Player Watch #7: Ben Lennon

Apparently Dan Richardson said on AFL trade radio that Lennon is keen to stay and that it's just some financial haggling.

If we have a bit of cap space to play with, surely we can offer him a bit more? (unless his expectations are unrealistic for a kid who's played 16 odd games).

He pretty much said we were expecting him to sign for less than market value as a lot of our players seem to have done, because 'we need to sacrifice a bit' to get success, and that they are just waiting for Ben to get his head around that and they expect he will sign soon.

You hit the nail on the head, in your last paragraph. That is the hold up.

Fair enough - should take a leaf from Rance/Lids/Riewoldt etc and sign on for less to help keep the group together. :thumbsu:

That's precisely what Dan Richardson was quoted as saying on the RFC webpage:

“We’ve been really strong in in what we’re trying to achieve with our player payments, and over the last few years getting all our players to buy into the fact that if you want to have success and stay together, then there may be some sacrifices that need to be made along the way.

In the same article Richardson was pretty upbeat about Lennon signing a new contract.

In the Bloke's defence, the Club may have offered a piss weak amount. It may not be a case of him turning away 300k a year and asking for 400 plus.
Just on this, a lot easier for the likes of Rance, Lids and Jack to sacrifice 50-100k when they are earning 600 anyway, bit harder when you're set to earn less than half of that.

yes club shouldn't low ball him and Ben shouldn't expect something crazy for a 2nd year player either, meet at a happy medium where club is happy and so is Ben.

Yep...taking a 10% haircut on ca. 300 k must be a real struggle for the poor kid.

Only at the very beginning of his career, and already paid way over anything considered normal salary. Staggered you would haggle for more.

Maybe he wants less money........
Plenty of folk take salary cuts in order to be freed of onerous responsibilities.

Hope Lennon understands that if he wants to be paid at the next echelon, expectations and responsibility will increase commensurately.

Maybe he's one who thrives on that pressure, maybe it eats him up ( I suspect the former)

Maybe he got offered a shit contract by any standards and understands that you can't pay bills without coin in the bank. Maybe a lot of things.

Yeh a career that has a very limited time-span. People in all walks of life try to get themselves a better salary, including most AFL players. Can't understand why so many people are having a go at him for doing exactly what most players do? This is on top of the fact the only actual thing we've actually heard come out of Ben's camp is that he wants to stay, maybe Richmond are completely low-balling him and he just wants a fair deal? There's no way we know what's going on. What is clear is that he will most likely sign for Richmond, for less than he was offered from other clubs. The animosity towards him is amazing.

Maybe Lennon is pissed a the Club and maybe old spruik of the PR thinks to make it seem like the Kid is the hold up and problem is the way to go when speaking in public about it. Maybe.
Maybe my penis is 14 inches long. Maybe.

Maybe, but i reckon there is no such thing as a bad contract on an AFL club list. What's the minimum wage? 150k?

The pie should be sliced up fairly, but perspective should be maintained.
