Marty McFly has done himself a mischief and has altered the course of Aussie footy in ways you can't imagine!
Get ready to dive into alternate futures!

What is “What If” Wednesdays?
"What if" Wednesdays was a competition comprised of real-life football team proposals, merger propositions, former teams and a few hypotheticals brought to life by the FJGD community (eg. If the Melbourne-Hawthorn merger went ahead, if University/Fitzroy/Bris Bears stuck around, if Gold Coasts nickname were the Lifesavers etc.) it became this boards longest running competition (8/9/14 – 29/5/19). It has been revived under a meme cultured spin-off! Time traveller sneezes memes are all about butterfly effects on various things caused by a time traveller altering the past by means of a simple sneeze.

What’s new this time around?
This time or these times around, we will be flung into various timelines where our universes former teams, mergers, relocation proposals never existed or had its outcome altered slightly or severely! The list below is comprised of alternate timelines and the butterfly effect caused by our cheeky time traveller. Your job is to envision this outcome! Each comp will run for 1 week and the poll will run for 3 days. The winner picks the next team from the list below or can use their one-time self-imposed idea where they put forward an idea not listed below.

There are some routes you can go by if you're stuck:
  • The chosen team has entered their designated competition in the current year (unless specified) along with the current teams OR
  • You may design kits at any point in time unless strictly specified OR
  • Accompany your kits with a backstory on how the team came to be to help better envision the outcome
  • Use Google to search the history and stories behind what is being altered
Bare minimum for an entry is:
  • A home kit with the front of the jumper showing
    (Back, shorts, socks are optional)
  • OPTIONAL Away kit (Home with white shorts is acceptable)
  • OPTIONAL 3rd kit
    • Clash kit
    • Heritage kit
    • Other kit
  • OPTIONAL Club Logo (Highly Encouraged!)

Let’s see what has happened this time

Norwood had history and success on its CV to say it was the superior choice for Team20. Evoking Norwood’s original guernsey of 1878, the Redlegs made a slight change to a Tripanel jumper with their monogram in Old Gold in a subtle nod to the state colours of SA. Changes to their uniform set meant Norwood were able to circumvent other clubs challenges to historic elements held dear to their club.

After 2024 Gather Round, talks of Norwood being the 20th AFL team alongside Tasmania started up again and gained rapid traction. Positives included big South Australian support, partnerships with major local brands, high game attendances and experience hosting AFL games at Norwood Oval. The dream came to fruition as Norwood was announced as the 20th team alongside Tasmania to compete in the 2028 AFL season. Melbourne Demons raised the issue of brand recognition as Norwood's kits and colour scheme closely resembled their own. Norwood agreed to alter their kits heading into the AFL by reverting to their first ever guernsey with the red panel running down the middle (which coincidentally resembles the Demons first ever guernsey) with the addition of a gold stroke and the clubs monogram becoming the centrepiece to help differentiate between the two. The away/clash kit would retain their red base but swapping the half/half midway colour inversion for a more classic double yoke with the standard navy and new gold. Gold was chosen over yellow to not replicate the Adelaide Crows colour scheme and to honour their golden history made in the SANFL

Im back!

with team 19 tassie joining the AFL 2028 talks about a team 20 started to happen with most club higher-ups and league officials not wanting 19 team comp, ideas were pushed to fold or merge a victorian club, no one wanted this so they looked at trying to bring in a 20th team at the same time Canberra was the best option but the deal with the giants won't end until 2032 and manuka needing major upgrades this was pushed aside for a later time, wa3 was considered but was scarped due to both teams struggling, this left Norwood was keen, the AFL went with this idea, with them making their home kit red as a deal with the demons and adding a stripe and white accents not changing the team completely but giving them a more identifiable design than a plain kit and to keep them different from the demons

This one is actually the work of a genius.

I’d been playing with the Norwood AFL idea for several weeks and experimented with several ideas. I decided not to go red and blue because I felt: 1. It was too easy and 2. If it happens, and there’s a small possibility it could, a third colour will have to happen.

I played with royal blue and red. The thought process being that Geelong and North can share blue and white so why can’t Norwood and Melbourne. Didn’t love it.

I tried Navy, white and red in the style of a Sydney Roosters guernsey. Didn’t love it.

I tried a Melbourne Victory style blue and white. Norwood has a huge Italian following and I was trying something to represent that with some red highlights. I really loved that but it was impractical.

I tried red, blue and black. I couldn’t find a single sporting team in the world that uses those three colours and therefore found zero inspiration to make the idea work.

Not once did I think to myself I’ll try gold. This guernsey is f**king awesome! As a Norwood fan and someone who really hopes we can miraculously obtain the 20th licence I would be absolutely stoked if we could rock this at the AFL level. Love it!

A third colour to satisfy Melbourne
