71 games across 7 seasons.. why are we doing this? why didnt we just throw better money at Barrass then.

Patton is a small defender, and a few seasons ago one of the best small defenders in the league (then he broke his leg).

If we can get his fit, definitely worth a shout.

I'd like Corey Warner to be brought back in as a HFF too but I see some depth value in Cuningham. He's not going to be what stops us from winning a flag but depth is a good thing.

Blakey I think has the tools to be an excellent defender. His rebounding is obviously very good, but I think he's probably at the front of the line for those who need to pull their heads in defensively. It's all well and good to attack at will but he's got the height, versatility, athleticism, intercepting ability, speed that he could dominate a game defensively if he wanted to. If he really wants to do it, he can be the most impactful defender (not rebounder) in the comp, I genuinely believe that. I actually think in a way he needs to come out from Rampe's shadow. Rampe is still the general of that defence and Blakey needs to assume that mantle and take greater responsibility for the whole functioning of the defence for him to ascend fully IMO.

As for Gulden, his work rate on GF day was so far below what he normally brings that it seems something psychological is at play. Whether he wilted under the pressure or whatever it was, there were times watching him that I couldn't believe I was watching the same guy who motors around from the full back line to the full forward line at will throughout the year.
I think Gulden is very good when he is getting a lot of ball. He runs hard to provide an option. The Swans as a team struggled to get the ball let alone get it to Gulden. Hence he looked ineffective.

I wonder why we couldn't get the ball.

Couldn't have been that we went with two extra "flankers" and not contested on ballers on top of the fact of Heeney getting injured early.

Our rookie draft strike rate has been very ordinary in recent years, the guys you listed were drafted 10 years ago

The last player we took in the rookie draft in the current team is Amartey from 2017. Recent picks in the RD have been failures.

Doesn't change my point that I think there will be good players available in the draft at our last pick and that I am undecided about whether it is better to use that pick on Cochran or someone else. (I'm happy to pick Cochran as a rookie. I'd also be willing to match Cochran as a 5th pick in the ND if it came to that.) My point about past rookie success was just responding to Ruben Grubarb .

There’s always one or two good players come out of the third round onwards.

But history shows most picks from 35 on (across the entire AFL) never make it.

We’ve been better than most at finding “diamonds in the rough” - but the odds are our last pick never plays an AFL game.

We absolutely MUST start getting first rounders right.

Regarding Cochran - do any of us really know? As another poster said - the Swans are pretty good at “hiding” academy talent. He doesnt seem to have the exposed form of kids from other states.

Agree on all points.

I personally have almost zero expectations at all about our drafting strategy given what’s transpired since 2019, and the almost complete bust of the 2022 draft.

On a side note, does anybody have any idea what type of recruiter John Giramondo is? He’s basically Kinnear’s successor from next year, and we know absolutely nothing about how he operates as a recruiter.

All roads lead to softness.
A football club that has gone soft at the top, worrying about being inclusive & all that shit, which is fine, but we are playing a physical game that we are all too nice for. I’ll never forget when Errol was miked up for a game earlier in the year & Fox showed vision & audio of him going up to Grundy & asking him if he was ok etc, etc. Too bloody nice for my liking. Toughen up you bunch of softies. Are you alright. How about just telling Grundy where to hit the ball & to fight it out.
Geez I am still livid from my memories of the two GFs.
This list, players & coaches, have no right to be anywhere near a GF:

I don't think he's being hidden. I think it's touch and go whether the Swans want him. He's a project player. The Swans had a guy call Mitch Woods as their number 1. He's more of a footballer, hard as nails, finds a way to win, but had average disposal. He signed a contract with Canterbury Bulldogs. He'll be an NRL half-back. Possibly top-tier. I don't think he would have cut it at AFL. If you're a mid and can't kick, and you're not Fyfe/Cripps level, you're getting delisted sooner rather than later. That leaves Cochran. They don't know if he's a football yet. Certainly, 3 or more teams noticed his athleticism and wanted to see him at the combine. It will be interesting if he gets called in this deep draft, and whether the Swans would match.

If he gets called we'll match. It's an important part of keeping the faith. My guess is that we hope he slides to the rookie draft.

No we don't really know.

But I also don’t think we're hiding him... He would have run 1 minute slower in the 2km time trial if that was the case.

My take on him is that Cochran has undoubted athleticism but not a natural feel for the game. He's not KPD size and becoming that size would negate some of his strengths, he's also not skilled enough for midfield. He's got the tank, the height gives him a point of difference but what position does that suit? What's left? Winger, high half forward, interceptor? The academy hasn't managed to find his position, whatever it is, so he's going to have to learn it, in an AFL environment. By default, he's a slow burn.

He's high risk but possibly high reward in my book, kind of the ideal rookie pick to be honest and if our hand is forced before our 3rd live pick I'm passing. I'd even be tempted to skip at our 4th depending on who's still on the board

This is pretty much it (I think), BUT

No kid is going to tank the combine. They just want to get drafted. There's other ways to hide players, but I'm pretty sure they're not doing this here. When Heeney and Mills came through, I'm assuming they were just natural footballers. Cochran isn't. They probably needed to spend more time with him.

Don't know how good Mark Blicavs was during his junior footy career before he decided to focus on his athletics but if Cochran has the same desire to learn and develop like Blicavs did we could certainly end up with a similar type of prospect. Tom McCartin still has his deficiencies and is prone to a bath on the odd occasion but he usually performs to his strengths and it serves the team quite well so I'm optimistic on Cochran and would he could offer the team in the future.

As has been said once or 47 times, he seems to be a good rookie or late pick with lots of high level non-football skills that could be developed. He also seems to be the best that the Academy has to offer this year so I cannot imagine that we would pass on him unless another club bid ridiculously early, which would be stupid.
We don't know for certain in what position he'll end up but that's fine, there's plenty of time.

He is not hidden away at all.All of his performances at Swans and Allies level are available on line, and all of his deficiencies are there for all to see. Too many turnovers from kicks.

The comments about him being hidden away are a none too subtle dig at the reputation of the Swans. Sub-terranian commentary really

Exactly

Best case Cochran is a Blicavs type or Nik Cox type

I have said that for several months now

If we can teach him

He

Exactly

I have thought about him in this context also - obviously best case

If we can teach him the game

He could be a great weapon and run riot

His size speed and running capacity is rare

We should hide players, but I don't know what evidence there is that we do do it or are good at it.

As for Cochran, he is a 50+ National draft pick. He would need to improve significantly to be featuring at senior level in his first couple of seasons.

Did someone find some information saying from 2025 there would be limitations on matching multiple bids in the first round if you finish top8/4?

All I can find online says the opposition i.e. there are no restrictions.

If Cochran slides to the rookie draft, can another club with a pick before us select him? Or can we just automatically add him as a Cat B after the main draft?
