From dreams of ending 29-year drought... to hoping season ends quickly: 2024 AFL hype ladder - David Zita from Fox Sports

My first impression is that the writer of this piece knows less than your average BF contributor. What do you think?

18) NORTH MELBOURNE
The Eagles finished last in 2023, but the acquisition of Harley Reid means they can at least get somewhat excited about the rebuild to come. North Melbourne has many talented youngsters, but the picture remains quite bleak for them after another dour season and one that felt like somewhat of a false start under Alastair Clarkson given the four-time premiership coach’s extended leave. There’s a bit of development still ahead for the Kangaroos and there won’t be much hope of a surge up the ladder.
Reads like AI. Minus the intelligence.

Should've just said "North are the youngest and least experienced team in the comp and won't likely surge up the ladder but fans have some exciting youngsters to look forward to watching develop".

But you never know with development, we could jump and then regress a little next year, but doubling our wins to 6 should be achievable this year imo.

Our picture remains bleak with Sheezel, Wardlaw, McKercher and Duursma, whilst theirs becomes exciting with the addition of one player. Is he a deity or something?

And Dave will be screaming from the rooftops if we get pick 1 again !

We haven't really had much to celebrate as of recent so there hasn't been much optimism concerning the possibility of climbing up the ladder.

In saying that, if we are to be in games, we need to be clean with the footy. As a young inexperienced side, the chances of a turnover are a lot higher due to the adjustment period required for some young players to get used to AFL level pressure. It is certainly not easy. However, if we are to become a good side (before we start even thinking about premierships), we have to do the basics right. No fumbling (or keep it to very little), no low handballs to feet, no wayward kicking across goal or bad turnovers in the corridor and golly if we can even overcome it, get better at punching the ball through for a rushed behind. This is before we start talking about goal kicking.

Just get the basics right, and we start winning games of footy.

On the positive side, it was mainly the old blokes who handpassed to people's feet..... For the last freaking 15 years!

Someone better tell Dave that Harley can’t fill all the gaping holes on their list…if he thinks we’re bleak…… the Eagles are in a nuclear waste land being taken off life support…..
What a pathetic article…so called journalist……a hamster could write better…even one from Siberia.

I'll give him some credit - most attempts at predicting a ladder pretty much come up with a tweaked version of the previous season's ladder with no teams moving more than 2 or 3 spots up or down, and that never happens. There's always a bolter and a slider. So putting the Crows in the Grand Final, Hawthorn up to 9th, Melbourne down to 10th and the Dogs in the bottom 5 is a nice change.

However, whilst I'll wear someone tipping us for the spoon, the reasoning here is beyond stupid. The Eagles can get excited about Reid and he alone will propel them off the bottom. But North, with 4 of the last 8 top-4 picks, with many talented youngsters, have a bleak picture, can't even get somewhat excited and without much hope.

I'm sure Reid can play, but this article infers that Reid > Sheezel + Wardlaw + McKercher + Duursma. Total bollocks.

Safe to assume Campbell Brown won’t be receiving a nomination for Australian of the Year.

Wow…l remover as a kid visiting Melbourne seeing those ads on Tv….
a unique character 🍺

I met him as a teenager at Arden St in the 80’s and he was a delight

Not very tall, but the crowd parted when he came through

Franco had presence. At one stage he had stores in Norda Melbin and Footisgrey and I remember when we used to play the doggies there was always the joke that we were playing for the Franco Cozzo Cup.
And Brunswick! Yonks ago I used to ride down from Pucka with a mate on the back and drop him at Flinders St. You could zing down Sydney Rd in about 11 minutes ... anyway, this one night we nearly come a croppa after some dodgy af lane splitting and spotting the great man at the same time. A couple of dingbats on a CBR1000 waving and singing out to Franco who smiled and waved back. Mde our night

Spilt up with wife of 19 years and mother of three so that he start dating Mathew Hayden’s 21 year old daughter.
Is she the one that CT shared a Spring Carnival with?

Maybe not as stupid as it sounds .

The top 50 biggest AFL stories of 2023: 5-1

AFL has gone a bit Angus Taylor with the self-congratulations with number 4!

4. Greatest season ever

While not an isolated story within 2023, it is possible many will look back on the year as a whole and remember the greatest season they have witnessed. The AFL's desire to equalise the competition resulted in stunning upsets, constant thrillers, and a sense from most fans that their team was almost always a chance. With a deep pool of contenders, 12 teams remained alive in the finals race in the final fortnight, and it was tight at the very top end as well, as teams jockeyed and swapped as lead contenders. Greater Western Sydney, Sydney and Carlton provided significant spice with their late runs in the second half of the season, while contenders like Port Adelaide and Melbourne hit trouble. It was unpredictable, the football was exhilarating at times, and the premiers provided endless storylines of their own, with the year capped off by a classic Grand Final. Bring on 2024.
