Lachie Young as well. We attempted to push the FA rules but ended up trading for him.

I'm going to twist history and say we traded Ben Brown and a future second for Stephenson, Atu, Young, Corr, Greenwood and CCJ.

Greenwood is a great signing by North Melbourne isn't he?

That's a genuine second inside bull to pair with Cunnington and a second mid who along with Anderson and soon Horne-Francis who can bring it defensively to an elite level.

The commonality with Horne-Francis and Greenwood of course is how great they both are defensively - just nailing guys with their tackles and bringing that energy to that side of the game. On top of that, as with Greenwood, Horne-Francis doesn't win any soft ball, winning a high % contested and really impacting games with every possession. That's where the similarities end between the two.

My comparison for Horne-Francis that I settled on late season, and until I settled on this one I wasn't comfortable with any one comparison - is Toby Greene. Horne-Francis has that same hardness and high impact per possession game where whether he's up forward or through the midfield he can on his day turn games and be the most influential on the field. He has those same ball winning, one-on-one and aerial gifts, though you're getting another level of application defensively and a touch more speed. And he should be more a midfield version when North Melbourne have the midfield minutes available for him.

Seriously smart list management by all and sundry.

Clayton, Luff and Rawlings first with Young and now Greenwood. People can (rightly/wrongly) b*tch about the CCJ overpayment, but they have seriously nailed this one. It allows us to manage Cunners a bit more, experiment with Jed as that pressure half-forward for longer, adds more tackling pressure to the midfield and gives us more general midfield depth, which is never a bad thing.

I take your point and it’s a reasonable one.

The counter argument is that all we’ve done is pick up a B grade midfielder who’ll be too old to play any meaningful role in our next premiership and thereby diluted future draft value and tarnished an otherwise pure list strategy with a return to Scotts era middle rung pap.

Not sure how I feel about this one.

Is he better than a late pick that might get no game time and delisted?
Yes
That's all you need to know. We literally got a Half decent player who's dominating tackling stats for nothing.

Can't believe there is negativity about this one, some just are never happy. Yes he is a break away from our recruiting strat but we will be getting another 3 at least incl the best pick plus another top 20 pick kid to add in. This is much needed cunners cover which we saw again last season that for time being we drop off considerably when cunners is out. We don't need every player to be there for the next tilt... we need some to assist the kids to get there... great get north

I think you're right normally but the type of player I think supports a list build. It's a bit like when Melbourne delisted McDonald and GWS picked him up. He protected the kids from having to do grunt work before they were ready. He set great training standards and leadership. I value Jed in the same way. I think they both really compliment the list build. I think this will fast track development rather than hinder it. The opposite of getting this bloke would be bringing in Judd/Alblett to star and take the pill away from guys who need the development.

They want a pick for jones leaving :/

Carlton’s head of football Brad Lloyd insists the club did not give Liam Jones an ultimatum or timeframe regarding his stance surrounding vaccinations.

The defender has opted to retire from AFL football, citing personal reasons for his decision.

Lloyd says the unvaccinated 30-year-old was not given the hurry up to make a rash choice, with the club fully supportive.

“Liam has made it pretty clear that he wanted to keep the reasoning private, but I’ll work through what we can,” Lloyd said on SEN Breakfast.

“We were in regular contact with Liam through the end of the season around his playing future.

“We threw support around him so he could make a decision on where he wanted to go with his future, but it sort of escalated in the last week-and-a-half or so.

“It really came to a head late last week and over the weekend that Liam was pretty strong on his decision to retire from AFL footy.”

Lloyd assured Blues fans that he was not given a push by the club.

“I guess his reasoning is personal but there was no ultimatum in all of this,” he added.

“There is a choice throughout the industry but certainly no ultimatum whatsoever from that point of view.

“We give as much information on all areas of what’s happening at the moment and allow all our players to reach a decision.”

From a list viewpoint, Lloyd says Jones’ vacancy can be filled via the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP).

He also indicated that the Blues will seek an extra selection at the National Draft later this month.

“We’ll be able to replace Liam’s position on the list,” Lloyd confirmed.

“The supplementary period where you have train-on players train with the club and then the ability to replace Liam’s position with one of those players post-draft.

“We’ll also discuss with the AFL the possibility of having another pick in the draft if that’s a chance.”

Lloyd says the club fully expects all currently listed players in both the AFL and AFLW programs to be fully vaccinated for the commencement of pre-season training.

“We really support the vaccination program through the State Government and the AFL,” he added.

“Our playing list, men’s and women’s, we expect to be fully vaccinated as we return to training in the next couple of weeks.

“So fully supportive throughout the playing group.”

Despite the Jones situation, new coach Michael Voss is all systems go towards his first season in charge at Ikon Park.

“We’ll move on really quickly with our playing list and work through ways to get another player in and keep moving,” Lloyd said further.

“He’s pretty excited about the season. Brian Cook’s started, Vossy’s got all his coaches on board and he’ll move pretty quickly.”

Jones played 95 games for Carlton between 2015 and 2021 after starting his AFL career with the Western Bulldogs where he played 66 matches.

He retires after 161 overall games across 13 seasons after he was drafted by the Dogs in 2008.

Can someone please remind me: When the Duck made a dumb decision and let his dick out of his pants resulting in him not playing with us the following season, did we get a free draft pick?

Didn't think so - onya bike Carltank.
