Geelong led for the first three quarters. They were keeping the lead warm for us...

I’m sure for every “lucky” win we get we lose a few

Good teams find a way

And we really should have lost to Geelong, swings and roundabouts.

...and really should have beaten GWS. I can live with letting GWS slip through our fingers, but the Fremantle loss was really an unnecessary choke. We gotta win games like that against such mediocre teams if we're gonna challenge at all.

Of course, the biggest and most inexplicable choke this season was Gold Coast, but even that could have been mitigated with a win against Fremantle. Freo was a just a really poor loss that could come back to haunt us later.

Yeah I get it and certainly not arguing with you, but seeing as this season has already exceeded my expectations, I'm not too worried about it. I still think we will play finals which will be brilliant for our young blokes.
If games like those happen next year, when I think we may be a contender, then I'll be getting a bit more annoyed, but for now I'm just enjoying the rollercoaster.

We need to win 5/11 games to probably make the finals and 6/11 games to definitely make the finals. Can we do it, of course, will we do it, I hope so.

Our double ups mean that the only top 8 sides we will face in the remaining 11 game are PA, WB and WCE. 8 games against teams not in the 8. Most of the other top 8 sides (already being top 8 sides last year exception Melbourne) will have their double ups against other top 8 sides. We therefore will have the easiest run home and should place us perfectly to at least score 7 more wins and reach 56 points. That will place us in the conversation for top 4.

If we don’t bottle games, and we probably will, we’d definitely finish top 4. Every team loses games they should win and we’re still pretty inexperienced.

Who thought we’d be close to a lock for finals at the halfway point of the season? If you asked any of us last year I don’t think many would have guessed that.

Huh, I would have!!

In hingsight

It probably balances out across the year.... but... I would love to go back in time and get Dawson to take that shot v GWS as well as replay the 3rd quarter Vs Freo. Cant help but think we left a few points on the table there

Win this weekend and I'm (reasonably) confident we'll make finals, lose and I'm a little dozbtful. Ball is in our court, hope we come out firing

Apart from West Coast, Essendon and GWS look the most likely. No one below them is good enough to challenge the 8. It will be between those 3.

essendon have taken a long road to get there but finally seem heading in the right direction, same as us ... i'm confident we're ahead of them generally, and certainly this season ... whether that delivers us to the finals remains to be seen but i rate our performances generally more consistently at a higher level than essendon's ... they may continue to improve dramatically, but i am optimistic we will too
i've had doubts on west coast from the start, emphasised by their defeat on the weekend ... they have ageing stars who might start to be even more exposed, but then i have doubts about geelong and port, too, i still think geelong seem to get lucky in games they're vulnerable, such as the weekend ... put them against any one of several 'middling to ordinary' teams and they'd have lost that, but collingwood seem utterly incapable of scoring
gws can beat almost anybody, but i still think their biggest problem is in the coach's box ... and if they're relying on mumford as their key ruck going into finals, i doubt they could win a premiership
i still think brisbane and richmond are the teams to beat, which we've done, and melbourne and dogs the obvious challengers (and we were a big shot at beating the demons) ...

I knew Essendon were better than their position when they played us. That was a tough game. I think they can definitely get in the 8, but probably only just. GWS always seem to have half their team out injured, but keep hanging around. WC is in a poor run of form, but are probably still favourites out of the 3. None of them looks like a major threat to us. We seem a good level above them all.

Who else can even get close to the finals? Fremantle seems very weak, Carlton plays no defence, and St Kilda keeps losing by a 100 points. GCS and Adelaide surely not.

The way it's looking now, we are 100% nailed on to play finals. It would be a massive disappointment if we somehow managed to miss out from here.

Essendon are perennial disappointments. 2017 they came with a rush, higher than expected. Everyone was excited for 18-20. Went nowhere. Expecting more of the same until they prove otherwise.

still not totally ruling out the suns ... with the talent there, if they manage to finally click they can beat a lot of sides ... as we know only too (painfully) well
but it's a very big if

We should have really beaten freo and gws

The last quarter of the dees game we should have taken our opportunity’s
I agree that we should have, but we didn't... but don't you think we're growing in experience and belief from week to week?

It's a really young team, that imo is learning from their errors... and improving week to week.

We're still getting games into a lot of our depth players, giving them a taste, an understanding of what's required...

We've debuted our new youngsters, rested them, and intend to bring them back in...

I believe we're playing finals this year, how far we go will give us a really good indication of where we're at in development.

But come finals time, anything can happen... to us and the other teams. Injuries, suspensions, stage fright... Luck plays a huge part.

What will be, will be... and nothing I can say will change it... but hot damn, I'll be thrilled to be in the finals again!!!!

I didn't see this before I posted... so sorry!

Cheer up! We're all good here... I know we're making you nervous, but we're talking a three-peat here, we're just talking about making the finals... Lol!

EDIT: That should read "...we're not talking a three-peat here..."

Stuff finals chat - this thread should be discussing top four.

The run home past the bye looks really juicy:

R15: Port (Adelaide)
R16: West Coast (SCG)
R17: Footscray (Melbourne - maybe?)
R18: GWS (Sydney)
R19: Freo (Home)
R20: Essendon (Melb)
R21: St Kilda (Melb)
R22: North (Melb)
R23: Suns (Home)

Thats only 2 top 8 sides in the last 9 weeks. Conservatively 5 wins, more confidently 6. Assuming a win over the Hawks this week, the Swans should be looking to finish with 14 or 15 wins. Thats absolutely top 4 territory.

Swans are 3 games clear of the teams placed 9-12. Three of those 4 teams have played the same number of games as Sydney. Only GWS has the game in hand. Top 8 is close to locked in other than a shuffling of places. This the thread may not be the biggest kiss of death.
