Not sure how I feel about this.

Historically, we have not done well bringing in 29 or 30 year olds into the club.

Especially players having a bad year. Not sure he is the type of player, to play well into his 30's.
We've had some ok late career ones. Modra, Farmer, Bell. Even with JOM, for me the question is more about timing than about him: he's borderline and I think we should be preferencing development opportunities.

We've shot ourselves in the foot (yeah, often the foot) when we've thought we can take an injury prone one and expected we could magic it out of him.

Did anyone else read the article and think the headline doesn't really reflect the quotes of what he said? This is why the West is so derided, the article is actually reasonable, the headline writing is shizen
Nothing has changed my mind from the beginning and that is Warner ain’t going anywhere ant the end of 2024. Under contract and Sydney won’t let him go - regardless of whether do or don’t win GF. Think back to Paperley when he wanted to go to Carlton. Negotiations were very difficult and they held him to contact. They also did the same with was it Ryan O’Keffe all those ears ago.

I doubt three picks in the teens would get them even mildly interested in bringing the matter to discussion.

Cameron and Leon Baker are realistic options to request trades to Perth for various reasons. I reckon we’d be right into Cameron. Might result in Walters being tapped on the shoulder and paid out a year early.

It is nice to dream, but really there is no way Sydney let Warner go at the end of this year. Look what they did with Papley. Best case is end of 2025. Would love to know how Corey's status (also out of contract end of 2025) is playing out in all of this. I reckon Sydney want Chad to extend before they deal with Corey, but Chad might not want to commit until he knows where Corey will be.

I think Cameron is more likely to leave due to the issues his iCloud has caused amongst the playing group. Charlie's brother is playing for Swan Districts, so there might be some pull to get to Perth. And he's not going to WC to play out his career down the bottom.

Farmer was still 24 when he played his first game for us and Bell had just turned 25.

This is the list of all players that were over 28 when they first played for Freo.

Given only one of them is in the last 10 years and only two in the last 15, I don't think we can usefully draw any conclusion from it.

I think you just have to take Cameron if available.
  • This would be a mutual parting with Brisbane, they won't be stupid about it
  • Can't sit on here moaning about forwards then pass up one of the best of the last 10 years because he's 30. He's got 2 more elite years in him and I think his game lasts longer than Walters anyway. He's still been good for Brisbane and clearly the off field stuff has had a decent impact.
  • If we are serious about contending, we have the list for this kind of pick up and it really could sling shot us. The upgrade is immense.

The only hesitation I have is not pricing ourselves out of Warner because we've brought in Cameron and Baker. You keep your powder dry for a Warner

In-demand Sydney midfielder Chad Warner says he is not interested in a move home to Perth at this stage of his career and says he has ‘plenty of time’ left at the Swans.
Warner said a shift to either Fremantle or West Coast was not in his thinking “at this stage” as the two West Australian clubs circle the Swans star.
Sounds exactly like any other contracted player would say. Means nothing. “At this stage” “I’m still contracted” etc etc very non committal

Further, none of those players except Modra have anywhere near the CV of Cameron.

Having Cameron boost the forward line for 2-3 years is still important, as we need to be a higher scoring team and further up the ladder in order to be more attractive for whoever is out there (and keep our own players). There's also someone like Collard, who I still have high hopes for and Cameron is likely one of his role models.

When I finish work I'll go through and find the most a 30+ year old has ever been traded for, wouldn't be many above pick 20, Gablett the only that springs to mind and that needed AFL massaging
Surely nothing will beat the crows trading picks 2 and 18 for a 31 year Carey, especially considering that they had a good chance to chase Pav instead.

Wrong draft. It was the 2002 draft, which was absolutely shocking after the top 2.

They only traded pick 4, but then Carlton lost two picks due to salary cap cheating.

Salopek, McVeigh were good solid players. Schultz was good at his 2nd club. Not the worst trade if they only gave up pick 4.

It's amazing people don't talk about it more. I mean at least we got a 250 game All Australian out of the Croad trade.

We should consider trading into next year's first round of that is the case.

Honestly nope. Mcdonald, baker and Cameron while trading Sean Darcy would have been the dream scenario. Jackson is definitely a number 1 ruck.
Agree to disagree on that one.

Jackson looked a million bucks against Marshall and a couple of the other less physical rucks. Out of his depth rucking against the big boys for 80% of the game.

I have zero inside info at all but would note that Charlie is a Colin Young client, and same media drops about him being a trade target happened in 2020 about 5-6 weeks before he got his last deal. Off-field stuff is the big question mark, and all I'd say if he's moved on by Brisbane because of the trip then that is very very funny given some of the other players who could reflect on their own personal behaviour.

Performance wise he hasn't lost any pace. He's just forgotten how to kick it through the big sticks. Worst performing forward by expected score of the top 50 for shots in the comp this year - genuinely awful stuff. I think it is fixable as he hasn't historically been like this.

But surely for that 20 percent we dont need to pay a player 800 odd k a season

Colon? Oh gawd, that changes a lot to be honest. I would have thought rather than "moved on by Brisbane", if it happens, it's more he wants out and Brisbane understand its best to end the relationship for everyone.

Didn't realise it was Colon though, any smoke could just be him being slimey then

Here's the context of the quotes - I don't think you can read much into either way. Found it mildy interesting he was in Perth though, and that Jlo didn't outright deny meeting with him in his chat with Rhino.

Definitely think we're a better chance if Swans win the flag this year. Might need to add a Swans Flag ride section to the Death Ride thread!

Absolutely screams of Colin enjoying giving a drop to the media to extract one last payday for Charlie. Which fair enough, it's his job. But look forward to Colin yucking it up with Riley and Cal on a Gettable ep later this year!

I'd be dismissing it out of hand were it not for off-field trip stuff - but there are other players who I've heard more concrete stuff re that trip about. If Bris were winning games, no one would have bothered reporting on the scandal of football players being unfaithful to their partners.

Don't think it makes sense for us to want to move him on with Fagan having one more year under contract next year, a father son and multiple academy players meaning picks aren't useful etc.

But don't totally discount the possibility that something could happen, who knows.

Cameron still kicking 1.6 goals a game and if there is anything to the rumour, clearly the whole preseason trip thing has a lot of weight. I'd be ok with the Saints pick or working it into upgrading to the Lions first or something.

Hard to argue he wouldn't still be a big upgrade for us
1.6 in a side that’s 3-8. You’d take that in a heartbeat

On the surface maybe, but he is missing most of his opportunities. Not even close most of the time. Might be a one off bad year thing (possibly because of the unrest in the club)or it might be a decline. We would need to know which one imo If the former he would be a good pickup on field.

Col already got his ugly mug on Gettable as fast as he could to spruik his new management Company. They better not let him on again
