I still can't understand why we would do the trade if we knew we would get who we want anyway. #stillconfused
Coz you don't know that.

Port could have taken 22 and given it to someone else who would've taken the player Brisbane were after.

My take.

Port were fielding trade offers from teams wanting to move up to draft a specific player.

We got wind that these teams were after the same player as us.

We clearly rate this player far ahead of the next player on our board.

So we trade a future second round pick to move up one spot.

Port move back one spot and now can auction their new pick.

Big cost, but the clubs recruiters and Noble’s analytics man must think this player is worth it.

I've got it now people, please excuse the old man in the corner.

Confusing trade downgrading a second round pick for a fourth round pick just to swap places with Port.

I seriously doubt Port would've been interested in whichever player we want all to move up from the fourth to second round in next years draft.

Great piece of trading by Port when they more than likely weren't going to draft the player we want.

Confusing why we'd be so desperate.
Think about it, Hawthorn could have offered up their next pick and next year's first for it.

Heavily reliable information from an insider. Mainly his kicking and probable return to Perth the two reasons we'll pass.

Wow. I’m shocked to hear this. I thought we would def snap him up if available. Cheers for the inside word Panthera.

You would think it has to be Deven Robertson, he'd be the only player still left that multiple clubs would want.

I'd be very interested to know where we had Deven Robertson or whoever we take if it's not him ranked on our draft board, sometimes they divulge that information post the draft eg, Hugh McCluggage we had at number 1.

You would have to think it will be Robertson.
It's only fair when we delisted one we had to balance it out and get one in. Hopefully gets a different number.

Deven had shoulder surgery for ligament damage so that along with his disposal may have contributed to his slide in draft.

Could it have also been a handshake possible deal if things go a certain way when the original PA and Lions trade went down? Then, when whoever it is was still in the frame, the deal was done. Just spit balling.

Port didn’t have this pick then.

Last night this pick went GC —> Carlton—> Port —> and now Brisbane.

It’s because we don’t know. Port may not want the player we do. But other clubs may want that player. So Port trades with the other club, the other club take the player we want. Port get the player they want (as he wasn’t in the sights of the third club or us) we then take the next best available. We did the trade to ensure Port ain’t trade that pick to another club, thus we ensure we don’t lose the player we want to the third club.

A lot to give up to move up a spot, even with the threat of someone moving in front of us if we didn’t.

Having said that the future second is likely to be late as I can’t see Collingwood missing finals and due to all the bidding. I would normally think a future third should be the price to slide up a spot but there is the argument that a late future second next year is functionally the same.

The future 4th back to us is pretty insignificant.

Considering all the academy/father sons/GC compensation next year, Collingwood's future second would probably be pick 40+. I don't think it's a bad deal at all. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, obviously we rate this player very highly - whoever it is.

We have the AFL to thank for this anyway, we should have had the first pick of the second round had they not chopped out GC. Was shrewd trading by us last year, full well knowing GC were highly likely to finish last. Pretty annoying stuff really.. that should have been us cashing in on the pick, not coughing up extra for it.

Yeah I wondered if the go home factor would get a mention.

It’s been quietly bubbling in the background.

But I wasn’t going to be the first to raise it.

Problem is West Coast doesn’t have the draft picks to move up at all. And Fremantle’s only trade-able pick is a future second round pick tied to Melbourne.

The first para was my attempt at rationalisation too but I think it’s a bad process for making a decision. Not a big deal but I loved us moving down and acquiring future picks last week so being consistent I don’t live this.
