"It's 1996 and with years upon years of talks about possible mergers amongst various AFL clubs, the struggling Brisbane Bears seek a lifeline in the Fitzroy Lions whose team had an incredible resurgence, claiming the reserves premiership in recent years but dwindling crowds and crippling debt put their name amongst the clubs in need of some support. The Bears and Lions board got together and after some months of deliberation and considerations of all options, the two parties agreed to merge and have the Bears name move south into Victoria to become the Fitzroy Bears. This would unfortunately leave Queensland without a footy team, but years later, they would finally get another under a different name. Their inaugural jumper comprised of a mix between the Bears recent Vee and the first Fitzroy jumper with old chamois reinforcing with the red changing to the old maroon, as well as the standard blue yoke that sits on top. The bear head was an unused Brisbane Bears logo which finally saw some purpose as the centrepiece"

"Found this in the cupboard - pretty sure it's an old Fitzroy-Brisbane Bears Football Club one from the 90s"

Fitzroy Bears 1997.png

"Its 1990 and and the Bears make a bid to take over the struggling Fitzroy at the request of the AFL. The AFL offer the Bears 6 million in cash to take over the struggling Lions and another 6 million to Fitzroy which will pay off their debts and remove them from administration. The Fitzroy board accept but due to being stuck on the Gold Coast and unable to build a successful fanbase in Brisbane the AFL decide to pull out of south-east Queensland and move the Bears to Victoria. The Bears would play their first season based in Melbourne in 1991 and this would allow Fremantle and Port Adelaide to join the AFL together in 1995. The Bears would go on to win three premierships in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Co-Captain and 2003 Brownlow Medalist Nathan Buckley won his second Norm Smith Medal after the 2003 Grand Final where the Bears beat Collingwood by 50 points. The Bears were unable to win a 4th Grand Final in a row as they would lose the 2004 Grand Final to St Kilda, who had beaten Port Adelaide the week earlier. St Kilda would end a 38 year drought."
