Said it in the WAFl thread, but I don't understand why we don't draft mature-age guys in ruck positions. Unless you are Naitanui, almost every ruckman takes a few years to develop and so many young prospects turn out to be a bust. Barnett was probably the highest rated ruck prospect in his draft year, but has shown almost nothing. By contrast, you take a guy that's been in the WAFL/VFL system for a couple of years, has spent more time working on their ruck craft and has a bigger, better developed body.... you can be a bit more confident that they'll at least be a contributor because you've seen them play against men. And they'll invariably be cheap, because you can probably get them as a rookie.

Can Rookie-listed players be traded while they are in contract?

Was having a look at GWS ruckman Nick Madden... huge hulking lad, 204cm and 112kg, 20 turning 21 in May.

Averaging 20 disposals and 33 hitouts through the first 3 VFL games this year, and also 8 clearances a game. He's playing his 4th game right now and has 13 touches, 22 hitouts and 7 clearances at 3-quarter time.

But he's a Cat-B rookie and contracted until the end of 2026... which I think means there's no avenue to poach him this off-season.

Nic Nat was destroying teams on his own CDT does not.

They can be traded but the club bringing them in has to put them on the senior list.

Wouldn't say Flynn is the answer after 1 decent game.
He is a solid 2nd ruck and if he turns out to be better than that after a full season, great.
No, a fit Flynn is better than a solid 2nd ruck option, and as he said in his last presser, "I'm far from the finished product".
These are his career stats by comparison to BW, Xerri, Cameron and Marshall, the last 3 I'd be happy with as our No 1 ruckman.
Remarkably, MF leads them all for HOs to advantage and is equal with Xerri for %HOs won. He is the only one that is "elite" for %HO to advantage.
If you go back to 2023 when he played the first 9 games, ie: had a decent run at it and was match fit, his stats were significantly better than the career stats here.
This link will take you to AFL Tables where you can see his year by year, game by game stats

Great hitout for the AFL Academy boys

Our NGA guys in Walley and Evans were both impressive

Currently my top 5 board for us specifically would be

1. Sharp
2. Lindsay
3. Grlj
4. Duursma
5. CDT

If we can get all of the first 3, I’d be over the moon.

Good list and just how freaken good is Lindsay, he was so impactful today, the perfect modern day distributor off a wing or halfback, he is so clean skilled and one touch, he could play today at AFL, his speed and foot skills are so impressive, when the balls in his hands - good things happen.

I thought Sharp had a much better game than a fortnight ago

Also agree, that both Evans and Walley had good games.

Should have been signed on last rookie draft if we wanted him. Think doing it now is a bad look with Hall in the WAFL

Trained with the Bulldogs and we went with Henderson

Henderson being poached so late didn't leave us enough time to get him over to look at him

Can still get him across IMO
Giving Hall and co more mature support in the midfield is a good thing, eases the pressure on them to carry the team

I'm fine with Jamieson as a pick, we wanted a ruck so we took one real late. The mistake we have made is to hold on far too long. (especially considering he was an overager playing colts at the time of being drafted)

Barnett was picked at the top of his range but once again it was an OK pick in a shallow draft with other clubs sniffing around too. I still think this year or next you'll see massive gains. If not move on.

Agree with all this. Rucks need time but there needs to be some progression which we haven’t seen with either of those players.
Looking back that 2022 draft was very shallow, I think we were hoping Darcy Jones would get through to our pick, but giants pipped us

I think its rich to think we would take a proven performer.
Not big and athletic enough🙄

If we’re going down the mature mid path he’d be my choice. Leaning towards best overager or KPD though.
I with you mate but sometimes you need to reward the player who just keeps finding the footy in the twos.

Also was it you who said there was a possible 2nd mid season draft pick coming available?

At the end of the day it’s the MSD, we really should just select the best available if we’re playing the percentages. A team like Essendon that is a Todd Goldstein hamstring away from ruck oblivion probably needs to hone in on a Crossley or Keogh.

Much earlier in the year an extra pick was a distinct possibility but it won’t happen now, which is a good thing.

A part of me thinks lets just get this over and done with and give Ned Moyle a 7 year 7 mill deal or something insane.
And then give Gold Coast something insane in a trade?
