Not much to the GC as they don't really have list space for a lot of involvement in this trade period in terms of bringing in players
It may suit GC to lose a player or two from its full list. As we have a good trading relationship with GC, are there any midfielders we would be interested in that potentially we could get for not too much? Particularly the Vics.

Just hypothetical.... what is Sav worth to another club? Say gold coast?:think:

He is worth more to us for the next 2-3 even 4 years than a pick in the 30's this year.
Even taking the young Falcon ruckman Toby Conway, we wouldn't see any sort of dividend for about 3 years at least IMO.

Ratagolea would be worth about pick 30 imo

If we got pick 30 I'd seriously think about doing that deal.

I genuinely like the big fella, but just have a sneaking suspicion that he won't reach the heights that many in here are hoping. Just purely in terms of our list profile - right now I think some leg speed and youthful run through our midfield is our missing piece. Hawkins has 1-2 years / and we have Cameron. Neale and SDK as a developing tall players behind them. In ruck terms - Stanley is ahead of Esava and likely to be for the short term - then we have Neale / The Greek in development roles.

Another way to look at it - can we contend without Esava in the next 1-2 years? Yes
Can we contend without changing our midfield mix in the next 1-2 years? No

All well and good to talk about changing the game plan - but you need the right mix of players to do it.

Brodie is the one-they are trying to trade him for a nothing pick but thats because he is on 400k and they want to free up a list spot. Most of their fringe players wouldnt interest me.

Fort going allows Neale and Tsap to actually play in the Ruck at VFL level, if we want these guys to develop we are going to have to actually play them in the role at some point and take the risk of not having great cover in the short term for mine.

If Fort goes, I think they will add another ruck in some form. Neale, Tsap and SDek are not certainties to be future rucks, or even on Geelongs list. Whether draft or trade, whether a more traditional ruck or one in system, not sure. Stanley for another two does give those players time to show what they have. All players the last two years could feel hard done by trying to show their worth at the lower level.

Barring injury, I think Stanley has two very solid years ahead as our #1 ruckman. And it's up to the younger blokes coming through to bang the door down and force the selectors to pick them. I think Stanley's ruck craft has improved and he has a few tricks (athletic and aerobic ability) that others don't have. And he just strikes me as a bloke who has taken a long time (too long) to work it all out and understand what's required.

He was drafted from St Kilda where he's been played primarily as CHF or CHB - hardly played ruck there at all.

And most importantly - he's not the reason Geelong have fallen over in finals the past few years.

With GC’s regular access to talent, I would think there must be some first/second round players who have not flourished there and could do well with a fresh start. As GC keep losing, they are obviously not getting the best out of a lot of their squad.

Stanley at his best is as good as anyone. His issue is just sustainable performance but for where I feel we are, as a team now, and considering the club has signed him to two years, I would prefer to draft in or trade for almost an unused young players on the verge of playing, guys who can still wait a year or two. If one is not avilable then I think we will add someone thru draft.

I feel Ladhams type would want to be #1, and Im not sure if he is better than Stanley. I believe single role players look at who is in front of them before they move clubs.

On top of that, its seems obvious to me that all our time now must be put towards mids. Our height issues are secondary, we have someone on our list that could be selected to play most roles..all be it still developing. We are boxed in for the next 12 months, at which time I hope we will see a huge turn over.

I see Esava as predominantly a tall forward able to ruck rather than the other way round. I see Neale in a similar vein. I think the Esava is probably expendable IF we hold onto Fort. I'm not sure we can lose both - it would leave us very thin for rucks of any description.

As for pick 30 - seems about right. A future 2nd pick probably more useful to us with so many retirements likely next year.

I agree..dek probably needs to play back given hendo age and kreuger going..stanley is sbout to be 31, neale has a lot of physical development to go and tsap is unknown. I cant see us trading fort out unless we trade another ruck in.

I'm not sure they'd do all that well with a fresh start. Someone like Brodie, for example, is five years in and only managed four senior games this year.

Would prefer to go to draft with multiple picks for mids, rather than banking on him finding something six years into his career. And it appears that plenty of other clubs also don't see all that much in him, given the apparent lack of interest in a player the Suns have shown ambivalence about in the past.

Bit of chat about Constable perhaps being in discussions with Freo as part of what they're trying to do with Clark. Not sure how or why, as he's uncontracted (unless clubs can still involve uncontracted players in other deals).

