2021 WRFL SEASON DETERMINATIONS

The WRFL Board met this week and made a number of key determinations following the cancellation of the 2021 season.

These determinations are as follows:

Promotion and relegation (relevant to senior men’s football competitions only)

The WRFL Board determined that promotion and relegation will not be applied ahead of the 2022 season.

In making this determination, the Board identified that fundamental to the promotion/relegation process was the completion of a finals series. As desperately as the entire WRFL community wanted to complete a finals series this season, the Board acknowledged the reality that this had not been able to occur.

In reaching its decision, the WRFL Board also took into consideration the minimal number of senior matches completed over the past two seasons (2020-21), recognising the significantly reduced sample size of completed matches to adequately inform any promotion/relegation process. The Board also recognised the inequities between different club fixtures as a result of intermittent lockdowns throughout the season, acknowledging the varied implications these lockdowns had on respective club fixtures and in turn the make-up of competition ladders at the time the season came to an abrupt end in early August.

All clubs were recently surveyed for their views on promotion/relegation, with responses showing that the decision not to apply promotion/relegation at this time aligned with the majority view of WRFL clubs.

Minor Premierships

The WRFL Board determined to acknowledge and recognise the team on top of the ladder when the season was cancelled with a Minor Premiership (all competitions).

While consideration was given to the awarding of Premierships as opposed to Minor Premierships, the decision to award Minor Premierships only again acknowledged the reality that despite its best efforts, the League was unable to play a finals series across any one competition, with the completion of a finals series again considered critical in order to recognise and award fully fledged Premierships.

Junior Minor Premiers will be presented with Minor Premier medallions.

The decision to award Minor Premierships for the teams on top of the ladder when the season was cancelled again aligned with the majority view of WRFL clubs.

League Best & Fairest and associated awards

The WRFL will present individual awards (Best & Fairest, leading goal kickers, Coaches MVP etc), with the award ceremonies to be presented online over the coming weeks. Further details to follow.

Aspects relating to senior Team Points and ‘salary caps’ will be finalised over the coming week.

The WRFL Board wishes to again take this opportunity to thank all clubs, players, parents, volunteers, officials, umpires and commercial partners for their support and understanding throughout a challenging 2021 season.

I see Point Cook Centrals have raided HCFC, Nathan Williams, Mitch Palmer, Danny Strnak and Aaron Williams, 3 of the 4 were regular senior players. I dont know why these guys would go and play a lower standard at their age. Hopefully they come to their sense's in a year or two and make their way back.

Apparently they can find the Forsyth Rd exit on the freeway which makes them 1-pointers. :thumbsu:

HaHa nice, good luck to them but very depressing once they realise that its really rubbish footy.

I spoke to a couple of guys that played in hoppers u18 flag a couple of years ago that went to newport and they said they are so disappointed with the level of footy that from what I understand are coming back to play DIV 1.

I guess when you come straight out of u18 footy its not a bad idea to go and try your luck at a Div 2 or 3 club and build some body weight to then come back and have a good go at Div 1.

Williams old man senior assistant coach is the link. Should be good comp div 2 next season especially for that 4th spot few sides have recruited well so far

Agree, but these 4 should run a muck in div 2 as will Josh Mcdonald at Glenorden.

good to be back, i know ive been missed. Having a look at the season ahead just wanted to get others thoughts on how much space will be between Point cook and the next best.

literally can't believe how many sluts you signed from div 1.
Other div 2 sides literally in tears.
wade skipper UP NEXT!?

Going to be a very competitive Division 2 season next year…. Lots of highly skilled players from division 1 to division 2… have also realised Newport have signed 2 big players that have both played at VFL level.

Newport
Glenorden

Any scores from PCC v Spotty game last night
I was there until just before
3/4 time. Spotty we’re kicking with the wind first and third. No scoreboard, but I think Pcc would have been in front when I left Pcc looked pretty sharp for second div. Spotty have a bit to work on.

All the talk is Parkside has recruited well, any truth to this? They must be the flag favorite in 2022.. whats the go with Point cook i was told they recruited lots of div 1 reserves players.
