Brisbane Lions defender Zac Bailey is expected to miss the next four to six weeks of the season due to a hamstring injury suffered in Saturday night’s win against Port Adelaide. The 19-year-old came off in the fourth quarter and did not return for the remainder of the match.

General Manager of Football said tests yesterday revealed the injury was worse than first anticipated. “It’s disappointing that Zac has had a little hiccup with this hamstring injury as he had looked quite settled in the backline,” Noble said. “He will work hard in his rehab to get back playing as soon as he can.”

Science and luck: How the Lions' list has come together (Callum Twomey)
Brisbane's rise up the ladder has been borne from a mix of factors: a coach and football manager setting the plan and driving it; a development program that is well resourced and run; a productive Academy; a playing group that is young, close and committed and a recruiting team that has followed a clear strategy.

Of the Lions line-up that comprehensively beat Port Adelaide on the weekend, 10 of the players were drafted by recruiting manager Stephen Conole, who has steered the club's recruiting division since 2012. Hugh McCluggage and Eric Hipwood would have boosted that number to 12 if not for injuries.

There has been some decisive recruiting calls that have shaped Brisbane's rise into third place.

In 2017, the Lions traded picks 20 and 25 to Richmond to move up five spots to No.15 to ensure they could get Zac Bailey at that spot. Several clubs were interested in the pick, and had Essendon kept their No.11 selection that season they would likely have taken Bailey.

But the Lions jumped up and wanted Bailey's speed, agility and upside.

UNSUNG HEROES - ROUND 7
Brisbane: Zac Bailey

Saturday’s clash with the Giants was arguably one of the best and most influential games of Zac Bailey’s short career. Supported by a star-studded line-up, the Lions and Bailey returned to their match-winning best against the Giants. Bailey collected 18 disposals, a game-high 10 marks, three inside 50s, laid three tackles and kicked two goals – equaling his career-best haul.

The Brisbane Lions are excited to announce emerging stars Brandon Starcevich and Zac Bailey have agreed to new deals with the Club.

The pair arrived in Brisbane via the 2017 NAB AFL draft and will continue to play alongside each other until at least the end of 2024 having both signed three-year contract extensions. The 21-year-olds are both low key personalities off the field and excitement machines on it.

Bailey, who broke through for his first top ten finish in the Club Championship in 2020 with a 9th placing in the Merrett-Murray medal voting, said he was thrilled to have committed his future to the Club. “I love playing here, I’ve built strong relationships with all the boys and our coaches and I’m excited by the future with the Lions,’’ he said. “There’s a group of us who are coming through together and I’m really happy to have this deal locked away so we can get stuck into the season.’’

Lions GM of Football Danny Daly said Starcevich and Bailey had key roles to play in the Club’s future. "This is great news for our footy club,’’ he said. “They are both pretty quiet guys, but they are certainly making their presence felt out on the footy field. “Their determination to constantly improve through hard work is very impressive.

“It is exciting when young players start to generate the belief that they can help propel the team forward and begin to not only feel comfortable in the big moments in games but relish them and that’s what we are seeing with both Zac and Brandon.’’

Bailey The Hero In After-The-Siren Thriller

ZAC Bailey has lived every young footballer's dream, kicking a goal after the siren to defeat Collingwood at Marvel Stadium by one point and revive Brisbane's flagging season.

With his team trailing by five points and the clock winding down, Bailey marked a deftly weighted Daniel Rich kick 50m from goal.

The young midfielder moved in as the siren sounded and flushed the kick straight between the posts to lift the Lions to a 11.7 (73) to 11.6 (72) victory.

It's an amazing feeling," Bailey told Fox Footy after the match.

"It (the kick) felt really good. There was a lot of pressure obviously and I was just glad I was able to put it through."

Bailey was the man at the centre of the Mark Blicavs non-decision last Friday night when Brisbane lost a heartbreaker to Geelong by one point.

His kick finished a turbulent week for the Lions that saw them remain in Melbourne after a COVID-19 lockdown in Brisbane.

Bailey's A Star In The Making

Brisbane is making another serious charge towards the premiership this season and Zac Bailey is becoming a key cog in the Lions' flag assault.

The youngster has had a great season so far and underlined just how special a talent he is against the Crows on Saturday.

Bailey starred with 26 touches, nine clearances and three goals – including a mesmerising effort in the third term when he took the ball from a stoppage, danced around a Crows opponent, glided inside 50 and coolly slotted it.

Saturday's effort was the fourth time Bailey has kicked 3 goals or more in a game. He kicked 3 goals against Sydney in Round 1 and has kicked 4 goals against both Richmond and Melbourne.

The powerful speedsters ability to damage the scoreboard is becoming critical to the Lions

Coach Chris Fagan said post-game that Bailey had the potential to become one of the best midfielders of the competition, and given his electric speed and goalkicking prowess, it seems the young gun has a bright future ahead of him.

"Zac's speed and agility is outstanding and he's starting to win more of the footy," Fagan said.

"He can become a really good player and he'll continue to learn from our senior guys like Lachie Neale, Jarryd Lyons and Dayne Zorko.

"He's still very young so he's still got a long way to go, but it's exciting to see the way he's developing."
