not that they're the barometer but curnow(pick 10) & mckay(pick 12) were both drafted in 2015 and it took curnow til 2022 and mckay til 2021 to be >2 goals a game fwds (curnow only played 4 games in 2021 so there's every chance he could've made the step at the same time as harry). so our key fwds are potentially 5-7 years off being "difference makers", but obviously players progress at different rates so it's not a guarantee. that's if 2 of them do turn out to be stars which there's a chance that doesn't happen. plus we'd need the umpires to have a change of heart towards our players...

For me it's the following.

1. Ask Yze when he truly believes the club can play finals again and how he sees us achieving that goal. He might mention in the media as part of PR that we're hoping to play finals this year, but it would be an incredible turn around to go from 2 wins to 14+ in 1 summer with the upheaval we've gone through this off season.

2. Give him the off field support that best allows him to implement the game plan and structures that he wants us to play with. We've brought back Caracella, promoted Morris & upgraded our fitness boss. That's a solid start to turning things around, but we can't rest on that. We should be investigating every possible angle to get the best support around Yze as possible.

3. Give him assurances that he'll have the full amount of time to implement those plans and not get spooked by outside noise and demands. We all remember Gale giving his blueprint back in 2010 and then the whole club buying in. Even in 2016 when things went pear shaped, the club stood by Hardwick and with some slight adjustments turned into the powerhouse we became. No need to change that approach this time, unless things went horribly wrong.

4. Once the plan is in place stick to it and don't go chasing short term results to ease pressure from impatient supporters/media. As above put the plan in place and then stick to the process regardless of the outside noise, especially from the media, which then fuels the fan pressure.

5. Continual improvement across the playing group. Wins & losses shouldn't come into it for the next 2 seasons as far as I'm concerned, especially if we're looking to develop 3/4 of the next premiership side given we have 31 players with under 50 games on our list heading into 2025. I've seen a lot of best 23s with most/all 8 draftees being starters. Probably a good idea to ease up on the expectations that all 8 will become best 23 players in 2025. IMO we'll likely see no more than 5 of them debut this year, Smillie and Lalor hopefully get their shot early on, Hotton probably 2nd half of the year and probably see 2 of the KPPs getting a gig as the year unfolds if form warrants.

6. Big picture focus. It will be very easy to get caught up in the hype if we were to start the season with promising performances, maybe even winning the odd game nobody expects and start to think that we can do a Collingwood or GWS and go from bottom of the pile to contenders in a season, but more often than not that doesn't happen. If that happens I hope we don't take our eyes off the long term goals, which for me is repeating something similar to 2017-2020 in the latter part of this decade/early part of the 2030s.

IMO we're a bottom 2 certainty in 2025 and still bottom 6 in 2026. From 2027 I expect us to be knocking on the door of the 8.

Just stand outside AFL head quarters with a Richmond scarf on pants down, ass up

Guaranteed to get ****ed

Like you, neither worried nor have a clue about how many games we win next season. It's all about the C word - competitive! Not making up numbers, but counting the number of times we win contests throughout every game. It will be a contest to contest season and as that ratio improves, start thinking finals again for the experience.

Richmond had to play 3 seasons making the 8, then we didn't, before being premiership material. For history to repeat, that places us at least 6-7 years away. We've drafted better, perhaps, but we lost talent and experience to do it. Not sure that guarantees a better bounce.
And in 2017 our stars were 25 years old plus. Which means the new recruits will have 7 years plus until their peak. People saying we will win a flag in 2 or 3 years are absolutely dreaming.

Any coach of any team with any credibility at all will sell the possibilities to the playing group or they may as well get an AI screen to coach them. Every team has to have finals as their ambition, else why play at the elite level. Fun is not enough at that level, credibility isn't either. It's wins, progress and the intention to play finals until it is mathematically no longer possible. It's not negotiable, until it has to be!

You always have the aim to play finals, but you can't be ignorant to the current situation regarding the position of the list.

Which is why I suggested Yze presents to the board and gives them a clear picture of where he truly expects the club to be ladder wise, at least then everyone is on the same page iinternally and it removes any pressure for results and allows the focus to be where it should be and that is the development of the players and game plan that will take us to the finals and beyond.
