Sam McClure said de Goey was us or geelong…

How the * can Geelong keep affording players?
If he went to Geelong it would be to better his footy and have the chance of playing in a champion team.

If he came to St Kilda It would be to continue to turn up when he chooses to without expectation of excellence and to get well paid.

So before you tell me I'm wrong, what contract do you think his manager is asking Geelong for, and what kind of contract do you think he's asking St Kilda for?

I apologise for promoting predatory behaviour and sexism but some men in nightclubs try to pick up the best looking girls and they will accept whatever they have to do to get them. Others prey on their slightly less thin/less attractive friend who will be grateful enough to do whatever they are asked.

I think we all know which of the girls in this example is St Kilda, and which girl types like DeGoey would select if he wasn't a star and didn't have an AFL player's body.

None of our players wants to leave St Kilda because they are all great buddies, it's cushier than most AFL teams and who knows you might even win some games?

We're a good time team.

Hard to argue with this TBH.

His old man would never allow it, but it would be a good way to prompt an offer from the Bummers. I'd ask for a 2nd and accept a 3rd at this point. Not that that's he's not worth more than that but it's about the improvement as a whole not just one trade.
The most difficult thing with North now is that you might get a decent contract and even decent length on the contract but their selection policy means youre selling any capital you have as a player for that one pay day.

Stephenson, Polec, Bosenvulagi, Coleman Jones all went for money/picks and all will likely never play AFL footy again once their contracts at North are done.

Compare that to GC for example, Ellis, Markov, Weller, Chol have all improved and will play for years at GC or elsewhere.

North is where careers go to die now.

Honestly IDGAF. You sit young Jack down and say we don't see you as in the best 22 next year we'll be prioritizing kids. The rest takes care of itself.

I can shed light on this.

Higgins and Dahlhaus - retired / delisted at the end of this year (Dahl for example is on $500k - signed a 4-year deal as an UFA and expires at the end of this year).

Selwood - either retire or only 1-more year.
Hawkins - 1 or two more years then retire.
Tuohy - 1 more year then retire.
I. Smith - 1 more year then retire.
Stanley - 1 more year then retire.

Menegola, Narkle, Sav etc - trade bait.

We're about to have a lot of salary cap room with pending retirements. All we have to do is backend JDG contract and he can easily fit in.

FWIW I think he'll pick Saints as I think you'll likely offer more money.

Well thats all well and good but he has to agree to go to North and if hes got half a brain he wont cause he might get some decent money until 2025 and then his career is probably done.

Who said Norff? Wasn't me...
Well hes gotta agree to go anywhere and someone else suggested North would likely want him (not sure too many others would be keen) and would likely be willing to offer more cash.

Hes not a player that will have 10 clubs banging down our door, North might be one of the only (if not the only) suitors and hell say no to them i would think.

This is true a fair few big $$ players nearing the end.

None of them live in Geelong though... they all live in Barwon Heads, Torquay & along the Great Ocean Road.
This is 100% correct and quite often overlooked. I live in Ocean Grove. I consider Geelong to be a dump, personally, but life on the Surf Coast is very attractive for a lot of people. Some of the best beaches in the country / world. A lot of Melbourninans have moved down here recently and pushed house prices up on the Surf Coast. They see a great lifestyle here and value for money. It's why a lot of people choose this area. I haven't been in the Geelong CBD for years (Cats games aside), no need to, and I certainly would not want to.

Didn't have any last trade period so opted for 4 at the Saints on lower money.

If anything less attractive now with a contract and form not significantly improved.
No takes when OOC, would cost more now so just as much interest as last year.

If you want to trade they have to have value, Gresham, Clark, DMAC, Marshall, Steele, Membrey, Wilkie, King, would be the best bets.
Not saying trade them but they have value.

  • Dan Butler
  • Paddy Ryder (1 more season)

DELIST:
  • Ben Long (could rookie draft)

AFL DRAFT:
  • Trade the future second (tied to Fremantle) for pick 35 (Melbourne)
  • With pick 10 select Elijah Tsatas (an insanely talented midfielder from the Oakley Chargers, Tsatas is known for his quick burst from stoppages and his natural ball winning ability. Tsatas would be best 22 immediately.)
  • With pick 35 select Luke Teal (190+ cm defender with immense potential, however quite raw. Good intercept marker and distributor by foot. Injuries could be a concern.

ROOKIE DRAFT:
  • Look for mature age recruits who could help out straight away, some options could be:
  • Jacob Dawson (29 avg disposals)
  • Marty Hore (27 avg disposals, elite intercept defender, former Demon)
You need to put a bit more thought into that bro.

Was thinking of these advantages this morning, relatively cheaper than Melbourne, meaning due to Geelong success they can offer relatively less in contracts.

I dont think anyone is suggesting he has alot of value but a North might be willing to bring him in (this is less about us getting something of great value for him and more about the list spot and giving him a chance to play better footy without us whipping him).

Ha ha - absolutely!

I do think JDG will pick you guys though. If you can keep him on a tight leash he'll be a fantastic get. Genuine matchwinner who will improve any team he goes to.

I fear what he might become if he goes to you... so i agree

That's what St K thought they could set up in Seaford.

Thinking players would be attracted to living life on the peninsula... unfortunately for us, the lifestyle on each side of the bay is very different.

The Mornington Peninsula ranges from mega pricey but desirable (Portsea/Sorrento/Mount Martha) to full of retirees (Safety Beach/Dromana) to full of single mums (Rosebud) to nothing but holiday houses & Air BNBs (Rye/Blairgowrie). Ignoring inland & the Western port side, its not really comparable to the lifestyle of the Surf Coast.

Having said that, I prefer the MP to the BP thanks to the quality of the golf courses & fewer Geelong supporters.

From memory I think McEvoy was one of the few who lived on the peninsula with the vast majority of our list preferring to stay bayside closer to Moorabbin (and the bright lights of the city).

Remember #CoffeeGate re Seaford? :D

Did someone say Jack Billings?

I think a lot of people here need to be reminded that Jack Billings has a contract at the Saints until the end of 2025. He ain't goin' anywhere. No team is likely to stump up enough to make him break that contract.

So no, he is not going to be the source of fresh draft pics for us.
We know...but we can still dream. It just makes some of us feel better.
