Welcome to Round 8.
Or as Spider Eater once famously sang, Round 8. Catchy. Timeless. Possibly the only Round 8 themed song in recorded human history. (See second post in this thread).
Which is lucky for him, because apparently the big fella has decided one song is enough and innovation is dead. Lift, Spider. Give us a remix. Acoustic version. Dance mix. Spoken word. Anything. Round 8 deserves culture, although now it's about planning for the Round 9 song.
Meanwhile in one of the stupidest thing any coach could do, Stephen King has decided what the Dees really need is Sir Max plonked up forward, because apparently rucks, taps, stoppage work and being the most important player on the ground and 8 time AA are all overrated. Very normal. Very cool. Absolutely no reason for owners to be staring into the middle distance.
But the real business this week is upgrade season.
The cows are fat. The axe is sharp. The calculator is open.
Grjl, Jagga, Blamires, Jaques and Lombard are all standing nervously in the paddock wondering why everyone is checking breakevens and muttering about “structure”. Which of those cows are you ready to slaughter?
Retschko looks like the must-have rookie at $120k. Cheap, playable and arriving exactly when we need a downgrade.
Reidy is there too, but the job security has a bit of wet cardboard about it with Pittonet due back soon.
Arthur Jones has looked great when kicking goals, less great when not kicking goals, which is the traditional small forward roulette wheel of pain.
And for the bold, or the impatient, there’s Sam Cumming. Looks the goods, but you’re paying up early, and as Murdock and Marshall showed us, going early is full of risk.
Then there are the fallen premos, sitting there like discounted Easter eggs nobody trusted in April.
Rowell. Suitcase. Witts. Rankine. Cerra. TDK. Callaghan. Richards. Marshall. Anderson. Dawson. And probably some others I've missed.
Some are bargains. Some are traps. Some are probably both, depending on how much sleep you’ve had and whether your team has already been ruined by Thursday night selection.
Round 8 is here.
Cull hard. Upgrade harder. And for the love of all things holy, somebody keep Stephen King away from magnets.
