Will Phillips is great!
These two are probably a toss-up for the last spot in the team for round 1. As we are overloaded for mids, and are playing a fast team at Docklands, Stephens is likely to be picked over Will. The melts on here are going to be spectacular.

Reckon Stephens had his best quarters last year at Docklands. I actually watched the last quarter of the Melbourne game back last night and he was ****ing everywhere. Some great decisions, too. It was probably the remaining three where he was found wanting, though he wouldn't have been alone in that respect

Nvm, he was sub. Not sure if that makes him look better or worse

WillPhil be like a new tattoo for Libba next week he will be wearing him that close. Perfect guy to tag and run with as he will lead him to the ball, but is not super quick. If we keep Libba somewhat quiet, then it sill go a long way towards a win.

He hasn't tagged since round 16 last year and we're going to wheel him out to tag a bloke that's probably never been tagged before? Will's closing in on 50 games and has tagged for three. It was an experiment/learning. I'd be hoping we back our young mids to smack them!

i reckon it was a learning experience for him to get a taste of how much gut running an elite mid can do.

Yeah Will should just go head to head with him - Libba is the type of player he has to match to make a career out of afl.
Similar height , not fast and contested ball is their one wood.

Lol what. I have a feeling that they’re both playing? But if one is pushed out surely it’s not the bloke who has been one of the best on the track over pre season?

I think they are probably player 22 and 23 at the moment and it's more likely to come down to structure and our game plan than anything else. Going by how fast the first two games have been, I would have thought we'd prioritise running power over playing an extra inside mid. Especially at Docklands and against the Dogs.

So who are our inside mids against the Doggies?

Stephens or RHJ for sub in round 1 imo.
Surely RHJ will be playing. I expect it will be the same 22 as the WC practice match except Simpkin and Parker to come in for Konstanty and Phillips and split their time between midfield and forward. If Will plays over Dyl we'll have too many inside mids players and not enough run. And we'd have to cut Tom, Luke and Harry's mid time to fit Will in.

Crazy to think in his draft year. Stephens was the higher rated prospect as opposed to Will Day.

Believe it or not they had near identical athletic traits, but Stephens had more exposed form as a genuine midfielder/winger, whereas Day played more as a half back. The criticism of both of them was the same though, both were considered softer outside types with not enough strength in and around the contest. Stephens failed to improve that side of his game as his body developed, while Day improved that side of his game considerably.

Stephens

2.97s 20m Sprint

Day
2.96 20m Sprint

Agility (didn't feature in top 10)
2km Time Trial (didn't feature in top 10)

Sydney had a shocker of a draft that year....................until they took Chad Warner with their 4th pick.

Hard to believe now that they took Stephens, Will Gould and Elijah Taylor before him.

A rising tide raises all boats

Stephens will be better in a better team
With FOS coming in
And McK hopefully George and once Duursma cracks it we start looking somewhat skilled at least on paper
Definitely a spot for him if the team can develop some smarts under pressure
