He's an excellent athlete, average footballer. I can see the appeal but it's banking on him improving in a lot of footy specific areas that others in the draft around that mark are already well advanced on.
Balta like.

Pick #23:

Harrison Oliver

State: Victoria Metro
State League Club: Sandringham Dragons
Community Club: St Bedes/Mentone
Date of Birth: 15/06/2006
Height: 181cm

A composed and hard running medium defender who helped set the play up for Victoria Metro with his great decision making and precise left-foot kicking. He averaged 16.2 disposals at 83 per cent efficiency and 3.2 tackles across four matches at the National Championships, with his speed also a weapon in breaking the lines. Was rewarded with All Australian honours and capped a great year with a premiership win for the Sandringham Dragons, where he was also selected in the Coates Talent League Team of the Year.
Weapon: Speed and dynamic left-foot kicking
AFL player comparison: Josh Kelly

“One of the most well regarded ball users in the draft, boasting a wand-like left foot and the ticker to take gutsy overhead marks.”
Will be a gun ! His kicking is amazing.

In response to zero demand, and utilising my in depth knowledge of the draft based on reading stuff from people who have read stuff from people who watch the players, and who are not actual employed to draft players into the AFL, here are my thoughts.

Firstly, doing this is more worthwhile than whatever it is I am actually paid to do.

Secondly, we should think of this as a rebuild over multiple seasons. 2024 is not a one off for draft picks or trade/FA.

Thirdly, the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Drafting should think more broadly of team structure and balance - see GWS getting so many good mids that they start shedding them left and centre.

Fourthly, yeah whatever. Oh yeah, structure is 1) midfield, 2) spine, 3) rest, and leadership and character is super important to me. We have a good amount of young KPDs. After that not a lot of depth in younger guys. But we also have a number of talented young players, who look like they can become good role players at least.

Context -
  • This draft has a abot 35ish first round quality players. So every player we draft is good. This is a good draft to build the core of a list.
  • The Tigers are likely to be last next year. May surprise, but still will likely have a top 5 pick.
  • This year is top end mid heavy, with a good number of good but not elite KPs. A number of the draft gurus have said that next year has multiple KPs better than any this year. So I wouldn't reach for a KP until the really good mids are gone.
  • We can trade into a better position this year, and into next year.

Only richmond picks, and focussing on type of players. Assuming no trading, btu discussing trades.

Pick 1 a player who can crack games open - So likely Lalor or FOS. Lalor has huge upside - elite multisport athlete. Never truly fit or dedicated to footy. Lalor great leadership, which I rate very highly. FOS injured this year, very very good at many things. Possibly Lalor for upside and leadership, but it's hard because he hasn't truly shown what he can do so far.

Pick 6 a mid who absolutely offers a point of difference and leadership - Jagga is my hope here. He would be perfect.

Picks 10 and 11. If high end mids have slid then pick them, otherwise difference makers. I am agnostic to position if the mids aren't here, just get guys who can make a difference.

Picks 18, 20, 23, 24. Round out the positional structure. Also looking for guys who will be competitive at the AFL level and allow us to build a long term balanced team. So I am OK with a ruck, KPF, small forward, rebounding defender etc. Not looking for a KPD (trainor is great, but I am very leery of his concussion issues)

Trade wise.
  • If we can do a double trade 1) Saints 10 or 11 plus 20ish for 7, the 7 and 20ish for 2, then we get 1,2 , 6 to build a high end low risk midfield in one hit. Fill in holes thereafter. And we keep 10 and 11 for he best of the rest.
  • Slide for a later 1st + F2. Do that a few times and get 2 or 3 F2's. Next year teams will need points and F2's will be very valuable.
  • Trade for F1's if possible.
  • Buy picks with our spare cap space.

May end up with less picks this year. But better quality. Then next year 2 or 3 1sts plus the ability to trade into other firsts for 2025 or 2026. Get the best available - hopefully a top end mid and top end KPF.

By 2026 have a strong midfield for a decade set up, spine set up, top end talent for small forwards and ball movement. Then fill in with more drafting, trading and FAs.

Not a list of p[layers, but more of a strategy that I hope we follow. This is a great year to suck and have our draft hand. Pity there is no Reid this year, but very happy with where we are at.
Did LOL at the bolded.

All very pertinent points. Hit the draft hard again next year using spare salary cap to purchase picks and add to our draft capital.

Looks like 2026 is the year to target (buy) players, we'll have had 3 years of banking 10% of our salary cap, we can also pull 2 years of F1's which coincides with Tassie pillaging the draft in 2027 & 2028. We could easily target 2 contracted players and have the finances to pay for 2-3 FA's on top of that.

Started in top 5 conversations now not top 20 due to concussions. concussion is a career ending reality.
Its RFC style to have 200cm KPF/rucks on the list. I think we take Whitlock or Gerryn.

195 Armstrong at 10.

Maybe we see Trainor as a KPD. .

Need Bolton & D Rioli replacement later in the draft
If we take Armstrong if he's there then we're into Cadman.
If not we take Whitlock.

Watched in a couple of Sandy games and Metro games. Solid and effective, but didn’t standout. Maybe that’s a backman thing.
But I didn’t really see him break lines with his speed as described above, he doesn’t play-on much after a mark. His disposal is very good, his kicking very precise, maybe a bit lateral or wide, not taking on the centre corridor…could be a small sample size of what I’ve seen. Still think Lindsay and Berry are more damaging kicks. Most have Oliver mid/late 20s pick. He’s a solid talent at that point of the draft.

I dont think he has a ground game and his height is only 193-194 not a monster. Faull ultra competitive with ground game but not as good of a kick.
Armstrong all of the above, him and Reid at 10/11 phwooooar you'd be able to bend steel over it.

This comment voids you from ever calling tiger_tough dumb again.

The only concern is taking ESPN's word on anything to do with footy. I'd doubt the scores if I read them on ESPN. FOS has no issue winning the contested ball.

Add FOS and it's a premiership midfield.

Trainor is not a KPP, he's a third-up man. A taller Dog Stewart. Massive pass, with a Steve Smith/Marnus flourish.

No.

Trainor is 194cm. Every write-up before his concussion labelled him as clearly the best key defender in the 2024 draft. His head knock somehow now has him as a flanker who may never play again.

If he’s there in the 20’s I’d take him in a heart beat.

Who said the other day he only ever takes chest marks?

Disposal by hand and foot looks pretty shite TBH.
Hes raw but fmd those hands and that kick. He has a bit of campaigner about him too and looks like he hates losing contests. Would be a massive headache for teams as a deep forward. Top 10 in agility too.
