Hmmm….terrible in the first half. Third quarter ok.

I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt re the Horne-Francis goal early in the last. I could be less generous but can’t be 100% sure I saw what I thought I saw.

Regardless, he can’t be relied to compete and put his body on the line. Don’t care if he had a decent third quarter, move him on.

Unconditional competitors only.
It is okay. Laverde is coming for him 😛

I shitcanned him so hard after that first half.

But I've gotta be big enough to admit that he didn't let that performance get him down in the 2nd. Lifted.

Is that a sign that he can develop or is he a one half wonder? Time will tell. But he did enough to just keep his spot.

It tells me that he has a mature enough head and the confidence to back himself in despite early mistakes and a poor start. A lot of players would drop their head after that first half but he stood up. I’ve liked what I’ve seen so far.

Think there was a bit of over the top criticism of him on Thursday. Yes he could have marked a few but in al honesty there is nothing wrong with going the spoil when the confidence is a bit down. Yes there was one blunder that cost a goal but overall he was much better than he had been the previous two weeks.

What are his strengths?

Elite foot skills?

Kelly was tough, 100% effort and team player. Kelly just got beaten too often and was a ball stopper offensively.

One of the more Jekyll and Hyde performances I have seen from a player. Hopefully the second half version is what we get. Provided he doesn't revert to the catastrophe version probably worth pursuing for a few more games at this point given the cupboard and that he may gain confidence from that.

Not sure if it's when the turn around happened but a ball came tumbling fast and he was on the last line, took it cleanly and in a second delivered a precise pass 40-45 away to a teammate under the pump. Checked my eyes that it was the same player from the first half.

Kick a guy on the ground, real tough guy act.
Do you keep a score on how many mentions you can get out of this ?
I am betting you car has a series of Kelly heads on a stick painted on it 🙂

he played 9 games of seniors across 23 and 24 (3 of them he was sub or subbed out too), its a big step up from VFL to seniors so hopefully he has gotten used to it now and what he showed in 2nd half of the port game is his base level.

I think there is a bit of promise there if can replicate that form, even in first half when he was copping crap from the commentators re double fisting the ball instead of marking, he was at least getting to the right spots.
The one main blemish was a poor read in a marking contest in Q1, he was in the right spot but gave a really half arsed attempt at a spoil.

hey it's my gimmick he's taking and I worked hard for it
Yeah, had a decent second half with the whole team rise, but geez he’s ordinary. In the others games he’s been diabolically shit.
People who say it was one bad half clearly haven’t seen his other stuff.
If this is his new level, then sure he’s ok, but if his level is anything like the prior games he’s played (pun unintended), then he’s trash.

Always seems to lose body contact and drift mentally for a few moments, allowing the guy he’s on to get 5-10m on him, then scramble and “look” like he’s trying. If he was an elite user and had a tonne of the footy, maybe you could justify his spot (like Martin last year), but really I’d prefer the only people in the backline to actually be able to defend, and his disposal is just ok.

His poor defending was consistent in the early game and the preseason - so maybe this is his minimum (hopefully), but most seem to conveniently forget.

Pretty much Ben McNiece MK2

(AFL version, not VFL)

Having watched the game a few times it looks like he started playing a bit more angry after the Port players sledged him after his poor effort to spoil gave up a goal.