With Cerra going, Constable might have a better chance of midfield time (and games) at Freo - not sure. But he is best mates from school and draft years with Brayshaw, and I'm sure that is a factor.
He'd likely be a DFA so don't think it changes much tbh

Wow. Pick 30? For players drafted between picks 25-35 in years 2007-2016 (i.e. players in the system for at least five years), the average games played is just 76. Almost half (46/108) were delisted without reaching 50 games. About one quarter (27/108) played 10 games or less.

Sav is a 23-year old forward/ruck with 55 games under his belt. He's one of the most naturally freakish players on our list, pick 30 is an insult. People need to stop overrating draft picks.

A lot of talk about getting THOSE Top 5 or even Top 10 picks to set yourselves up for the future.
Last night i watched the game with a mate of mine who's a BIG Saints supporter.
Every time BONT touched the ball he yelled "...and We took Billings!!"
Every time PETRACCA touched the ball he yelled "...and We took McCartin!!"
Every time Naughton touched the ball he yelled Yep u guessed it "...and We took Coffield!!"
Beware what you ask for.
As those high picks could turn into another decade of what if's, should've, could've & would've.
Cheers Boys.

I think we see this issue differently, while I agree that clubs and their supporters do exactly as you say. Thre are some that still debate Grundy on here. I heard some Saints supporter saying as much on TR yesterday that they should have had Petricca.

My position is simply that every year, every draft top 10 draft picks have some more successful outcomes than others, and some years are stronger than others. We might be lucky enough to somehow get a top ten pick, and draft a McCartin or a Paddy Dow or someone like Dylan Stephens who is still a jury out. It just means that one or two picks probably will not deliver what you hope.

My point is only that I see no other way to be a ultimately successful club because history shows us every year that the Premiership side have single figure drafted players they have drafted and developed. Sometimes like with Melb, they have multiples of them. So while its no certain way to win, as Gold Coast and GWS and a heap of others have shown, is there any evidence there is another way to win. We failed trying to do it. Once Selwood goes our last drafted single figure pick will be gone. In truth he is well past that value anyway.

Will still be genuinely surprised if Charlie gets to 25 senior games (here or elsewhere) before his race is run. If the VFL numbers were as compelling as some here like to suggest, other clubs would be all over him like a rash.

As it is, I think modern footy at the elite level is just not his go. When someone like Dunstan is out the door at the Saints (and apparently attracting little interest elsewhere), I don't see why Chooka would be a really attractive proposition for teams to contemplate.

I hope we do Pure. He is not a serious option or we would have used him. While I dd not mind the iea of drafting a mature from the state league, the successful example like Pods and Stewart seem to play immediately. We drafted a mid 20's player and then spent 3 years that could have gone into a younger player with more upside.

Jon Ralph said a few weeks ago no one was interested in getting Chook and he'll stay at Geelong. Kingy tweeted today there might be some interest but not much. All the clubs are in a salary cap squeeze at the moment so fringe players like Chook are low on the priority list. The squeeze is due to the reduction in the salary cap as part of the covid response from the AFL.

Only reason I can see for us giving Constable a contract at this point is if we'd rather have him on a one year contract than a late draft pick on a two year contract. Unless he's shown improvement in his running behind closed doors.

You're in dream land if you think hes worth any more than that.

Hehe... He is worth more to us than a pick in the 30's at this point in time.
He can contribute in 2 areas (Ruck & Forward) from the get go... from round 1 2022.
And actually play. Whilst some think he can't i'll beg to differ.
He gives us options that a 18yo kid cannot in 2022 & 2023 TBH.
A Pick 35, i would be surprised would be able to contribute as a Ruckman or as a KPF in 2022/23 or even 2024.
So we are not in dream land if we think he is worth more than a pick in the 30's.
Luckily for us he is not even on the table for trade,

My issue with Esava is he can't kick for goal. He's either a long term ruck or a very frustrating forward.

His kicking can improve?? Yes??
If thats all that is holding him back... then some one on one coaching can fix. Yes?
Frustrating forwards i can live with.
We have had plenty.
Some have to go back to Tom Hawkins' first 3-4 years. Talk about frustrating and he grew up with a footy in his hands and was a consensus Number 1 pick.
