AFL Grand Final Grand Final Jinx: What Fan Habits Keep Costing Us the Win?

I got custom number plates 12SWAN on my car around 2019. 12 to represent 2012 premiership. We are now stuck having the 2012 premiership as our latest one despite 4 attempts.

I am now getting rid of the number plates and having custom ones nothing to do with the swans because the number plate is cursed

I’ve been waiting for this thread lol

My mate’s wife, who I don’t get along with, is responsible for our losses. From 2014 onwards she has attended every Swans GF. I actually discussed this with my mate earlier in the year and he vowed she wouldn’t be attending.

I wasn’t sitting with my mate at the GF last week but when I found out she actually attended I was raging. The tragedy is she isn’t a swans supporter!

Have seen the glorious 2005 & 2012 wins with my mate who was single at the time, so the theory checks out

Who is supplying this cursed non-Swans fan the tickets? You need to find out and nip it at the source.
If it’s your mate tell him to quit it!

Okay it's time to fess up - it really was all my fault 😭

Last year when I was in Japan, we visited a Shinto temple and the idea is that you purchase a lucky charm and make a wish and keep that charm with you always.
Well no prize for guessing what my wish was and I tied the charm to my favourite handbag. That bag and I are usually inseparable and it came to every game, bar one - the dishlickers game, so I was pretty happy with my work!
Fast forward to the GF and I made the big call - don't take the handbag, with my reasoning being that it will get in my way when I'm crazily celebrating after the game.....

So there you go guys, I'm soooooooo sorry 😔
I'm not one to point fingers, but I'm pointing one in your direction here. Surely you could have put the charm in your pocket.

That said, don't let this game define you. Get back in the ring, with charm in pocket, and help us win a gf.

It’s been one week since the Swans lost the grand final. It’s time to shift the blame where it truly belongs: on us, the fans!

Share your ridiculous superstitions and unfortunate rituals that might have jinxed our team. Did you wear those blue socks again? Did you travel solo but only win when going with a friend? Do they only win when you watch on TV and not when you attend in person?

Let’s place the blame squarely on us, the fans, and don’t take it too hard on yourself because this game won’t define us
This is a great thread Sid, great timing too.
It's good to read I'm not the only crazy numptie on here and to have a laugh at all our crazy superstitions 🤣

I drank water after every goal just as the ball hit the ground from the umps bounce.

I clapped each goal 8 times .

I wore my lucky underpants , I wore my lucky guernsey .

I did wear shorts which i don't normally do but I had done at the crows game.

I don't know what else I could have done.

I knew I should have chosen someone else... sorry mate.
Now that I think about it a bit more, 2024 rests solely with Mister B . I missed out as a P2 in the ballot and was ready to cancel my flights. Mister B went above and beyond (showing exceptional kindness) and helped me with a ticket.

If only I had cancelled my flights, we would have won. Please direct all your frustrations towards MisterB

Also, my superstitions run one week at a time.

So I wore exactly what I was wearing at the pub whilst watching us best port in the PF to the GF.

Only difference was I enjoyed myself a bit too much after the PF that I lost my socks and couldn’t wear the exact same pair..

So the loss is on me team, my deepest apologies

There's a long standing tradition in my family where we wait until the first swans goal until having our first beer/drink.

I got so excited after our first goal that I only remembered to have a drink for our second goal.

So I blame myself.
You would have almost died of thirst during the Port Adelaide home and away game.

I can't remember who performed in 2005. In 2012 it was Paul Kelly and Temper Trap wasn't it?

Pre Game was Paul Kelly and Tim Rogers?

temper trap half time?

I did what I could to not jinx us.

In 2012 I worked along the Yarra River, and during the week (including GF week) if I saw a swan we won the game that week. If I didn't see a swan we lost. This year during GF week I went to the Swanshop pop-up store at the Melbourne Office and I saw lots of swans so I was excited. Nope it didn't work this year ☹.

At the pop-up store I purchased the 150 year scarf. For 2014, 2016 and 2022 GF I wore my 2012 Premiership scarf. So I said no way I'm wearing that scarf again at the GF and I wore the 150 year scarf instead. It didn't help either ☹.

2014 GF day I recorded all the shows on Foxtel and Channel 7 so I could watch after we won. When we didn't win I said that I jinxed us by recording them. Since that day I haven't recorded anything (except after the game has finished). My brother pointed out to me during this year that even though I didn't record the 2016 and 2022 GF we still lost. It's true but I still won't do it!

A simple drink and I would be drunk with happiness right now.

Whilst you got many things right during the season ( I bet you didn't miss against Port) you need to address your shortcomings during the most important game of the year. It's all about preparation, which may or may not include treating the gf like a normal game, such as round 4 match vs the Eagles.

In saying that, don't let this game define you, just make sure you drink after the first swans goal next gf.
