A two-week opening round

WIMMERA-MALLEE Cricket Association begins its season tomorrow with an opening round stretched across this weekend and October 18 and 19.

The season has started well for the association with the Wilken Group signing on as naming rights sponsor.

Association president Lindsay Patullo said this season could be the best one yet.

"I think it will be a very close race this season," Patullo said. "I think it will be a ripper of a season."

A combination of show days, football trips and farming commitments has left the association with little option but to give its clubs flexibility with opening matches.

This means there might only be one match in the A Grade competition this weekend with Wycheproof-Narraport playing Jeffcott at Donald on Sunday, leaving the rest of the association to start its season next weekend.

Rich Avon-Services will be attempting to win back-to-back A Grade premierships but plenty of other sides are shaping up as potential premiers.

Wycheproof-Narraport have retained their side from last season and have also secured top-order batsman Ricky Allan who can also keep wickets and bowl leg-spin.

President John Durie said the club aimed to play in the grand final.

"We have players who have the ability to play with the top sides," Durie said. "Now we just need our players to commit to the game more than they have."

ANA-Boolite have been buoyed by new recruit Dylan Ruurds who played in Melbourne last season.

Club secretary Mark Connell said Ruurds could surprise some teams. "He is an ex-South African and has looked pretty good so far," Connell said. "Last year we were not that far off the other sides. We are just going to give it a go."

Brim-Kellalac-Sheep Hills secretary Graeme Holland said the return of Dale Stephan from Mildura would boost his club.

"Dale is a right-arm fast bowler who is pretty good," Holland said. "This year we want to go a step further and get into the grand final."

St Mary's are hoping to secure opening bowler Adam Schulz from Charlton after losing a couple of players during the off-season.

Club secretary Allan McKenzie said the club would place its faith in juniors this season.

"We got pipped in the finals last season and want to make it into the grand final this season," he said.

Beulah is unsure how it will go this season and club secretary Jason Allan believes the side won't show its true colours until the season is underway.

"We won't know much until we get to the first match," Allan said. "We have a few blokes in high school who have exams so we don't know if they will play."

Hopetoun has lost a few players including all-rounder Cohan Poulton and club president Alistair Monk wants his club to focus on the future.

"It is probably a rebuilding year for us," Monk said. "We have some improving young players who can hopefully get even better this season."

Jeffcott has suffered a big loss after opening batsman and seam bowler Josh Hollis moved to Townsville during the off-season.

Club president Brad Burke said the club still hoped to improve this season.

"Hollis will be a major loss," Burke said. "We just want to be more competitive and get a few more wins."

Charlton will be playing young all- rounder Angus McKenzie more this season and president Brendan Gretgrix will be waiting for the first few rounds before predicting how his club will go.

"You always expect to make finals but you don't know how things will turn out with other sides, " he said.

Rich Avon-Services expect to be without the service of wicketkeeper- batsman Brian Beckham who now works in Ballarat, but are close to securing the services of spinner Josh Murphy from Rupanyup-Minyip.

Club secretary Colin Gilmour expects his side to be strong once again.

"We have some good young kids and we are going to try to promote them more this season," he said.

Marnoo and Birchip will both be hoping to show some more improvement this season after missing out on the finals last season.

With the season almost upon us, it will be interesting to see if St.Mary's begin to talk themselves up again this year.

A few of them would still be having nightmares about that terrible effort of 21 in last years semi-final.

Charlton and Rich Avon could be the teams to beat this year.
