So we would have been offering more years, but I doubt substantially more $’s. Fair call by him

Good management by us too. Prepared to match the market value but not overspend.

Perfect player to top up the list with in FA in 2 years but a very risky option to trade the farm for (ala Kelly).

Can now go to the draft with potentially 2 top 5 picks and have a stacked midfield by 2027 to add Chad to.

Would have cost us nothing more than Oscar's compo, how are people trying to spin this into a win? Also in two years Freo will be in a better position to lure him as well. Legit 'didn't want him anyway' copium going on in here.
People cheering a likely two more years of little improvement. If lack of Warner also encourages Reid to go, it would be an epic stuff-up not to be able to lure him home.

I'd honestly take Oscar's compo (if it is pick 2-3) over these two years of Warner. Knowing us we'd probably break his body and/or soul down to nothing being the only mid in there and he'd be a Yeo by the time we were looking good again.

The real crux of everything IMO and the biggest factor in our success, bigger than Warner or Reid or Oscar or Bont or anyone, is that between now and Warner hitting free agency the following players likely move into that 50-100 games range: Ginbey, HEdwards, JWilliams, Maric, Long, Harley if staying, Hewett, Dewar, Hutchinson, Hall, Flynn (yes wow), Archer, Davis, Gross.

That core + a few like Hough and Waterman should shape who we are and Hawthorn-style allow us to figure out our gameplan and identity around the players we do have, then add the absolute cream like Warner when we're mature enough to best utilise him. If the Oscar compo does go as thought we could say Sharp + Rodriguez would be going into their 3rd season if he does come over also. Sure Harley might leave, the picks we'd get for him would be a season or two in as well. Warner to me feels like a player who'll do best in an already-settled midfield rather than leading an inexperienced one.

Front load the shit out of any current contracts, have the biggest war chest ever to make him an offer he can't refuse, or if he doesn't come to us use that on someone else. I'm happier to back us in to build an elite side rather than take the sugar hit of what he'd offer the next 2 seasons.

Wow our war chest needs to go somewhere.
We will have a surplus to spend this year you would think, particularly if Harley doesn't come to the party.
Trade week will be very interesting this year.
Who out there could we lure over with a big pay day. I am sure there are some left field choices we haven't even thought off.
That's fine, we just bring forward cash owed to Baker, Graham, Yeo, Waterman etc.

A lot can happen in 2 years.

If Warner wanted to come home on a massive long term deal, this was his chance. I think this is similar to Tim English, we tried to trade for him in 2022 but he signed through to free agency, then when he became available as a free agent we lost interest and Freo had signed 2 long term rucks.

From a list build perspective, it makes sense to get him for free in 2 years, I just don't think it is very likely.

Especially when it's still tied up in Mutimer's contract :(

Way too much banging on comparatively about the Kelly trade, not landing Warner, signing Yeo/Shuey/NN on deals a year too long.

Signing a bloke who only played 4 games to 7 million a season was an outrageous decision by us and canonically the primary reason for our woes the last few years :(

Is he that much of a good fit to be disappointed in missing out anyway? Does depend on what happens with Harley and Hewett but we have too many of his type already and paying superstar prices for someone who isn’t really an established star yet (although definitely on his way) is dangerous imo.

Also Bont for Hawks pick (so get pick 2 for Oscar) is now massively enticing.

Helps us develop for two years, top up with Chad and still have a couple of years of Bont at a very good level.

Please football gods
This Bont talk is pie in the sky stuff.

It just ain't happening.

I thought he would likely sign on after his brother did.
The silver lining to missing out on him (for now), is that we go to the draft in the last couple of years before Tassie ravages the top end.
When we do trade for him (and probably corey too) again, we will be giving up picks in severely compromised drafts?

Likely means Reid leaves if he hasn't signed on by next year, but at least that'll net us even more picks.

Reeks of Tim Kelly trade situation again so glad it’s taken out of our hands

However to think we’d be fighting for a finals spot again with this current list in 2 years is laughable to me. Nothing suggests we are anywhere near it.

Hell we celebrated getting close to Essendon last week - that’s where we are as a footy club.

When Harley piss bolt( I never bought into him as a more than one contract player) and we get more draft capital, while it'll be exciting, it’s gonna be a little while before we climb up again.

If Reid stays and Hewett, Gross, Allan come on to be very good players.
We draft another gun mid or two this draft who also prove to be very good.
Maybe we don't even need Warner in 3 years.
Maybe the Swans have a lull period, doubtful, as we take off to be back up the top of the ladder when his contract comes to an end.
He could be the cherry on top but then again we could already have that cherry by then.

Time to move on from the get Warner theme.

Who's next?

Unfortunately when your club becomes the rabble and mess we currently are then attracting talent is near on impossible.
There was nothing for Warner to get excited about coming to us.
Sad it’s like that but it’s the reality.
I agree, but my concern is that Warner will now hit his straps for the Swans after a few average games. At his best he would be great, at his average or below nah. I don't think he is the player for a building team.

He is a line breaking midfielder, would have been a great addition.
Anyway we move on, we need to build through draft picks and then in a few years we might become attractive again.
