So after all this talk . we have lobbe, hartlett , broadbent and westhoff on our list taking up 4 spots and taking up nearly 2 million in cap space and we traded 2 top 10 picks in the best drafts in years which have a mid and a forward which could significantly help our 2 biggest defficencys in our list and we brought in no help/improvments to our list in a side that was embarrassingly bad half the year and all the picks we have are 14 ,17 and 30 , wow just wow , its all over . the dark days are back . no flag hope in at least 5 til 8 years if were lucky . cripps and davies go to hell

We've gone from having 1 pick in the top 48 at the start of the week, to 4 picks in the top 31. I'm ok with that.

We did NOT trade two top ten picks. We traded one top ten pick and a theoretical and conditional top ten pick.
Its more likely to be a top ten pick than not, even on law of averages.

Im so confused right now. Not sure wether to rage because we've just traded 1 top 10 and a possible future top 10. I dont know weather be happy that we are going to at least get a couple of good kids for the future or go into some kind of ragez

Have to say though this certainly fills like a mini-rebuild. Apart from when we entered thw AFL have we ever had 4 picks in the top 31?

Next year's top 10 pick that we now miss out on in the likely event that we miss finals.

The fact is that quality > quantity when it comes to draft choices. Travis Boak was pick 5, Chad Wingard was pick 6, Ollie Wines was pick 7. That's where the vast majority of the cream of the draft crop comes from - the top 10. And what did we just do? We traded ourselves out of the top 10 and into the 15-30 range which is practically a lucky dip. We have totally bottled this.

I think we will have more options to get back into the first round next year with player movements.

Exactly, for all we know we could finish top 6 next year and look back and think "so happy we did that"

For all we know pittard/Trengove/Ollie could be wanting to go back to Melbourne next year and will get us back into the draft in a major way next year anyway.

It's all hypothetical ATM, I get why people on here are doom and gloom but this isn't the end of the world.

Exactly

Player Managers and List Managers from all other clubs must be lining up to del with us. Here, have a contract with us that no other club would even think about doing, here have our two top ten picks for your average stuff. Come deal with us we are the good guys of the AFL.

The only people that could be happy with this are the crew who think every draft pick nets you a winner.

I am going top post this a hundred times until it sinks in

We swapped 9 for 14, so as to upgrade 19 to 17

When that finally sinks in, people will then recognise what a guaranteed top 10 pick next year- probably pick 7 (+/-2), was given away for

2012:
14 - Corr
17 - Josh Simpson
30 - Mason Shaw
31 - Kamden McIntosh

9* - Vlastuin
2013:
14 - McCarthy
17 - Apeness
30 - Dumont
31 - Karpany

9* - Salem
2014:
14 - Lever
17 - Kyle Langford
30 - Maynard
31 - Daniel Howe

9* - Darcy Moore
2015:
14 - Hipwood
17 - Doedee
30 - Mason Redman
31 - Ryan Clarke

9* - Sam Weideman

Does not fill me with any confidence at all that we are going to be rejuvenating our list with our picks. Some very very average players there, some I have never heard of. Great work Ports.

Is there anything to stop a club from trading it's first pick next year, into a current first rounder, every year?

I mean theoretically we could do that every year right?

And then at some stage someone may want to leave and we'd just fill in that year with a 1st pick from the loss of a player and return to normal.

So in a sense, even though we are taking a risk, maybe we've actually uncovered a loop hole that we are exploiting?

Think of it this way, we'll secure a bunch of talented kids who can force these names out of the side and potentially out of the club. We're certainly positioning ourselves for a big turnover next year in the case of another failure. If we trade out/lose to FA a Pittard we'll be back in the first round or very close too.

We can only move on players who agree to be moved on or who are out of contract. Nothing else we can do. We dug the hole re: long term contracts, but we are doing the right thing to dig out. Load up on talent and force them to move.

So essentially what your saying is davies and cripps should be sacked either way

Yes. Yes, thats right. I think I have just realised how ****ing dumb half of the people on this board really are. Like, really

Clockwork, its a love in for cognitive dissonance that this is now good "on reflection I can see what they have done, this is pretty good, we have 4 picks in the top 30, can't wait for draft night". 4 days ago this would be disastrous. Last night swapping pick 9 was an abomination

14 and 17 are NOT pick 9

Swapping 9 for 14 so as to upgrade 19 to 17 is madness. MADNESS. There are NO words for this. None.

We gave away TWO top 10 picks, and have rags.

I've just had a penny drop moment that half of you are TPFP aren't you

Tuesday's deal was a cluster**** of incompetence, of that there is no doubt.

But I think today's deal is actually ok given what we need on our list. A kid who is picked up in the first 2 rounds of the draft will come to the club expecting to have an impact and get game time in their first season, especially if they're a midfielder. This is what we need. A kid picked up in the third round is more likely to just be content at being on the list. We also know that KH is far more inclined to give games to big names or high draft picks.

So, while player #9 might end up being better than player #14, the impact of having four kids, instead of three, putting genuine pressure on our underperforming senior players will hopefully be of greater benefit overall. We are so far away from one player making a difference to our fortunes that I kinda think this is approach we have to take.

The question now is how the **** do we reverse Tuesday's cluster**** and get back into the 2017 draft!?!?!

Our biggest failure this trade period wasn't not getting players in or what we have done with our picks. It's not being able to trade away some of the dead wood.
Which club in their right mind would want players on their list who don't possess the skills, courage or mental strength to get the job done against piss weak opposition?

Just thought Finbarr was putting a big of spin on it saying "I like the final move of trading away pick 9 and getting 14 and 17".

Still, we move out of the top ten picks just to get a slight upgrade on 19 and 49 to 31. Time will tell whether it was a good move I guess.

You're right, it's a bit of a gamble, but I like it on face value. Let's load up as best we can and see what happens in 2017. At best we play well, play finals, and put some of this shit behind us. At worst we bottom out even further, realise the folly of investing so heavily in this group and trade our way back into next year's first round.
