Rumour GFC 2025 Player Trading, Drafting FA, Rumours and Wish lists Pt 1

I have it on good authority that Butters is being looked at and that its not just a 1 way street - much like Rowell with GCS its a wait and see on 2025 performance etc......

With that said, the GFC look at about 15 options each year and often get good vibes coming back but clearly many fall off for a variety of reasons.

You mean Kelly or like last year with Baker etc.

Do you think they pulled the right lever drafting Reid? Probably could have gotten a swag of picks if they had traded it.

This seems a very strange state of affairs for WC. Would this be the worst they have been since 1987.. id have thought.

Can't have a go at the for the Kelly trade too much, even if Geelong extracted the maximum cost for him. Lot of clubs near the top end do that Bryce Gibbs trade to try and extend their run only for it to be an anchor on their list of the next 5 to 7 years.
Clubs have to pay overs and either misread their target (wrong type of player or not that good enough) or misread their list (not good enough to go to the next level, or not enough staying power)

It was their involvement in the JHF trade is what bothers me, in addition to their trade for Baker (which is such a pointless trade, there is zero point in bringing performance forward). They should have a group of three top three picks to build a core around. Imagine if they had Sheezel a year before Reid, and someone else a year later.

Their trade for Barrass was poor as well, that Carlton trade to Hawthorn only happened to enable the Baker trade. Their left hand robbed their right hand by facilitating it. Though this would have been harder to tell at the time. Once they realised what Carlton and Hawthorn were planning they should have shut it down. They had to complete the Barrass trade before anything else. North couldn't give away their future 1st which will probably be a top 5 pick, Hawthorn are looking like they're expected to be top 8 this year. There is a scenario where WCE holds onto pick three trades Barrass for pick 14 and a future 2nd, then flips 14 to North for their future 1st and possible change.

Owies was OOC he had to be a DFA on a minimal contract, Carlton were throwing him out. Including him in any discussions was a sign of incompetency

Honestly... This Butters rumour coming to Geelong.. I call it's bull 💩
( I'm not saying you started it ) but who ever did, I call bull 💩

I've heard from a ITK mate that it's definitely an option.
I never started it but my mate was adamant that it's "in play" to use his words.

I would love to see Chris Scott and Patrick Dangerfield head off to Adelaide for an in person chat with Zak.

Hopefully another Channel 9 sports reporter busts then at the airport a la Travis Boak.

The melts across the board, not just the Port supporters, would be epic.

I honestly don't know what a trade for Butters could look like. I mean they could send us a future 2nd with a future 3rd back their way. But seriously a draft wipe out and future 1st wouldn't get it done.

That's why i'd go after Rowell, he's out of contract end of 2025.
That gives the team that he says he wants to play for the power to go, "Well he's out of contract so you don't hold the chips here"

I reckon Rowell's agent would be in his ear going, "Mate you're a deadset gun but this rabble is never gonna get you to the level you deserve"
Guess it depends if he'd rather go for biggest earnings possible or if he values success more.

Neither is the wrong move, you just don't want to be regretting it after the fact for picking one or the other.

It depends - there are a number of clubs where he would be a very good shot of both.

Rowell would be an excellent fit at the Dogs, and they do have the cash. They need another inside mid with Dunkley and Smith gone, and the Naughton/Darcy/English combo has them sorted for key talls forward of the ball for the next five years at least.

Unfortunately for Port if they think he’s gone in FA then it’s in their best interest to trade him end of this season. Other teams could offer much more than us though, so if he’s happy to go anywhere we have no chance

Did Richo play wing? Didn't know that
Don't know why they moved him there, but he had a wild season there and one of his best ever. And when people do remember it, they think it was back around late 90s/early 2000s.

It was 2008.
He was equal third in the Brownlow the year a pretty average Cooney stole it off Gablett, and Richo was only 2 votes behind Cooney.
He was on the bench in the AA team but should have been on a wing, kicked 48.30 so really should have had about 55-60 goals from 20 games.
Statistically it was just about his best year as an AFL footballer (looked it up, he kicked 91 goals in 1996 thats his best goal kicking season), and would retire mid 2009.

Was an absolutely mental and he was 33 that season.

Could absolutely see Cameron replicating that, with the exception of the Brownlow numbers because I imagine Cameron on the wing could kick 100 goals and lead Geelong to an undefeated season and we would still hear "3 votes Cripps" or "3 votes Naicos" come Brownlow night.

Genuine question here which i asked sort of the same question yesterday but i'll drop it in to see what we as a collective think

If you could take it as it is and guarantee that the oppo clubs accepts it.
What would you do in order of priority of what we need? You can only pick 1 player.

And this is with the intention that every single player listed is actually wanting to get to the Cats.

Go ahead Cats gang!

Matt RowellCats pay up 2-3 x First Round Picks
JUHCats pay up 1-2 x First Round Picks
Zak ButtersCats pay up 2-3 x First Round Picks
Aaron CadmanCats pay up 1-2 x First Round Picks

Need to be more specific with the draft picks.

is it 2 or 3?
is it 1 or 2?

It makes a difference.

P.S. There's no chance in the world we get a sniff at Cadman who was a #1 pick young key forward for 1 our of first-rounders that could end up a pick in the 20's.

Why would Geelong not have interest in Butters is probably more the point. He’s a deadset gun. He grew up in Baccus Marsh so maybe interested. We’d be negligent not to enquire. Doesn’t mean it will happen.
There will be 17 clubs asking the question, to be fair.

It will be an issue for the two years we have Cameron
I have to disagree with you on this. We could easily fit them both in for 2 years if we wanted to.

Fitting JUH in is not the issue I see. It's spending a lot of capital (even at a discounted rate after this season) on a forward when I think our midfield is still a bigger priority.

If we're in win now mode, is that the best value. There is a cost in over investing in an area.

Not quite sure what is our area of need is right now, even where we are weak in an area we still have someone worthwhile in the spot. For someone to be worth chasing at this point they'd have to be pretty blue chip
Absolutely. that's why my last sentence was 'That's not to say we should chase him'.

I was just stating that we could easily fit him into our side for the next 2 seasons, and in the longer term. Fitting him in is not the issue. It's whether we should spend decent money and first round picks (of which JUH would cost both) on him.
