Is that the least talented 5 inclusions we’ve ever seen at Arden St?

It’s incredible to think that 5 years of top end draft picks and that quintet is all we can muster up at round 2!!!!!

It’s sickening. It really is.
There is a manifest over preference of experienced players over rookies. I feel that is one of Clarko's default settings and we've seen that for 3yrs now. I could cop losing and the "we were competitive for longer" bullsh*t that he trots out if we were actually developing talent and not seeing the same tripe take the field week after week.

After yrs of top draft hands it's time to see if they can play or not. Whitlock I can understand is raw/skinny and might need more time but I'd prefer to see Hardeman, W. Dawson and Ford in the team vs Tucker, McDonald and certainly Pink. Just recycling the same crud year after year.

  • Brynn Teakle - Is likely included here so we can include him as an emergency if Comben doesn't get up for the game
Makes sense. The only question is, if Comben doesn't get up, wouldn't you rather have one of the Dawson's as insurance? What's the point of bringing Teakle in for him, if none of our current forwards can play back, which would leave us one key defender short?

They have gone all chips in. Pretty much threw away a whole draft hand because this list is ready to win.
I wouldn't say it's a whole draft hand. Our first pick is about 10 spots lower than it would otherwise be. Still have two second rounders and a third rounder. That's not counting any pre draft trades - may have more picks by the end

Based on what?
I guess you could mount a reasonable case that we probably should have beaten Melbourne last year and hopefully we have improved with personnel and maturity. Obv they have Petracca back and Oliver is fitter but I'm fully expecting it to be a close game and one that is winnable.

I actually think we’ll give this game a red hot shake. Their bottom 10 players are just as inexperienced or poor as ours. We traditionally struggle with quicker transition midfields that play a hard running accumulation style game that allows them to get space ahead of the ball. Think brisbane, Western Bulldogs, Port, GWS and Collingwood.

Outside of Petracca and Langdon, Melbourne don’t have fast drive from the midfield. Yes they are a very contested, strong contested midfield, but I think with X, Parker, LDU and Powell we have the ability to match them there.

Where the game will be won is efficiency inside forward 50. We’ll generate enough inside 50’s to win but we need to make the most of them. No more of this kicking to the edge of the square or the 50m arc. We need to get the ball in deeper to the advantage of our forwards.

Melbourne’s forward line is relatively inexperienced so they’ll be relying on clean clearances and intercepts off half back (Lever & Salem) to give their forwards a good look. Small forwards like Pickett have been our kryptonite in the past, so I think that’s a huge loss for them.

Keys in this game will be:

  • Matching them in the middle
  • Pressuring/Slowing down their transition play. If our pressure matches the 2nd/3rd quarters of last week we’ll give it a good shake.
  • Our efficiency inside forward 50
  • Minimising turnovers around half forward.
  • Locking down on Fritsch/Petracca.

This is where LDU, Simpkin, Parker, Sheezal and Powell need to come into their own. We don't have Pickett to contend with.

Can LDU match the output of Petracca? Can Simpkin match Oliver?

At this stage of their careers the answer has to be yes (or close to it) otherwise they are just not as good as we think they are.

We have invested heavily in our midfield over many years and results are now required.

If we can match them in the midfield then we will win this game.

Who plays on Petracca when he goes forward?

Every time I listened or read the criticism of Carlton this morning, it sounded like they were talking about North. No method in the ball movement, kicking it long in hope, poor forward entries, good in contested ball but not much else, bottom 10 players in the 23 not performing and are battlers etc

I would like to think that with our access to topline talent over the last 5 years we should be well placed not to have those issues, or at least be awaiting on a few top kids maturing but should have most of the pieces of the puzzle on the list already. When Sam Mitchell made a similar comment a few years ago when they were down the bottom (he said despite them being thrashed every week most of the pieces are already in place) people laughed at him. That has been proven as true at this stage with the remaining pieces acquired via trade and free agency. But in our case, the jury is out.

I would think that with all the young talent we should have, add Parker, Daniel, Darling, Larkey, LDU, X, Corr, Logue, Zurhaar etc we should be winning plenty of games and be on the right track. But looking at our 23 last week and this week there is a bit of a strange feel about it. We are not a young side - let's be frank about it. Yet we are a side that's been put together with some glue and duct tape. At least it has a bit of that feel about it.

I am not a qualified list manager of course. No doubt Brady would answer all those concerns with some assuring responses if asked. Maybe we just need to win a bloody game for the list to seem better.
