Go look at the list of any other team and they have double that number of "mids" on the list. We lack quantity and quality. Another one at the msd essential.
I agree we need more mids esp for depth but the first four I mentioned are/will be quality if they can stay on the park and at the club.
When you look at the Dorkers ; it’s Brayshaw Young and Serong.
Melbourne is Petracca,Oliver and Viney.
Yes they have a support cast but generally two or three guns.Reid,Hewy and Gross I believe will be that three.
If you have 4-6 gun mids you are then faced with the problem of shoehorning them into the forward line or them leaving chasing more game time, money and recognition.
Great problem to have I suppose.
Another mid sure but our looming problem is a KPD.
They take longer to develop or do we buy one?

If we could end up with evans and cole that would be elite, just give a few of the senior boys the old yeller treatment

WC need another 2 elite mids through the draft and 1 KPD this year or next through the draft.
We probably should buy 1 also who is playing or ready to play.

Didn't realise Burgeil and Barnett were taken in the 20s. **** me.

Thank goodness Ginbey has found a spot on a HBF and Hewett played a good half last week otherwise we'd be proper ****ed.
Picking a ruckman if you can even call Barnett that now in the top 25 that was never a Nic Nat, Jackson or Grundy level talent was always proper dumb.

I’m not rushing to defend our club but the talent pool just wasn’t there in that draft. It’s not like there are heaps of options that were taken after Barnett and Burgiel that are tearing it apart at AFL level.

They have both been proper busts though which doesn’t help.

In hindsight sure, but he was being compared to Grundy at draft time.

Long is probably the best player after round 1, so it's not like we made a big blunder.

So a caveat to this entire post… all of this is all based on raw stat reading and not actually watching/scouting the players on the field. But I thought it was interesting to benchmark the performance of a few of our KPD targets in the State Leagues to see if there were any comparable players who would theoretically be much cheaper or easier to obtain.

I’ll start with our very own Sandy Brock as a point of reference.

Sandy Brock – 22 years old, 198cm
2024 VFL: 18 games, 10.3 disposals, 4.3 marks, 0.9 tackles, 45.6 fantasy score
2025 WAFL: 1 game, 14 disposals, 4 marks, 3 tackles

As compared to some targets discussed in this thread.

Zach Reid – 23 years old, 200cm (Essendon)
2024 VFL: 4 games, 17.3 disposals, 6.8 marks, 1.5 tackles, 70.5 fantasy score (Not much of a sample size)

Jedd Busslinger – 21 years old, 198cm (Bulldogs)
2024 VFL: 19 games, 20.6 disposals, 7.8 marks, 1.1 tackles, 82.8 fantasy score
2025 VFL: 3 games, 25.3 disposals, 7.7 marks, 1.7 tackles

Jacob Blight – 23 years old, 196cm (Richmond)
2024 WAFL: 7 games, 18.4 disposals, 8.7 marks, 1.0 tackles
2024 VFL: 7 games, 19.1 disposals, 6.9 marks, 1.6 tackles, 77.6 fantasy score
2025 VFL: 2 games, 13.5 disposals, 6 marks, 2 tackles

Some much cheaper players who may be flying under the radar:

Wade Derksen – 23 years old, 194cm (the Giants website lists him at 197cm)
2024 VFL: 17 games, 19.4 disposals, 6.9 marks, 1.6 tackles, 80.0 fantasy score
2025 VFL: 3 games, 21.7 disposals, 7.3 marks, 0.0 tackles, 81.3 fantasy score

Charlie Dean – 23 years old, 195cm (Collingwood)
2024 VFL: 12 games, 19.8 disposals, 8.2 marks, 1.3 tackles, 80.4 fantasy score
2025 VFL: 3 games, 15.0 disposals, 4.7 marks, 1.7 tackles, 62.0 fantasy score

Anthony Davis – 23 years old, 196cm (Claremont)
2024 WAFL: 20 games, 18.7 disposals, 5.5 marks, 1.9 tackles
2025 WAFL: 3 games, 18.9 disposals, 6.3 marks, 3.3 tackles

Both Dean and Derksen are OOC at the end of the year. Davis would be eligible for the MSD.

