100%. And he is the most obvious example. But I feel like that’s permeated the team.

A nicely weighted long kick to the advantage of in form forwards isn’t the worst option. And it would certainly reduce scores against from turnover.

The other thing I noticed a few times is that the player with the ball often ignored to handball to the player 5 to 6 metres ahead of them at around 45 degrees which would have put them clear into space and probably make a kick over the defensive line for a forward to run on to a real option. Instead, they retained the ball, sometimes after feigning the handball and attempting the kick themselves resulting in a turnover. One from Stephens was smothered instead of ending up 20 metres out from our goal.

I remember Hugh Greenwood saying last pre season during the televised intra club that working out when to run it, when to handball, when to kick was still a work in progress.

Seems like it still is

That said, our hand balling hasn’t been great to start the year off imo. And not just hitting targets but also decisions. Plenty of forward handballs to flat footed team mates. Or even giving the hands to guys running past under pressure. Like powell demanding the handball off X when he not only had pressure behind but also infront.

Kicking long to a 1v1 situation is fine. Kicking long to a pack is where I draw the line though. Just need to hit targets on the lead more often.

Need to work our arses off to get separation. We used to have one of the most potent and dangerous forward lines in the comp under Brad. It hasn't been that level since.
W80, Dish and Ben Brown.

If we had W80, Larkey and Dish we'd have the same thing now. Even as it is its okay with Darling. We have the fourth highest points for right now, less than a goal behind the third highest (who are St Kilda believe it or not.) The two highest scoring teams are on top of the ladder.

We just need to stop leaking as many goals and we might be an outside chance at finals ... hard as that is to believe.

To stop leaking goals we need to turn it over less, especially in D50 and centre.

I feel the same but in the opposite way.

Sure, I get it’s AFL. I get that it’s a little more scientific than kicking long.

But I genuinely believe we make it harder for ourselves by too often not kicking long to a contest.

Caleb Daniel is a perfect example. He just refuses to kick to a 2 vs 2 long down the line. Instead he does 1 of 3 things:

1: try and make an aggressive kick and turn it over (approx 50%)
2: try and make an aggressive kick an make it (approx 25%)
3: hold onto it, invite pressure, try and kick long but under kick it (approx 25%)

Think back to our six goals in 6 minutes against the dees. How many were long kicks that created havoc?

1: curtis first
2: larkey second
3: larkey third
4: Zuhaar first from Curtis was a long kick to 1 vs 1 to forwards advantage
5: Zuhaar second
6: Curtis second the only one that was a spot up pass that doesn’t fit the mold

When i played footy a long kick to a 2 vs 2 was not something to be scared of.

Sure, don’t kick to a 3 vs 2.

But we make it so hard for ourselves by not kicking long and Quickly to our forwards when there are even numbers forward of the ball.

We could have cut 50% of our score from turnovers by kicking long and direct. We have darling now who is good at making a contest.
The problem, though, is that Clarko is trying to build a team that can hold onto the ball and execute. That’s going to be a work in progress for a while, I reckon. We need to practise it. Hence, turnovers sometimes until we can get it right.

I really just want to find room for Maley. Take the pressure off X and give us a genuine contested marking threat deep inside 50.

We aren’t going to lose much run if we drop Phillips for him.
He's not ready. Surely we at least wait until he's kicked a bag at VFL level and found some confidence in his kicking? He was invisible in the 2nd half on Sunday.

Perhaps one thing to consider is he might benefit from playing in a stronger side with more talent around him, plus he'll get improved conditions under the roof vs city oval on the weekend. He was pretty competitive against Sam Frost who would be playing in most AFL sides not named Hawthorn. I don't mind the idea of playing him for a half and if isn't working being more open minded to pulling the sub earlier than we have in the opening rounds.

Sydney aren't great or reliable in Melbourne. Don't think it's a massive call to say that.

We're also paying $2.41 so according to the bookmakers it's not far off an even money proposition.
They could get 5 players back this week they are saying

Their tall forwards outside Amartey aren’t firing a shot. We have a distinct advantage there is we can get Comben intercepting. If we can lockdown on Hayward and Papley along with their midfield I can see them struggling to score.

Our forward line also has a distinct advantage with the way it’s been functioning too. Their backline is unsettled and has a number of players that aren’t particularly good at one on one defending. Particularly Bice, Wicks and Florent. If we can get the likes of Curtis, Zurhaar and even Sheezel enough clean opportunities, then that will go a long way to us beating them.

Team Tips: Fresh off their Round 3 bye, the Swans will be praying they can avoid succumbing to a Kangaroos upset that would see them slip to 1-3 for the first time this decade. Thankfully, a truckload of players could be made available this week — with Logan McDonald the most likely of five players to be deemed fit for the trip to Melbourne. All of Taylor Adams, Harry Cunningham, Lewis Melican and captain Callum Mills are an outside chance to play, with their fitness to be determined later this week. 2024 mid-season draftee Tom Hanily was quiet against the Dockers in Perth back in Round 2, and may be squeezed out alongside sub Angus Sheldrick if multiple players are ticked off to play North Melbourne. A watch on Sam Wicks’ new role on defence will be intriguing also, given the number of defenders set to come back in the next week or two.

Team Tips: Former Docker Griffin Logue is the one name that could return from injury for the Kangaroos this Saturday night under the roof, after the club opted not to play him against the Crows last week. Should he play, it may squeeze Toby Pink out of the 23 after a rough afternoon in Adelaide playing on Taylor Walker. Tristan Xerri started real sore in the six-goal loss, but looked to shrug off any real concerns over his fitness as the match went on. Small forward Robert Hansen Jr was quiet before being subbed out, but has looked solid in his previous two outings this season. In the reserves, first-year draftee Matt Whitlock (27 disposals, nine intercept possessions, seven marks) got off to a red-hot start in impressive signs, while both Wil and Kallan Dawson were strong down back in support.

Our players need to master the art of drawing free kicks. Every other cheating mongrel club does it, why should we act different?
I'd prefer not to see it as it's an absolute abomination to see ducking, arm lifting and straight-up diving for frees like some of the Adelaide players performed on Sunday. I've no idea why they need to do it though as they're good enough to not have to cheat.

This game has less to do with the odds and more to do with the gods.

Last years BS call on interchange infringement; the 19th man saga; the deliberate runner interference episode; tackling below the knee rule etc etc

We owe the swans big time and this game is the start of our redemption against them. We need to smash these campaigners!!!!!
