IF and that is a big if, we rates Reid above Berry the slide from 11 to 14 makes a bit more sense
Far too much "we all got what we wanted" for me to believe it all. Same as Carlton supposedly always having Smith the highest rated on their board all of a sudden. I'm happy to accept though that we had all three pretty similarly rated which is why we didn't push super hard for the WC pick.

Imo the most honest take about the draft came from Walls shortly after the trade. Basically that the draft was such that at pick 14, you'd still be able to get a player you would've heavily considered earlier anyways. In that vein, perhaps we anticipated, as the phantoms did, that a few key fwds would've been taken by our pick, giving us a choice btwn multiple targets.

In the rundown of the draft, Cal mentions that if all the players we liked were gone, we would've slid back. Until Richmond took Jonty Faull, guaranteeing that we were gonna get 1 of Reid, Berry or Allan, there was a risk of that happening.

We certainly got a stroke of luck with that selection.

we really need to send Richmond a fruit basket

Too much is being made of that I reckon. Carlton would have known who the top 2 were going to be so had Jagga the highest rated of the rest hence why he was the highest rated on their board.

Walls story seems fairly reasonable to me. Especially considering how many times they interviewed Reid, clearly he was a high target.

I wonder how confident clubs are that player a in the same range will be better than player b anyway - for all the analysis, drafting is still very hit and miss, even in sports where it would be easier to judge and much more resources like NFL, NBA etc.

It may be a stupid rule, but our team could have just not traded 10 & 11 in the first place, it was naive of them to think they could just trade back up with 14 & 30, no one was going to do that trade.
Agreed. I still think Richmond would of folded if we held firm on 11. In what world was 10 and 18 not a great deal.

A second round pick is generally the going rate for a 2-3 pick slide in the first round. We got pick 37-40 which is essentially end of second round.

We rated Reid highly and he definitely would have been at the front end of the queue for our original pick 11 (14).

It worked out fine in the end. I agree though that the trade should have held at 10 (12) and 18 (21). Jackson was 7 + 15 and change.

Why I’m comfortable with the expensive trades is that we have retained 3 second round picks across 2022/23 (Davies, Simpson, Murphy) plus NGA Josh Draper.

In 2024 ND held first round (Reid) and second round (Nicholls).

Where we stuffed up was letting Acres go for a bag of chips. He would been handy on the wing for the past couple of years.

Sounding like a real chance we get him next off season now.
If dees don't make it with their draw then they need to rebuild a bit tbh

Clarry, trac and gawn are getting older

If they realise the troubles then they will know

They've actually done a great job at building on the run, if they don't want to get into a dark pitch like 08 then they'll know to cut ties and move on

In reality they should make the finals with their draw, it's easy as piss tbh