The Dean/Derksen/Davis trio all compare pretty well with the more recogniseable names. There may well be athletic and skill limitations that make them unplayable at AFL level, but food for thought.

Just for further benchmarking, here's a couple of other highly rated young KPD who can’t crack their AFL sides yet.

Lewis Hayes – 20 years old, 199cm (Essendon)
2024 VFL: 18 games, 17.6 disposals, 5.8 marks, 1.6 tackles, 70.3 fantasy score
2025 VFL: 3 games, 23.3 disposals, 11.7 marks, 3.7 tackles, 110.7 fantasy score

Leek Aleer – 23 years old, 194cm (Giants)
2024 VFL: 9 games, 12.1 disposals, 4.4 marks, 1.9 tackles, 49.2 fantasy score
2025 VFL: 3 games, 16.7 disposals, 6.7 marks, 1.3 tackles, 68.7 fantasy score

Physical presence lmao, clearly he was either thoroughly West Coast Eagled in record time or those scouts are clueless.

Thank ****ing God. The last thing we need is another Tim Kelly situation on our hands. Give up nothing but salary cap space to get him when he's an unrestricted free agent in two years.

Young guns squad for this weekend. Evans, Cole and Burmeister would seem the most likely options for us to keep an eye on for the MSD.
Coen!

Coz we need a new Anus

For starters you don't do it over one draft, obviously

We're still yet to really hit a proper draft with a healthy rebuild esq draft hand. Barrass departing has enabled that to be this offseason. Thanks to Hawthorns draft hand.

We can also FOR ONCE be the benefit of what is the Free Agency Compo farce. This rarely happens with us, when a "spud" like Allen who is clearly not worth pick 2 can automatically net us compensation far higher in value than the player themselves. We need to absolutely take advantage of this.

Not to throw much shade at Allen, he's middle of his career, injury prone, has kicked 50 goals only once and is in The worst form of his career.

Anyway all of this leads us to finally have a draft warchest to really hit it hard and try to fill some of the MANY gaps on our list. Add in our collection of NGA's coming through and it's even better 👌

"You can't just go to the draft to do a rebuild, evey club has the same amount of picks..." You act like we haven't already commenced our rebuild already. Hewett, Reid, Gross, Ginbey, Shanahan, A.Reid could all be a big part of it, we're already on the way somewhat. A solid offseason hitting the draft and suddenly some of those list holes might actually be filled.

Jury is out on whether it was worth burning pick 2 for Baker/Graham to "raise our floor and stop the floggings" when we're arguably worse this year when we were last year.

What we DON'T want to do is continue being in denial about where our list is at and get seduced into putting a band-aid over our situation by burning quality draft picks that could be long term players for the sake of a short term fix 🚫🚨

Yes, FA is out of the question this year because of Allen leaving doesn't mean that's the case next year. Top it up further. You can still trade and pickup the right players for your list without giving away top picks.

You keep banging on about Warner coming... Why? Why does everyone keep talking about this and entertaining the idea of trading for him to make us more competitive when if we be patient we can add him to our side for the cost of no draft capital?

"Get Bont, trade for Warner and suddenly we've got a top midfield!!!".. yeah sure, for 2 years it's competitive and then what? The rest of the team still sucks. We still don't have our bookends. A solid full back and CHB. Even with Warner and Bont in this hypothetical we still aren't contending for a flag, it's a waste of time as the other pieces aren't there. It's blatantly obvious.

A rebuild is a long mission if you don't have some key pillars in place. Another draft and we might. Sometimes you're in a position to to go the flag push and give away picks, and other times you're not. Take Cockburn for example. They're at the opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to flag window. They've got loads of young talent and are in the position now to burn picks and add players like Bolton and Pickett. Yes it hasn't worked yet because they're a joke of a club, but list build wise they're doing the right things and makes sense for them. It doesn't for us.
I'm at work and the reply has to be quick.

I agree with most of what you've written mate BUT I will say that adding Bont is worth way more than what we'd get out of him as a player, which is amazing in its own right.

He'd be brilliant for the development of our young kids, especially the mids and help them achieve their true potential.

Playing coach and hopefully stays on to become a midfield coach.

That combo is probably worth a mid first round, in my eyes
