Particularly the "I told you so" calls too. It's about fairness.

Clubs probably have about six players they like around their pick. Four will probably be available, and of those four, two might make it.

Even with all the resources they have, that's generally how it seems to go. It's still a raffle.

A classic example is 2019. I was never a Cooper Stephens guy, and I wanted Georgiades, Rivers, or Robertson instead.

Although I got one right, I can't then turn around and have a go at the club either, because I got one terribly wrong, and the other guy is a role player.

It's the same here. Those who didn't want Clark - that's all good - but when your suggestions at the time were Phillipou, Ginbey, and Ed Allen, and only one of those looks like a much better idea, can you really say "I told you so"? - Probably not.

The reality seems we just missed out on the real cream of the crop. Literally by one pick with Mackenzie.

It's disappointing, but it happens.
If anyone needs a lesson in being patient on a young mids prospects. Look up Jye Caldwells career stats. Five years of yeah maybe one day, year six (last year) showed real improvement, now this year, his seventh he looks a quality A grade level midfielder (just did hammy which is unfortunate).

Why not add Sam Mitchell and Matt Priddis, these guys were not even good enough for the AFL at the same age but managed to win Flags and Brownlow medals

Yeah they were late maturers, they will always occur. Caldwell was a high pick who took a while to come on. You are 100% correct though.

We are certain Rowell won't leave GC?
Hard to get him out imo
I find it very bizarre that Rowell would want to leave Gold Coast. As much i hope I'm wrong, but I think Gold Coast is closer to a flag then Geelong is. But this is because the AFL has helped them to do this with draft picks and especially Academy Picks...

I think it's a very big list gap but end of year i think it'll be our only gap.

Could you imagine us with Oliver?
I can only see Oliver coming to Geelong now is if Melbourne will finish bottom 5 or so. And for both parties of Melbourne and Oliver can come to an agreement think Oliver won't be in the next time of them challenging for a flag and they can get a good decent pick and they can wipe of his salary to another club..
So for us to get Oliver let's hope Melbourne finishes as close to the bottom as possible 🙏

I reckon I tongue and cheeked it at the time that we might have lost that trade after taking Clark.

Rough draft that one.

We’ve gone early and failed on a bunch of Geelong Falcon kids with R1 selections, hopefully Clark can come good down the track.

We do have form in this department.

Darcy Lang
Billy Smedts
Cooper Stephens
Jhye Clark
I know that technically the first three are R1 picks, but it is nothing like burning a top ten or five.

I can certainly see then going bottom 5 so we're off to a ripping start

Not always about flags though. Even when GWS were contending, Vic players still wanted out.

I don't want Oliver. Already got a few players with 'mental health' problems
I can definitely understand the position and there's risk there, but I think the form of the risk will have changed substantially in the last 12 months. Not to get too diagnostic from a couch half a country away, but his issues look to have stabilised.

If there's instability to manage then the development coaches will be too busy to desk with that and definitely leave him at Melbourne. If he's stabilised and found his equilibrium it could be worthwhile

For what ? Our Fr1 last year would have gotten us him playing for us this year. I was Ok with that …. but at years end we will know what pick it is ..and if its low ..I don't want to trade it for a player who turns 29 in 2026 … not if we are taking all of his money and contract.

Agreed, and it's not the fact that he has various issues - it's the fact that it manifests in ways that put his teammates offside.

Depression or a pill habit is something I can more than live with in an AFL footballer, it's different to being a dickhead or an arseh*le.

I’d love Oliver.

Not my first preference but if it’s nobody or Oliver… I’ll take Oliver every time.

We will get a good look at what he can do against our inside mids this week.

I think if he gives our boys a whooping a few people will start to get very interested in him.
Those going to the ground should observe his defensive running and spread from the contest in particular. Oliver knows how to rack them up still, but his disposal makes Macrae's look like peak Ablett. The scoring impact he makes from stoppage and around the ground, in comparison to his opponents - that's what I'd like stats on.

Someone like Ollie Wines is a more effective midfielder than Oliver currently, even if accumulation stats favour the latter.

Nah i don't think it would cost a lot of picks, just salary cap. Not the second time around.

Yeah maybe i should watch him a bit more before coming to a conclusion

If we had oliver or if we had rowell right now bith st kilda and brisbane results would be reversed and we sit 3-0.
