What is Mitch Owens contract situation because if there is one player I would want it’s him, absolute jet.. seems to have all the attributes of the modern day AFL medium forward which makes you wonder how he went so late in the draft.

Fwiw I would trade TDK for MO in a heartbeat.
Hahaha yer we wouldn't trade Michito for anyone.

After that article earlier in the year about us wanting to target bayside talent, you'd assume we at least ask the question.

Keeps getting linked to us. Pretty sure he's a Saints fan too.

This is correct.

Cameras caught a young Miles at the same 2009 Preliminary Final that a young Jack Higgins attended 😃

Thought he was pretty good against us on Friday night but he does look a lot like jhf. He was bloody good. If he wants to come home we just find a way to make it happen

Do you think he is worth a shot with a late 2nd rounder? Or future 2nd?

Hard to say. He'd be a wingman/ high half forward/ rebound back longer term. It looks like he's not a great user so ideally he would replace Wood in a couple of years as he winds down. He's a decent goal kicker from what I have seen and gets them a lot like Wood, snaps or long range set shots.

He looks like he's having an ordinary season so far and not stepped up. You might get lucky if he wants out and his form is average and get him for a third. On current form you'd have to have a think about what players there are in the draft around our second pick before you did the deal.

You are buying on potential and he's probably just stepped over that promising kid point in their career to might not be as good as you'd hoped stage. At this point of the season he's looking like a bit of a GOP but we'll see how he goes as the year rolls on. Port are playing him so see a future for him, they have plenty of depth.

Pretty good assessment IMO , don't think he is ever going to be a star

Since Bassat's review the question that he asked, "What do we have to do to win a flag?" (ok. maybe not a roper quote). The question that I have asked myself is can I see this group of players/coaches win a flag?

We've made the coaching changes and they deserve the time to show their merits, the same for the changes in recruitment/player management.

The on-field changes are a different thing, the game against Port hasn't changed my thinking, the same issues keep coming up.
Lack of a tap ruck man, lack of a breakout midfielder, lack of a key forward, one big key defender needed.

Remembering that Bassat has said that we're comfortable sliding down the ladder this year, that we look to be in the finals next year and competitive the following year.

If I look at the list however some of those questions about rucks, key defender, key forward may have already been answered, in three years with Keeler and Heath we may have the ruck men we need, with Adams and VanEs we may have the big key defender we need, with Keeler and Caminiti we may have the key forward we need.

What we don't have is dynamism in the midfield, or at least not to the level of competing with Melbourne or Brisbane, or Carlton or the Bombers or Port or the doggies and probably not Adelaide either. Port beat us by playing finals football, high pressure one on one competing, and Windhager aside we don't have young mids coming through. What we do have is a puzzle and maybe the answer in Phillipou and Owens.

As the season goes on King comes back, Hayes comes back Caminiti comes back Hayes comes back, Keeler potentially comes in, they don't push Owens and the Pou out, they push them to more midfeld minutes. As Coffield, Billlings, Webster come back, they add further pressure in the midfield, through injury Van Es or Adams come in maybe they do push Battle and Howard.

The argument becomes "What is our best midfield in three years' time?" because we're building a list noy just for next year but for where we will be in three years' time, who we draft this year will be our midfield in three years
Because in three years
Zak Jones will be 31
Jade Gresham will be 28
Brad Crouch will be 32
Seb Ross will be 32
Brad Hill will be 32
Jack Steele will be 30
Jack Billings will be 30
Mason Wood will be 32
Jack Sinclair will be 31
Hunter Clark will be 27

Regardless of who we trade out there will be 8 that are coming to the end of their careers, or already at it. Above all we need to draft really good young midfield talent, while I'm not intrinsically against getting Fyfe or Whitfield they can only be short term answers, Fyfe will be 34 and Whitfield 31. They are very short term prospects interesting, fun even and may be great for a year or two, but not the answer for three years time. If they cost nothing but a salary ok but as list managemnet they're very meh.

Of the above, regardless of their current merits who do we invest in or just keep, who do we trade? The only ones that have trade value i.e. early second or first round pick would be Gresham and Clark. The complicating factor is Ben King, the more we want him, the more we pay for him the more we need to get back in other trades to find the mids that we need. All of a sudden the focus becomes not the just the midfield but who we can afford to trade out and still be at strength. The development of Adams and Van Es is crucial because we may need to make a choice on Battle or Howard, because they will have trade value, Caminiti will have trade value where will he sit if we get Ben King, or does getting Ben increase the pressure on the backs because we want to play him back.

In the short term our midfield is our greatest weakness, in the long term the midfield is our greatest weakness, in the long term it's the easiest to fix through the draft, we need to be very clear and clever on who we draft and who we trade.

I would trade Battle, Clark and Gresham, not because they are poor footballers but because they are good footballers, we can cover their loss and they will get us a return as draft picks. The draft picks that we need to invest in higher potential midfielders.

I’m hearing Bergman wants to come back to Melbourne. No idea if we are interested
Said similar back in August , very late second or third pic , just an average player at this point in time

I see our issue a little differently

I think we have the players to have a very strong midfield, but some of them aren't playing in the midfield. What needs to happen is Sinclair needs to become a full time mid and Owens need to play mainly in the the midfield with maybe a bit of time forward, not the other way around.

I also think Windy has a heap of potential, and I still think we haven't seen the best of Bytel.

But who of our current midfielders can do we push out?

Crouch gets 30+ regularly, and works his arse off, but how well does he use the ball.

Clark has X factor and is a point of difference.

Steele is currently a long way off his best. He's a ball pig but has never been a great field kick.

Gresh has X factor and can play forward, but has had a poor start to the year, although was better this week.

What would I do? I'd build a midfield around Sinclair, Owens and Clark. I believe that would be an upgrade as a midfield unit on anything we've had for a long time.

Along with the Pou in the short term I agree with you, how do you see us in three years' time?

Same 3 guys with hopefully Windhager, Bytel and Pou firing too.

I think in 3 years time Windy and Pou will be absolute guns.

For me, while Crouch is a very good player, we've got better options going forward.

If Steele gets back to his best obviously he's in the mix.

Gresh can go forward and pinch hit though the midfield if needed.
