I don't think we can rebuild a premiership side around a pick 42 and a pick 16 in the rookie draft. Only an idiot would think we've got enough to work with in our tall forwards with what's on the list

Nick Larkey was pick 73 in 2016 and Josh Treacy was pick 7 in the 2021 rookie draft. Two pretty handy kpf. Let’s not dump Fawcett and Bauer just because they were late picks.

No-ones dumping on them, everyone is saying that if it’s down to probability it’s highly unlikely there’s guys will get through 50 games let alone 100.
We all hope they do and develop into solid AFL standard KPFs but when you go by our past it’s not that likely.

How many KPFs have we seen come and go that we’ve drafted since 2000?
Not many have played 100 games +

6 - Draper
10 - Armstrong
11 - M Reid

This would sort out some major issues on our list in one hit where they all can compliment each other’s strengths.

If the Crows bypass Draper I reckon that would cut the chances of him even wanting to go back to the crows if he takes it personally.
Being overlooked by the Crows will light a fire in his belly and the SA skipper will be raring to go from day 1.

Plenty of inside midfielders available at 18-24 as well as some KPP but we insert some absolute class with these picks and a touch of hardness with Draper and Lalor not afraid to crack in.

If that was our first four picks then we’ve absolutely killed it. One small forward or outside runner Berry, Hannaford type also and then slide and trade our way into 2025. Obviously we’d pick up another player later as well. Possibly a player like Jack Ough. I would also consider Dodson. I know lots of posters don’t want a ruck pick but Dodson has an amazing possession rate for a young ruck.

We have picked Jack and Richo in the last 30 years, and Richo was a father/son. I wouldn’t be relying on our record with the high selections we have had over that time. I would be trying every option because it appears to be a low probability of finding a really good kpf no matter what pick we have.

I agree that it’s a must to take a KPF but who is to say the KPF we like the most is projected to go that early. If for example Richmond rated Jonty Faull the best KPF, it would be unlikely we’d use pick 10 or 11.

I don’t rate them that highly Jack at about 18 and Matt about 25.

To just show how hard it is to develop a key forward. Here are our notable drafted KPF’s since 2000. Very damning how hard it is to get to 50 games let alone 100. We are so lucky we had a gem in Jack or we could’ve been in some strife.

2002 - Jay Shultz. Was a success at Port but never had consistency at Richmond and struggled playing alongside Richo.
71 games for Richmond 58 goals. Best season was 16 goals in 12 games.

huge question marks over both these payers durability. Fawcett sick all year & Bauer is very injury prone. Qn marks over Lynch's ability after 2 horrendous seasons for him and the club.
Qn marks over Gibcus, Lefau post injury & over Ryan & Kosi's form.

We would now know whether they are up to it or not.

To be fair, was CCJ that earlier speculative KPF? Biggie Nyuon? Was it worth overpaying Chol to stay instead of bargain pick-up Kozi?

1 or 2 picks on Key Position players is fine. The issue is with mock drafts that have us taking 4+ talls

CCJ was a pick 20, just started to show a bit in 21. Jack R & Lynch KPFs and Nank No 1 ruck. North threw $2 mill/4 years at him we couldn't match. Chol was forced to play ruck at punt road. Suns & Hawks play him KPF, where he thrives. Again Bolton, Dusty & Lynch on $millions meant we couldn't match offers.
It wasn't until 2023 that we would've needed CJ or Chol.
