Not trying to sound smart, but have you actually watched him play?

He was a fringe very late selection/rookie selection. He would have to improve dramatically to make it at senior level.
Course I haven't. 😂
Obviously you'd want him to come on a lot given where we thought he'd be in the draft. It's rare for players to make it from there.
But shoot me for thinking an elite athlete with size isn't worth persisting with over say....a Kirk who pretty much everyone sees as list clogger with no discernable features or physical traits that could see him step it up to the top level.

How is it that we can take a ruck prospect from Vic at 15 who looks lost at VFL level to the point it doesn't look like he's ever played football, and be excited...yet not give this kid a chance to improve?

Anyway I'm just frustrated with the continued lack of emphasis on drafting physical specimens...and frequently seemingly going for the exact opposite and wondering why it doesn't work out for them at the top tier.

Greatest lot of shit ive ever read , no one will know for a few years
It's not about the players we got, it's also whether we addressed needs well.

Like in 2022, I thought Konstanty would probably turn out to be good, despite not being a need.

Similarly, I don't think Dattoli as a small forward or Bice as a half back were needs. Now that doesn't mean I think they will be average or poor, but I would have rathered cover a need and use our current list options, of which there are plenty, for those areas. Of course, I am heartened by finding out we think Dattoli has a place in our midfield at some point, especially if he's anything like his idol, Neale.

Bice seems like a good player - who could fill a spot in the 22 from as soon as early next year if needed.
But he also seems like the back up to Fox, who is almost a back up himself.

I guess they were worried about the depth in the best 22-26 range of the list and shored it up?
Or they have him as Cunningham's back up - in which case it makes some sense as there isn't a long list for that?

I really don't understand the players that have been compared to Bice.

Rampe, Fox, Cunningham.

He is an attacking half back. Now while Fox and Cunners could perform this role if asked, that isn't the role they ever play. Nor does Rampe.

It's like people see the word "defender" and stop reading.

Bice is comparable to / backup of Blakey, Florent, Jmac, maybe a more attacking version of Lloyd, Roberts. So that's why I question whether we needed him.

I jokingly said in the early preview for Rd 0 next year that we'd replace Fox with Bice to improve defensively, which is actually what I'd be concerned by. That we're moving even further towards attacking, less accountable players.

This is also part of the reason I thought Bowman was behind a bunch of other medium forwards, because as well as proficiency, he didn't seem to have a hard edge or be as ready for the contest.

No KPF
No inside mid (outside some hope for Dattoli)
No bigger contested KPD
No actual small defender

We got Riak and we at least got a medium forward. That's the positives.

And now leaving it up to the rookie draft.

Grade: D
We don't need a KPF. I think, with Buller, the other three will be more than ok. Inside Mid I'll agree with but that is where Dattoli played most of his junior footy. He is very good in that area by all accounts. But he is also a very good small forward. Imagine two Small Forwards, Paps & Dattoli who can play inside mid & kick over 40 goals. Just imagine that. It gives us so many options.

Riley Bice is a small rebounding defender. What's more he is ready to play at the level, having played in Werribee's premiership in 2024. He averaged 21.2 disposals from HB, that is pretty good at any level. We are going to draft an Academy Prospect next year. A bloke called Lachlan Carmichael. He is a 183cm rebounding defender. We are also looking to draft Noah Chamberlain, a forward/wing similar in height to Jordan Dawson & uses the ball just as well

Maybe these two affected what we did this draft?

so, we drafted a Papley 2.0, a Hayward 2.0 a Mal 2.0 and dare I say it, an Aliir 2.0. What 2.0 can the rookie get us. No Francis or Hamling jokes
A (slightly more mobile) Parker 2.0 in Phoenix Hargrave

A (more durable) Sam Reid 2.0 in Tallan Rosenzweig

A Ted Richards 2.0 in Clancy Dennis/Tom Bell

A George Hewett 2.0 in Kade Herbert

Thought initially it was Mills replacement in the backline

But reading his profile it seems just a replacement of Lloyd

If we're looking for that type, this guy is probably the closest to a legit small/medium defender I could find. Blake Leidler was also mentioned as being linked to us as a hybrid lockdown/rebound small.

Melbourne needs to get their own house in order...

It wouldn't shock me that a young player hasn't met his potential under that culture.

Or maybe he’s not very developed and we rolled the dice on a long shot

I don’t have an issue with that, I hope he does well, but he’s a long way behind in his development right now
