I would take fyfe at 1.3 over kelly at 1.5 + 2 first rounders
Fyfe would also cost a couple of good picks as Freo would most likely match and force a trade at 1.3

that freo midfield is pretty bloody good, but look at fyfes form. its pretty meh. he's turning it over and has no impact on the scoreboard like he previously had. the best they can muster is 1 game ahead of us

i'd be pretty disturbed by that if i was a freo fan given who they have in the midfield and the age of it

Totally impotent forward line — can't remember the last time I saw an inside 50 contested mark. Much like us.

Good, then instead of saying "I don't want him, imagine what the media would say", how about "I'd love to have him but I doubt the board will let it happen because of what the media would say"? I could almost stomach that. By the way, I would imagine that conversation has already happened or I doubt the club would be going ahead and announcing their interest in Martin as Cox just did. Wouldn't you imagine that chat has already taken place? So if you really don't care what the media say and the board has OK'd the whole thing, do you still care? And yeah it was a rant with capitals and exclamation marks. Good to see it was interpreted as intended. I can't stand the gutter dwellers in the media and I hate it when people suggest that their opinions matter.
As for sponsorship, is this naive?
June: "Oh damn, we just lost a sponsor".
October: "Awesome, we just won a flag. Can all you prospective sponsors line up out the front?"
Companies have short memories, flags are NEVER forgotten (especially Saints flags).
Did cox announce we are interested in Martin?

Clearly you care about the media or you wouldn't use such emotive language to describe them. I'm not keen on them either but whether I like it or not their opinions do matter, to suggest otherwise is naive.

It's not a situation of Martin or bust, at present it's who will we use our picks and cash on.

The board would take all factors into consideration as they should.

It's only other saints spitballing ideas and opinions.

That's logical, I care about them because I call them gutter dwellers. Naive again? Hey man, I bet Richmond can't wait to get Martin off their list, being so worried about what caro thinks and all? Must be tough winning all those games with 70k fans while worrying about all those sponsors and media opinion. I guess 500k will be plenty to get him. But yeah, naive. Lol.
Re cox:
However Cox says that the club remain interested in the two other high-profile free agents, GWS on-baller Josh Kelly and Richmond star Dustin Martin.
From sen.

If that's the case were interested, the rest is just garbage.

No one has suggested that richmond are keen to see Martin leave or that he won't cost a packet.

Richmond are a big club have been all my life you think they get 70,000 just because of dusty?.

He is their problem at this stage, dealing with your problems is different than acquiring other people's.

The media just don't matter, I better tell all those politicians doing door stops, radio and television appearances, paid advertising etc.. Someone tell rupert Murdoch his empire is worthless and his revenue streams from advertising are about to dry up, it doesn't matter no one watches or cares.

Yeah lol.

As a player yes no doubt... factoring in cost is where it gets tricky

I guess that's the clincher right there. How much is too much? 12m over 9? It's starting to get there.

But then we have to consider: if he continues to trend in the same direction, and theres every indication he will, then 1.3m a year is pretty decent value. Im talking from a player / cost perspective. Obviously the trade cost is another matter but I would trust Ameet to perform magic there and somehow keep a first round presence.

The closest comparison i can think of is Robbie Flower with his skill and balance. Now, I'm not saying he will end his career being spoken of alongside Tulip, but who's to say he can't? He is so far away better than anyone his age right now. (Edit- probably a bit of an over rating of the kid but **** it I'm on a roll here!) ;)

For me, I want want want him. Thankfully the club think with clearer heads than I, coz right now I would probably cough up 15m just to lock him in! :)

How about our 2017 and 2018 firsts plus hickey with a 2nd back? Like I say.... thank God I'm not in charge!

For Kelly...
Giants will want Hawthorns & Saints first round picks this year and then turn them into an even earlier pick like pick 1 or 2.
That's how they work i.e. pick 2 last year which got them Taranto. Not really interested in players or draft picks from different years.

And if someone is completely in charge of a negotiation and able to demand whatever they want, it never makes sense to buy from them unless totally desperate.

He's their problem alright. Big problem. Poor buggers.
What are u even on about? 70k and winning in spite of dusty so who cares? 70k richmond fans don't. Murdoch empires? I said as a football fan if you care what, say, a numpty like Hutchy or Barratt or whoever say instead of beating Collingwood you're off your rocker.
If u personally don't respect dusty, that's your decision, but worrying about journos? I don't know a thing what media wrote about our 66 players, don't care. They won so they're heroes. Journos from back then? Can't name one. Todays scum journos no different.

if it is capped at 100% that i would image mean we have been paid 100% in years we only used 95%, so in the end theyve given us the money to spend at some point, its just up to us how we spend it

if not they hold onto it but increase when we want to use the banking mechanism

AFL pays 100%, Whatever 100% is, they pay it,

Think of it more as head office paying storefront people instead of the store

Its already been discussed to death. Freo will match any offer regardless. Im happy the club wont pay 1.5. Its too much for 1 player.
Totally agree - it's massive coin for a player that is playing ordinary footy and is nowhere near an elite kick. Committing that amount of the SC for one blokes potential best is a major concern.

The Kelly situation is becoming ridiculous imo. Very good player & a very good chance to become the best in the competition. But paying $12M over 9 years is too much for any one player. It's not even the amount that is the main concern, it's the length of the contract. I'd have no issue paying on average $1.2M per year but over 5 or maximum 6 year term.

Rediculous money. Surely a sign that he's happy to stay at Freo

I wouldnt say fyfe putting a price on his head at 1.5mill to leave is ridiculous.

He's on circa a mill a year already at freo, their new offer is probably similar.

So 1.5mill is 50% more than his current rate.

Factor in around 20% inflation with the cap increase and 1.5mill is waving a ~30% pay bump carrot in front of him to move clubs.

I'm not suprised that's HIS asking price ballpark.
Star players don't do something as drastic as change clubs for chump change.

Nor am i suprised WE have thought a 30% carrot is too big, and aren't prepared to pay him any more than a 20% sized carrot to change clubs.

If you think on the positive side it actually could be a bargain if he reaches his peak when most players do and if it isn't licked to CBA rises its even more of a bargain. The length doesn't worry me because of his age.

Getting really boring to be honest, I'm sorry I can't keep track of what you are on about.

You do realise you have responded to more than one poster?.

My point is very simple I like Martin but not enough to choose him over other available talent taking all things into consideration, cost, age, club fit, membership and sponsorship impact etc.

Yes in my opinion the media even hutchy and Barrett matter, it doesn't matter if I rate them, they still matter. Would I base my recruiting around their opinions hell no.

Would i take into account a players overall potential impact on the club both on and off the field including good or bad press, yes I would.

Now if you imply I have said Richmond want to give away dusty or i said he will be cheap of course I'm going to refute that.

The proposed $12M deal works out to be $1.3M a year. He turns 23 before the start of next season. Paying a bloke into his 30s $1.3M a year is excessive even if the next CBA sees another 20% increase.

Dusty to St Kilda is a lock, fair dinkum throw away the key. Barracked for us as a kid, dreamed about pulling on the red white and black his entire life, slept with RWB socks everynight, we have ties to NZ - his Dad lives in NZ - therefore his Dad pretty much practically played for us. Wowee what a fairytale. No point even entertaining another club, Dustin is about to fulfil his destiny. Do not argue

Don't fall for that he can only get better routine, he doesn't need to improve mind you but it doesn't always work like that.

Brereton was always saying that about buddy after he had that great year in 2008, I think that was his best year.
