anymore then a fringe player at best. Definitely not enough to justify two contract extensions (one in 2022 and one in 2023) before he’d even made his debut. We’ve had a vacant wing since Acres left that he could have made his by now if he was good enough.

Not trying to knock Worner, but the only reason he’s still on an AFL list is because of the silly contracts we seem to give out willy nilly. Agree re Dockeroo that we need to be more ruthless in that regard.

He was going fine in Rd1 until he got knocked out.

I don't get the Carr pick.

Hamish Davis 190cm 18 years old had more runs on the board at WAFL seniors than 191cm Jaren Carr 20 years old.

What am I missing?

Don’t know but they have had a close relationship with Carr for a number of years, so know all about him and they planned the selection with his family ( knocking back Brisbane interest).

To me, it looks like Carr has always been painfully thin, too thin for even WAFL until this year. But his dad grew into his body at about this age and if he does the same we just might have a player.

His highlights are surprisingly good, just need a body to progress quickly.

A bit annoyed about Knobel but he’s a million miles from our best 23. If he had developed with us we could have got a 3rd rounder for him in a couple of years.

My dream is that Reid is a gun and zooms past Johnno and Ras in 2025/26.

Not convinced that Fyfe can play another season. Can he play as Sub to offer some second half grunt?

I’m thinking he is more likely to pass Cooper .

I think our draft makes perfect sense.
We already have more decent players than we can fit in our best .

Zero point in drafting small forwards if we don’t think they’re good enough. Makes more sense to stockpile potential blue chip we can develop to come through as we phase out the vets, especially with compromised drafts ahead.

I like all the picks we took. Some potential serious talent that can be properly developed for a couple of seasons.

The best teams (in most, if not all, sports, imo) who have sustained success over many years have a "best player available" mindset when it comes to the draft. A perfect example is my GB Packers. They had a hall of fame QB in Brett Favre who still had plenty in the tank and they go and draft some QB in the first round, which everyone thought was wasteful and unnecessary. This guy also turned out to be a Hall of Fame QB. When Rodgers was nearing the end of his career, they drafted another QB in the first round, which everyone thought was stupid and wasteful and unnecessary. This QB had the best second half of the season of any QB last year in the NFL and became the highest paid player off of that. Jordan Love is statistically unlikely to be our third HoF QB in a row, but he's damn good.

You draft the best player available. If he comes good, you play him. If you can't fit him into the team, you trade him and restock with the best player available. Drafting for need is exactly what the Chicago Bears do and they fu**** suck.

Agree with this.
It’s short term thinking to draft for immediate list needs, particularly early in the AFL draft. Picks after 40 it’s probably a bit different as you can usually obtain one of those easily enough if there’s a player you really like.

AFL lists change quickly with an average of 18-20% of the list turning over each year, around 7 to 8 players.
Tabs
Hughes
Knobel
Stanley
Emmett
Wilson
Corbett
Kuek

That’s 8 guys we have changed on our list since last year for example.

If Charlie Nicholl for example is a gun AFL level player that still cant get a game ahead of Treacy amiss and LJ, we can always trade him in 3 or 4 years for a first round pick and use it to draft someone else or trade in an actual list need like Bolton this year.
Reaching for a small forward that we didn’t rate at pick 34 that ends up delisted in 3 years time is a worse option.

While I agree with your sentiment, Nicholls was a list need as well after losing Tabs, Kuek and Corbett, then Jones going down with an LTI has left us very shallow in KPF stocks. I see Nicholls as the Treacy backup as he’s able to get up the ground, clunk a mark then turn and hit up a leading forward.

FF: Amiss > Voss
CHF: Treacy > Nicholls
F/R: Jackson > Jones/Riddle
R/F: Darcy > Reidy > Riddle

  • Knobel sounds like he is a couple of seasons away from being ready, and unlikely to have been ahead of Reidy.
  • unlikely he will get games at the Suns either.
  • pretty sure he has left on good terms.
  • if in a year or two Darcy is struggling, and we really want Knobel, go get him. He's sitting on the rookie list at the club that defines irrelevance.
  • in the meantime, I'm pretty interested to see what the Riddler can do.

Is he a lifetime DFA, as he was delisted?

-Happy to get Murphy Reid in, rated really high
-Had a function straight after the draft with him and his family, they're already looking at real estate to sort a rental
-We discussed with WCE (and alot of clubs) for trading before the night, had a few scenarios we were looking at, did speak with WCE on the night but as it became clearer who was available at both our picks we were both happy to sit and pick, after WCE did the deal with Port.
-Bo had a close association with us down at Peel, definitely a player we were looking at but Murphy we had also identified from a long way out to play a bunch of roles, particularly forward
-WCE didn't really throw a spanner in the works on our end, Port got the player they wanted, WCE must've been confident they would get Allan with the slide and we got our highest ranked player in Murphy Reid, We were thrilled, it worked out for all 3 clubs
-Knobel, a little bit of a surprise, surprise for Max as well, loved his time here, we knew it was a possibility to lose him, wish him all the best, been watching Riddle closely, improved out of sight. Walls spoke to Deledio throughout the process, it was a surprise for Brett too, Max did grow up and have significant connections in the GC.
-Can only take whats in the draft in any given year, thats why we targeted Bolton in trade period, feel Murphy can play forward and be creative like Bolton, have to keep topping up and trying to spread it but sometimes the draft dictates and you take best available, then trade for needs.

Really appreciate when people do this. Thanks heaps.

If that bolded part is true, very well played WC, once Richmond picked Faull we would have retracted our offer but they still managed to fleece pick 45 from Port.

Port never used that pick
Joe Berry (15), Jack Whitlock (33), Christian Moraes (38)

Personally I think Port did the very best out the draft in addressing needs and preferences when considering the picks they started with.

Got Berry, got Jack Whitlock which believing people like Twomey was genuinely being considered at their first pick (15/16) and then Moraes at 38 is a very good selection.

Whilst we likely withdrew any offers once Faull was selected Port downgraded their offer essentially to stop WC from from trading with another club. The cost for Port was a pick they never intended using. Fleecing isn’t a word that comes to mind.

So well done West Coast but also Pory did well moving up a spot for the cost of a pick they were never going to use. Freo sat back and got a player they rated higher on their board and were comfortable with either of Berry or Allan.

Without actually knowing I reckon Berry tops that list of 3 and I would have been happy to get him.

I am less convinced about Allan as a positional need than I am Reid. A forward/midfielder is a great addition.

I would have given up pick 30 to get Berry plus a pick in the 40's.

I just think he was a perfect fit for us. Time will tell, if that would have been the right call.

Cheers man.

Word on the street is that Robbie Gray, who has selection input at Port, was hot on Berry. Reckons he’s the best player he’s seen since Butters.

He would have been good but I reckon Bruce only slid because Richmond had too many holes to fill.

We’ve got the best of the players who left those holes and we have the Vic Metro MVP who has genuinely great game sense and composure. That shit cannot be coached.

The only acceptable nickname for a bloke named Reid is “Chopper” and I won’t entertain any arguments otherwise.
I was gonna say most of the boys wouldn't even know of him, then remembered they're currently naming him after a cricketer with a brief career in the early 90s 🤷‍♂️
